Police, FBI search for Medford boy, 2, missing after parents found dead in suspected murder-suicide

Medford police are asking for the public’s help to find Aiden Salcido, the 2-year-old son of a couple found dead Wednesday in an apparent murder-suicide in Montana.

The driver of a sport utility vehicle with Oregon plates Wednesday fled from police in Kalispell, Montana, on Wednesday night. Police eventually spiked the vehicle’s tires, bringing it to a stop. When they approached it, they found two people dead inside: Daniel Salcido and Hannah Janiak.

Medford police say they believe Janiak had been shot in the head and Salcido died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Their son, Aiden, was not in the vehicle. Police said there was no evidence he had been.

The green 1996 GMC Jimmy had been purchased in late June or early July in Central Point, Oregon, police said.

The unmarried couple was reported missing July 11 after Janiak failed to appear to begin serving a jail sentence for a burglary conviction in Jackson County, authorities said. Felony warrants for Salcido had been issued July 15 stemming from the same burglary, police said.

Janiak’s last financial activity happened June 3 and 4 when two purchases, including camping equipment, were made at a Medford Walmart, police said. Investigators reviewed surveillance video that showed the couple together with Aiden.

Medford police say family told them the three were homeless and camped in Medford.

Medford police said in a news release that they are “greatly concerned for Aiden’s welfare” and are searching for him with the help of the FBI. Detectives are looking for any information on his family’s whereabouts since they were reported missing July 11.

    Medford police seek missing child

Local police are asking for help finding a missing child with connections to Medford.

Police said in 2018, Daniel Salcido and Hannah Janiak were involved in a burglary in Jackson County. However, the pair fled before starting their jail sentences.

As investigators began digging through Hannah’s financial records in an attempt to track her down, they came across two purchases from the south Medford Walmart for camping equipment and other items. The transactions were dated June 3 and June 4. They were the last bit of financial evidence police could find.

Officers looked through the store’s surveillance footage and found video of Hannah and Daniel with their son, Aiden Castiel Salcido. Even with this new evidence, officers could not locate the trio.

The family was reportedly homeless and would often camp along the Bear Creek Greenway.

On July 25, Medford police were contacted by the Kalispell Police Department in Montana. They said they pulled over a 1996 GMC Jimmy with Oregon license plates. During the traffic stop, the man and woman inside the vehicle gave what was believed to be false information about their identities.

Kalispell police said in the middle of the traffic stop, the vehicle fled. The pursuit ended when the vehicle’s tires were punctured by a spike strip. Inside, officers found the man and woman dead. The woman was shot in the head and the man had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. They were the only two people in the vehicle.

The pair was eventually identified as Daniel and Hannah. Their son Aiden was nowhere to be found and there was no sign a child was ever in the GMC Jimmy.

“Investigators are greatly concerned for Aiden’s welfare and are asking for the public’s help in locating him safely and expeditiously,” MPD said.

FBI called in to investigate Kalispell murder-suicide

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is joining the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office in investigating a July 24 murder-suicide in Kalispell.

We told you earlier this week how a chase ended when officers put out stop sticks. But detectives say a man and woman found inside the vehicle were dead. They were later identified as Daniel Salcido and Hannah Janiak.

Now we’re told the couple’s three-year-old child is missing.

Police in southern Ore. searching for young boy after suspected murder/suicide in Montana

Detectives are asking for help finding a two-year-old boy after they say his parents were involved in an apparent murder/suicide in Montana.

Investigators are greatly concerned for Aiden Salcido’s welfare after they say law enforcement in Montana found his parents dead inside a 1996 GMC Jimmy Thursday after leading a pursuit that ended when the pair ran over a spike strip, according to police. Investigators say the pair died from apparent gunshot wounds.

Daniel Salcido and Hannah Janiak, who were not married, were reported missing to the Medford Police Department June 11 and were involved in a burglary in Jackson County in 2018, according to investigators.

Family members told law enforcement they hadn’t had contact with Daniel, Hannah and Aiden and were concerned for their welfare. Family also said the trio were homeless and that Hannah was living with mental health issues. They said the mom, dad and son would often camp along the greenway in Medford.

Investigators says Hannah’s last reported transaction was at the Walmart on Center Drive in Medford June 3 and 4, when surveillance video shows the trio purchasing camping equipment, among other items.

Is it me or does it seem like there's quite a bit of detail being left out of MSM?

June 3rd & 4th WalMart sighting in Medford, OR
June/July (approx) SUV purchased in Central Point, OR
July 25th murder-suicide in Kalispell City, MT

For a couple that were homeless how did they manage to travel over 800 miles without assistance?

I hope they didnt leave the little guy at wherever they might have been camping at.

My biggest hope is that they gave him to someone else. Whether to "watch him for a bit" or sold him.
And maybe that person doesn't realize who he is or hasn't made the connection yet.

No transactions for nearly 2 months as well. Being homeless and without jobs, they likely operated mostly on cash. So that's probably why there isn't a lot of detail.
But to get from Medford to Kalispell they're gonna need 2-3 tanks of gas. It's nearly 800 miles. How did they get that money? Standing on a corner or begging at a gas station? Maybe.

Hannah Janiak & Daniel Salcido: 5 Fast Facts

The last confirmed sighting of Aiden was on June 4 with parents Hannah Rachel Janiak, 24, and Daniel Amadeo Salcido, 22. Authorities believe the boy may be anywhere between Oregon and Montana. Anyone with information about Aiden’s whereabouts is asked to call 541-774-2258 and reference case 19-10842.

