The Harrisonburg Police Department, Virginia State Police and the U.S. Marshal Service are searching for a missing woman and child.

Authorities say 48-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio and her 12-year-old granddaughter, Angie Carolina Rodriguez Rubio, were reported missing Tuesday morning. They were last seen around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 5 in the 2800 block of South Main Street in Harrisonburg.

HPD believes the two were abducted by Hareton Jaime Rodriguez-Sariol. Police say he has a known history of infatuation with Elizabeth.

VSP search for missing 12-year-old girl, grandmother; possibly abducted by man

State troopers in Virginia issued an Amber Alert for a 12-year-old girl and a critically missing adult alert for her grandmother.

Angie Caroline Rodriguez Rubio, age 12, and Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio, age 48 - both of Harrisburg, VA - were last seen on Sunday, August 5 around 1:30 p.m. in the 2800 block of South Main Street in Harrisonburg.

Troopers say the missing persons may be with the man who is believed to be their abductor, Hareton Jaime Rodriguez-Sariol.

All three, according to Virginia State Police, are possibly traveling in Sariol's vehicle.

Authorities say that same car was possibly involved in a vehicle fire on Interstate 66 in Warren County, VA.

It's believed that Rodriguez-Sariol is traveling north toward New York in white 2000 Volvo tractor-trailer, owned by AMG Express L.L.C., with Virginia license plate number 21739PZ.

Harrisonburg Police Department releases timeline in missing woman, granddaughter case

Police released a timeline Thursday afternoon detailing the alleged abduction of a Harrisonburg woman and her granddaughter.

Hareton Jaime Rodriguez Sariol faces two abduction charges related to the disappearance of Angie Caroline Rodriguez Rubio, 12, and Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio, 48. Police say Sariol was supposed to drive the Rubios to a home in Maryland, but they never arrived.

The following information was provided by the Harrisonburg Police Department.

On Sunday at about 1:30 p.m., Sariol was seen with the Rubios at 2347 S. Main St. in the Dukes Plaza shopping center. The trio left in Sariol’s 2001 red two-door Honda Civic.

At 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the vehicle was seen at 259 Burgess Road in the Harrisonburg Crossing shopping center.

On Monday at 3 a.m., a passerby reported a vehicle fire on Interstate 66 just west of the Interstate 81 interchange. The Honda was fully engulfed in flames and has been recovered by HPD.

On Tuesday morning, the Rubios were reported missing after not arriving at the Maryland residence. In the afternoon, an Amber alert and an endangered adult alert were issued, saying the Rubios were believed to be in “extreme danger.”

On Tuesday at 5 p.m., Sariol was arrested in Lakawanna, Pa., while driving a tractor-trailer. He remains in Pennsylvania awaiting extradition to Virginia.

Family of missing grandmother, granddaughter speak out

David Barrero, son of Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio and uncle of Angie Carolina Rodriguez Rubio, said the family is heartbroken about their abduction.

Barrero said he never imagined something like this happening to his family.

"We don't know anything at all regarding their location and everybody's very worried and very stressed about the situation," Barrero said by telephone in an interview with WHSV on Thursday afternoon.

Elizabeth and her granddaughter had been in Harrisonburg over the weekend visiting family. Police accuse Hareton Jamie Rodriquez Sariol of abducting them. While he was arrested in Pennsylvania shortly after an AMBER Alert was issued, the woman and her granddaughter were not found.

"Most of us are having nightmares at night," Barrero said.

He said he's been trying to keep calm and keep his family calm as police continue their search.

"We have been praying very much that they will be found," Barrero said.

Authorities continue search for missing woman, granddaughter

It has been more than a week since Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio and her granddaughter were last seen in Harrisonburg.

Rodriguez Sariol was arrested Tuesday in Lackawanna County, Pa., near Scranton, and charged with abduction. Rodriguez Sariol, who Virginia State Police say has a “known history of infatuation” with Elizabeth Rubio, was still awaiting extradition on Sunday.

On Saturday, state police canceled the Amber Alert for Angie Rubio per state law. The alerts are typically approved for 12-hour windows, which can be continued if new information makes it necessary to extend the alert, according to state law.

“If you just keep it going and keep it going without new leads it just becomes ineffective,” Lt. Pete Ritchie, of the Harrisonburg Police Department, said on Sunday.

On Friday, the Harrisonburg Police Department announced that it began searching for evidence by ground and air on Thursday afternoon in partnership with other agencies.

The effort includes drones to collect aerial images, ground searches with other law enforcement agencies, K-9 units and follow-up interviews with “known associates of all individuals involved,” according to a press release.

Ritchie wouldn’t say if police believe the Rubios are alive.

“We’re continuing with the investigation,” he said. “We want to the find them.”

Searching in Somerset: Agencies scour area following cell pings

Somerset was the site of a massive search for a missing 12-year-old Harrisonburg girl and her grandmother last Friday. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office was among numerous law enforcement agencies scouring the area after cellphone pings drew investigators’ attention.

Last Friday, Somerset residents and people traveling on Scuffletown Road (Route 609) caught glimpses of deputies and volunteers searching on foot and horseback for the missing woman and her granddaughter.

Orange County Sheriff Mark Amos said his office assisted with the search based on information the Harrisonburg Police Department provided regarding cellphone pings in the Somerset area. He could not confirm which of the subjects’ phones prompted the search but noted that such pings are not necessarily precise and usually encompass a 5-mile radius.

Search for missing woman, granddaughter leads police to Orange County

Speiden said he estimated there were about 45 law enforcement vehicles on his property.

Authorities were able to track cell phone records to the Somerset area of Orange County, according to the sheriff's office there.

Bill Speiden said last week law enforcement from across the state used some of his property as a staging area for a search. Police searched on horseback with Speiden as a guide because of his familiarity of the area.

2 weeks after AMBER Alert, search continues for grandmother and granddaughter

Investigators with the Harrisonburg Police Department are working with local agencies in Virginia and Pennsylvania, as well as federal authorities like the FBI and U.S. Marshals, to try and find 48-year-old Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio and her granddaughter, 12-year-old Angie Carolina Rodriguez Rubio.

Police now say he may have stopped on the shoulder of Interstate 81 somewhere between mile markers 251 and 256 between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 5.

Police believe Sariol traveled on Route 33 after coming back to Harrisonburg, using the highway to go to the Ruckersville, Somerset and Orange County areas. HPD said the vehicle was also reported on the western side of Spotsylvania County near Lane Anna.

Man Pleading Guilty to Murdering Missing Child and Woman

Authorities say the bodies of Angie Carolina and Elizabeth Rodriguez Rubio have been found in the area of Shenandoah County and Shenandoah National Park.

The Harrisonburg Police Department had been searching for the 48-year-old woman and her 12-year-old granddaughter since they were reported missing on August 7. They had been seen in Harrisonburg on August 5.

Their remains were found Wednesday, September 5.

“Because the alleged criminal conduct occurred, in part, within the Shenandoah National Park, we are working closely with the FBI to determine if additional federal charges are warranted,” said United States Attorney Thomas T. Cullen of the Western District of Virginia.

Sariol entered a plea agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. Authorities say he directed investigators to where the bodies were located.

A grand jury is expected to hear the case on September 17.
