Andreen McDonald's husband asks for reduction of $2M bail

The husband of Andreen McDonald is hoping to have his bail lowered from $2 million.

A date for the hearing has not been set.

In the meantime, the search for Andreen continues -- officially and otherwise.

Salazar said detectives are working "literally still around the clock on this case."

"We're still going through technology, and we are still trying to gather intelligence," he said.

While the Bexar County Sheriff's Office asked for the public's help in its searches early on, that has since changed.

"Now, because we don't have specific intelligence leading us to a certain spot that's conducive to searching with volunteers, we're handling much of those land searches on our own," Salazar said.

However, people have still felt compelled to continue searching on their own.

A judge has lowered the bail for the Air Force Reserve major who is accused of tampering with evidence in the disappearance of his wife.

State District Judge Frank Castro reduced the bail of Andre Sean McDonald from $2 million on the single charge to $300,000. He also ordered McDonald to wear an electronic monitoring device and put him under full house arrest.

    This begs the question: WHY?

Unfortunately they haven't tacked on the murder charge yet. His only charge is evidence tampering. $2 million is really high, even more so for a single evidence tampering charge. It would seem they have plenty of evidence for the murder charge, even without her body, but apparently not. :(

Husband of missing mother Andreen McDonald released from jail on bond

A man believed to have played a role in the disappearance of his wife was released from the Bexar County Jail on Tuesday afternoon. But Andre McDonald will not be free; he will placed into military custody.

Andre McDonald speaks with KENS 5 while under house arrest

Just hours after he walked of jail, KENS 5 tracked down Andre McDonald. The Air Force Major is suspected in his wife's disappearance. He is now on house arrest.

Andre told KENS 5 Tuesday afternoon he had no comment and was just relaxing. He is on house arrest wearing a GPS monitor and is only allowed to and from work.

Tuesday also happened to be his daughter's 7th birthday. When asked if he would like to say anything to his daughter, Andre said he didn't have anything else to say.

KENS 5 also spoke to Cheryl Spencer, who is Andreen's cousin. She lives out of state.

"My thoughts seeing him, I wish I could have seen Andreen walk," she said. "Seeing him walking free in the streets of San Antonio, getting into that car, it was really difficult," Spencer said.

Spencer said, recently, the couple's daughter has been asking where Andreen is, which is making it difficult for the family.

"The past month of not knowing Andreen's whereabouts has just been emotionally exhausting for our family," she said.

She is hopeful there is new evidence in the case, and that Andre starts talking soon. "This little girl hasn't seen either parent in 30 days, and he hasn't said anything," she said.

McDonald's attorney asked the judge to order supervised visits with the couple's young daughter, but the judge ordered McDonald to have no contact with the girl.

McDonald is due back in court next month.

Crime Stoppers of San Antonio could pay up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of anyone responsible for any crimes against Andreen McDonald.

Burned human remains found on side of highway

Bexar County Sheriff Office officials have confirmed they are investigating a scene with burned human remains.

We're told they were called out to the scene on Highway 211 between Culebra and Bandera around 3 p.m., for a call of a burned body.

The remains were found about 75-100 yards off the road, according to officials.

BCSO, First Responders and the Bexar County Fire Marshal are all on scene.

Officials can not confirm whether or not the body may be missing mother Andreen McDonald.

"It's too early to tell, Deputy Johnny Garcia said. "However, we aren't ruling anything out."

They are asking for any tips from the community, if you may have seen something suspicious in the area you're asked to call the BCSO.

We're told it appears the body was burned on site and it could have been there for as long as a month or as little as a week.

Sheriff Salazar: Medical examiner 'pretty definite' charred remains not those of Andreen McDonald

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said he was notified by the medical examiner's office that it is "pretty definite" that the charred skeletal remains found in the far west area of the county are not those of Andreen McDonald, who is still missing.

Salazar said the Homicide Unit notified McDonald’s family about what the medical examiner’s office determined.