    1. Janiak and Salcido Were Convicted of Burglary

Janiak and Salcido were described by authorities as an unmarried couple living in Medford, Oregon. The couple was homeless and would often camp along the Bear Creek Greenway, a nearly 20-mile hiking and biking trail that connects the cities of Ashland, Talent, Phoenix, Medford and Central Point.

Janiak was arrested on April 11 in Jackson County, Oregon and charged with felony first-degree burglary, aggravated first-degree theft, first-degree theft, mail theft and a misdemeanor count of unlawfully possessing a concealed firearm. She was released on her own recognizance. No information about her bail was available.

Salcido was arrested the following day and charged with the same crimes.

    2. The Last Confirmed Spotting of the Family was on June 4

Police began a search for Janiak when she failed to show up for her June 11 sentencing hearing. Investigators checking financial records discovered the couple’s last known bank card purchases were on June 3-4 at a Medford Walmart.

Janiak and Salcido were spotted on the store’s surveillance video purchasing camping equipment and other supplies. The footage showed Aiden was in tow.

    3. Warrants Were Issued for Janiak and Salcido’s Arrest

On June 24, a felony warrant was issued for Janiak’s arrest, followed by a July 15 felony warrant issued for Salcido, also stemming from the burglary.

On July 25, Kalispell, Montana police pulled over Salcido and Janiak’s 1996 Green GMC Jimmy after witnessing a traffic violation. The vehicle had been sold to the couple in either late June or early July in Central Point, Oregon.

The couple fled in the SUV after the officer suspected the two had given false information about their identity and called for backup.

    4. The Murder-Suicide Occurred As Police Apprehended the Couple

Officers from the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office assisted in pursuing Janiak and Salcido. During the chase, they put spike strips on the road which flattened the GMC’s two front tires. Janiak and Salcido were eventually forced to pulled over at U.S. 93 near Bowdish Road.

When officers called out to the couple and received no response, they found Salcido and Janiak dead inside the vehicle. Janiak had been shot in the head and Salcido had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. There was no trace of Aiden in the car.

    5. The Couple Both had Aliases & Janiak Advertised Surrogacy Services on Facebook

The couple had separate Facebook accounts using the names “Ashley Hood” and “Lester Hood.” One of “Ashley Hood’s” posts begins with the greeting, “Hi my name is Hannah,” and advertised her interest in providing surrogacy services.

On April 30, 2018, Janiak also posted a similar ad on ClassifiedAds.com offering her services as a surrogate mother for a $100,000 fee. The ad was posted for the Las Vegas area and was viewed 179 times.

Janiak said in the post, “It’s been a dream of mine to be a surrogate for those who can’t bear children of their own,” and that “being in a financial rut helped me with the courage I need to follow my dream…”

In May, Janiak wrote on Facebook, “I am a surrogate that wants to touch people with a miracle of life please contact me if I can help you.”

“Ashley Hood’s” Facebook page also has several posts about suicide prevention, photos of Aiden, various items for sale, and work from home opportunities.

I'm afraid something happened to him while in their care and that's why they did the murder suicide. I didn't want it even go there at first, but after all this time and knowing how long it's been since he was seen...

Police: Body of 2-year-old found in Montana believed to be missing southern Oregon boy

Medford police on Sunday say the body of a 2-year-old that was found in Montana is believed to be a missing boy from southern Oregon.

On Sunday, the Medford Police Department said they learned from Montana authorities that a deceased 2-year-old, believed to be Aiden, was found in a remote area of Montana.

Positive identification has not been made, but the child’s body was found in the same area where Janiak and Salcido were seen by several witnesses days earlier, according to police.

Police say witnesses called in tips after seeing the story on the news and were instrumental in helping locate a remote camp that was believed to be occupied by Janiak and Salcido.

The cause and manner of death will not be released until an autopsy can be conducted next week in Montana.

Probe into death of 2-year-old in northwest MT continues

Law enforcement continues to investigate the death of a toddler and his parents after a routine traffic stop turned deadly.

Lincoln County Sheriff Darren Short says earlier that week a witness saw Janiak and Salcido near West Fisher Creek.

David Thompson Search and Rescue dogs were brought in to search the campsite and shortly after, rescue teams found the body of that is believed to be that of Aiden Salcido.

Sheriff Short told MTN News that while the identification hasn’t been confirmed, the autopsy was performed Monday in Missoula and he’s sure the body is Salcido’s.

“Once we get the cause and manner of death and all of the reports are completed. My detective is working on his reports right now, putting together all the photographs and the crime scene documentation that was from all the agencies involved,” Sheriff Short said.

Once that’s done then we’ll probably meet with the county attorney and then make sure our investigation is complete,” he continued.

Autopsy may answer questions about missing 2 year old’s death

An autopsy may help law enforcement understand how a 2-year old toddler died before his parents took their own lives following a police pursuit in the Flathead.

It’s believed the body discovered near Fisher River east of Libby is that of Aiden Salcido, who was reported missing Friday, a couple of days after his parents died in a murder-suicide outside Kalispell.

Autopsies are also being done for Salcido and Janiak. All of the bodies have been taken to the Montana State Crime Lab in Missoula.
