Search underway for missing pregnant woman from the Bronx

Authorities say 39-year-old Anndrea Caruth, who is five months pregnant with her first child, hasn't been since around 11 a.m. Sunday.

Caruth runs a daycare out of her home in the Baychester section, and some parents were surprised she wasn't there when they went to drop off their kids Monday.

Caruth's boyfriend told police she walked out the door without her wallet, phone or keys and vanished.

Pregnant Daycare Operator Missing From Bronx Home Since Sunday

Police late Tuesday were searching for a daycare teacher who is five months pregnant, and who has been missing since Sunday.

As CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reported, friends said the woman would never walk away from her responsibilities, and they were assuming the worst.

Friends said Anndrea Caruth, 39, had plans to have brunch with a friend Sunday, but instead, she vanished.

Caruth’s father said police advised the family not to speak to the media while the investigation continues. But he did tell CBS2’s Sanchez he cried all night worrying about his daughter.

Late Tuesday, the family was at the 47th Precinct police station speaking with detectives.

Sources: Police Find Missing Pregnant Woman’s Body Buried In Basement Closet Of Bronx Home

A body removed from a Bronx home is that of a missing pregnant woman, according to sources.

The body was discovered covered with gravel inside a hole dug into the floor of a closet in the basement of Caruth’s Baychester home on Corsa Avenue around 3 a.m. Wednesday. The hole was covered with a piece of plywood, with a carpet over it.

Caruth’s father and her live-in boyfriend were both interviewed by police throughout the night and into the morning, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported.

Father of pregnant day care operator, 39, arrested after her body is found buried in a basement crawlspace of home she shared with him

Police have arrested the father of a pregnant woman whose body was found stuffed into a crawlspace in the basement of her New York home early Wednesday morning.

Caruth's 61-year-old father, who lived in a downstairs apartment of the home, has not been charged with any crime.

Caruth, who was five months pregnant, was last seen by her live-in boyfriend, Lincoln Grant, 44, Sunday at the home, around 10.30am. He told police that she never returned after going downstairs to get dressed.

Father Charged With Murder in Death of Pregnant Daughter

At five months pregnant, Andrea Caruth was counting down the days until she learned the gender of her baby. She had arranged to meet her best friend for a shopping trip after a doctor’s visit on Wednesday, another step toward motherhood for a woman who had looked forward to it for years as she took care of young children at a day care center in her home in the Bronx.

Instead, Ms. Caruth’s body was found crumpled in a hole beneath the basement of her home on Wednesday morning, two days after she was reported missing, the authorities said.

Her father, William Caruth, 61, was arrested later in the day and charged with murder and manslaughter.

I was a bit puzzled by this:

Caruth's boyfriend told police she walked out the door without her wallet, phone or keys and vanished.

Caruth, who was five months pregnant, was last seen by her live-in boyfriend, Lincoln Grant, 44, Sunday at the home, around 10.30am. He told police that she never returned after going downstairs to get dressed.

But it seems that first report has now been corrected, as it has no mention of "out the door". So was that a reporter's mistake/speculation/making stuff up, or what.

Anyway, what a terrible loss. If her father indeed killed her ---- I struggle to comprehend why.

While Caruth’s dad has yet to be charged with a crime, investigators believe he killed the mom-to-be because the two had been arguing over money recently, sources said, adding that the murder appeared to have been well-planned.

Sources said that she had been at her house that morning when she went down to the basement to change a light.

While doing this, authorities believe her father, who lives in the basement, started some sort of argument with her — killing her soon after, sources said.

Okay, so there's a possible motive.

... but is that yet another version of why Anndrea went downstairs? Changing clothes... changing lightbulb... And again, I have to wonder if these dicrepancies are coming from reporters who can't fact-check to save themselves, or from the BF himself.

    .... and yet more versions!

The motive for the slaying was not clear, police said.

A machete and a hammer were recovered from the home, and two additional buckets of gravel were found outside the residence on Corsa Ave.

William Caruth, who was visited by police on five occasions for domestic incidents between 2001 and 2013, was also charged with manslaughter after cops uncovered his daughter’s remains. She was five months pregnant.

There was a dispute between the father and daughter over a second mortgage taken out on the home by Anndrea Caruth, with the dad apparently giving the cash to someone else, one source said.

Boyfriend Lincoln Grant, 44, had called 911 on Monday to report Caruth missing one day after she disappeared.

Grant told police that she never returned after going downstairs about 10:30 a.m. Sunday to get dressed for a brunch date. The couple had known each other since 2001, sources said.

The Daily News reported that investigators found spattered blood in the father's downstairs apartment.

According to NBC New York, sources say the father had been stealing money from his daughter and took out a second mortgage on the home he shared with her and her boyfriend without her knowledge.

When she discovered what he did, the day care operator confronted him, which seemingly led to the deadly confrontation.

A family friend told NBC New York that the father was a 'very controlling, very stern, very firm man.' They also said that the pair had a difficult relationship and there were 'issues sometimes about money.'

So it seems her dad had a motive, "sources" say. Not confirmed by police, yet, though.

I'm kind of wondering why the bf didn't call police for a whole day... reading between reports quoting "sources", I see that Anndrea apparently left the upper floor, went down presumably to the ground floor to "get dressed", and was perhaps then lured into the basement "to change a light" (where'd that snippet come from, I wonder?) and was killed. if there was an "argument" (as apparently one "source" reported), it apparently was not heard upstairs. Perhaps it was a sudden attack.

Okay, but.... if your pregnant wife (or say, daughter, mother, whoever) went downstairs t0 get dressed and then utterly vanished..no goodbye at all... .. leaving keys, wallet, phone, etc... and her car is still right there in driveway... and you *knew* there'd been issues with the person in the basement... would you wait a whole 24 hrs before calling around friends.. and then calling police? Just seems odd to me. But then, people deal with things in different ways, I guess. Just to me, that's very very different to what I would expect someone to do.

Ok - sorry for all the posts. Just, there's something about this case that is not sitting right with me.

So Anndrea's house was, according to reports, in her name alone. But somehow, her dad managed to take out a 2nd mortgage on it (for what I must presume was a hefty sum) -- and then apparently "gave the cash to someone else" --- WHO? And why???

I get the feeling there was much more going on in that house that has so far been reported.