“The search continues for Andreen. (The homicide unit) hasn’t slowed down one bit,” Salazar said.

Salazar said the remains found were charred and had been in the area for several weeks. He said the victim is believed to be a female who is between 5 feet, 2 inches and 5 feet, 4 inches tall.

The Sheriff’s Office doesn’t know the race or body build the victim had.

“We need to try to identify this other victim and try to bring closure to another family that has yet to be identified,” he said.
Salazar said BCSO is reaching out to area law enforcement agencies to determine if any of them have a missing person case that might help connect the remains to any other cases.

Salazar said it may be months before the medical examiner determines who the remains belong to, but in the meantime, investigators will continue to look for evidence in both cases.

He said he has authorized an increase in the size of the Homicide Unit.

“This is not a small-town sheriff’s office. This is a large, metropolitan sheriff’s office with large, metropolitan issues. Certainly, this workload isn’t something anybody wants to take on, but we do owe it to the victims and their families to make sure we’re handling their cases as efficiently and expediently as possible,” Salazar said.

Grandparents fight for custody of missing San Antonio woman’s daughter

The 8-year-old daughter of Andre and Andreen McDonald, the San Antonio woman who has been missing since March 1 and is presumed dead by law enforcement, is at the center of a custody battle between her grandparents, court records show.

Paul Anderson, the girl’s maternal grandfather, filed a petition April 5 in Bexar County district court asking a judge to appoint him the sole managing conservator of the girl and the couple’s property so he can help support the child, who has high-functioning autism.

“The child … requires substantial care and personal supervision because of a mental or physical disability and/or because recent events surrounding the disappearance of her mother,” the suit alleges.

Edward Cano, Anderson’s attorney, said the petition was a routine measure to make sure the child is cared for in the absence of her parents.

The girl’s father, Andre McDonald, faces a tampering with evidence charge in connection with his wife’s disappearance and is prohibited from contacting his daughter as a condition of his bond. Authorities believe the girl may have seen something happen to her mother.

But Jean Brown, an attorney representing Hyacinth Smith, the girl’s maternal grandmother, described the custody case in a much different light.

She said Smith, who split with Anderson several years ago, was unaware Anderson was seeking custody of the child until Friday, a week after the petition was filed.

“He did not tell my client about this suit,” Brown said. “She found out through a third party.”

Brown said Smith is in a better position to take care of the girl because she has been consistently involved in the her upbringing. She said Anderson, who lives in England, visited the family about once a year.

“Mom is not in that home. Dad is not in that home,” Brown said. “The only constant in that girl’s life is her grandmother.”

According to Cano, Anderson filed the petition because he did not have access to basic information regarding the girl’s upbringing and McDonald’s household. In the petition, he asked a judge for temporary or permanent conservatorship of his daughter and son-in-law’s property.

“I spoke to the girl’s special education manager and teacher, and they both say that this little girl’s behavior has changed since this incident,” Brown said. “She was head of her class. They said it was obvious someone at home spent a lot of time working with her.”

“Subsequent to this incident, this little girl has turned very dark,” Brown added. “She says things like, ‘I’m going to kill you. I’m going to cut you up. I’m going to burn you.’”

Missing mom Andreen McDonald's daughter can now get mental treatment, judge rules

The young daughter of missing mother Andreen McDonald will be able to receive mental treatment now that she is in the care of her grandmother, a judge ruled on Wednesday.

The child's grandfather had petitioned a judge to have authority in matters of the 8-year-old girl's medical and educational care, but he was denied.

It's been nearly three months since Andreen McDonald disappeared. Her husband, Andre McDonald is charged in connection with the case.

He is out on bond and is not allowed to see his daughter.

A little girl remains in the care of her grandmother, Hyacinth Smith. Wednesday's ruling paves the way for Smith to make choices related to the girl's medical care and education.

"The little girl's mom is gone we don’t know where she is. The little girl's dad doesn’t have the right to be around her or talk to her," said Smith's lawyer. "She’s eight years old and her parents of been taken away. That’s going to cause trauma."

I can't believe they were withholding medical / mental health care because of a custody issue. Not okay.

Local group prepares for new search for Andreen McDonald

Months after the disappearance of Andreen McDonald, one local search and rescue group hasn’t given up faith.

“It was a group decision to come up with the name Chain Breakers,” said Robert Green, a member of Chain Breakers Search and Rescue and Domestic Violence Assistance. “We deal with domestic violence, runaways and missing persons. The motto is to let people know that they can break away from any horrible situation, they are dealing with. We give them an option or a way out.”

Green said the group developed about three months ago when McDonald’s case came up.

“I got drawn to the case because I was a military brat, and being retired, I had that connection,” Green said. “It is a military person, Andre McDonald, Andreen’s husband, involved in the situation, and then you have the spouse, as well. Not only that but (also) their child.”

Glass said knowing Andreen McDonald's daughter is still without her mother motivates her.

The group is made up of seven members that brainstorm about searches often.

“We normally do video calls, believe it or not, up until 10 or 11 o’clock at night, discussing maps and things like that,” Glass said. “We are like family.”

The group said Andreen’s case has impacted their lives.

“It’s really hard when you end a search and haven’t found her, so we got to be there for each other. At the end of a search, we just sit on the back of a pickup to decompress," Glass said. For the last 15 minutes of the search, we talk about it. We have cried about it. We have done everything about it. We have thrown fits. We have fought about it. We want to find her.”

The Chain Breakers is planning a large search Sunday, asking for the help of community members.

They are scheduled to meet at the CVS on Blanco and Huebner roads starting at 8 a.m. to begin phase one of a three-part search they hope to have. They are also working closely with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, hoping to provide detectives on this case with more evidence that could lead to Andreen.

If you are interested in helping with the search, visit their Facebook page at The Chain Breakers Search and Rescue and Domestic Violence Assistance.

Human skull, bones found near search area for missing mother Andreen McDonald

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office is cautiously optimistic it has found the possible remains of missing mother Andreen McDonald, who was last seen February 28.

In a press conference late Thursday, Sheriff Javier Salazar said human remains were found on a property in the 600 block of Specht Road.

Sheriff Salazar says they had searched the area just days after McDonald had gone missing.

"Maybe day two, three, four, we were in this area," Salazar said. "We started close to the house, then started fanning out. On day three or four, we were up and down this road quite a bit on horseback, and so [were] our drones."

Salazar said the remains found were "somewhat bleached" from the sun and though they thought it before, they do believe these could be those of Andreen.

"It is possible," Salazar said. "As you know, we've kind of been down that route before, finding some remains off [Highway] 211 and hoping at that time that it was possibly Andreen McDonald. The difference between that case and this incident is this is actually, quite literally ground zero for Andreen McDonald."

The property is about 50 acres and the remains were found by a friend of the property owner. We're told it was a skull and other bones.

It isn't uncommon for an official identity on remains to take a while to be released. However, Sheriff Salazar says he is hopeful the evidence already collected in the case will help with a speedy identification.

"With Andreen, we do have dental records. so hopefully it won't take long to tell if it is her or not," Salazar said. "They've been there for some time, it's pretty obvious as far as the condition, there's evidence animals have moved the bones about. We may never find the entire body because of that."

SAN ANTONIO – Sheriff Javier Salazar announced the search for Andreen McDonald was finally over Saturday afternoon.

    “We found her,” Salazar said.

The bones that were discovered in an area located off Highway 281, several miles north of Loop 1604 on Thursday night were identified as Andreen McDonald, who had been missing since the end of February.

Her husband, Andre McDonald, an Air Force major, was arrested Saturday morning and charged with murder. His bail has been set at $2 million with various conditions, Salazar said.

And his bail goes back up, hopefully he won't be free again! Murder is horrible enough but to murder your wife and leave your child essentially an orphan is unforgivable.
