Roanoke police search for missing 3-month-old child

A search is underway for a missing 3-month-old in Roanoke.

Officials said Arieanna Day was reported missing around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night in the 1100 block of Hanover Avenue.

Day's mother told officers she put her to bed around 10:00 p.m., and when she later went to check on her she was gone.

Police said there was no sign that Day was taken by force, and called the circumstances unusual.

Police said right now this case does not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert.

Officers have searched the immediate area for Day, and Roanoke police has requested the assistance of the Blacksburg Police Department. They are expected to conducted a ground search in Blacksburg.

Search underway for missing Roanoke 3-month-old baby girl
"I am very concerned about the child's life" - Roanoke Police Chief Tim Jones

Police say the circumstances of the child's disappearance do not meet the criteria for an Amber Alert. That is due to the fact that there is no possible suspect description or vehicle description, according to Roanoke Police Chief Tim Jones.

RPD officers went to 1100 block of Hanover Ave NW after 11 p.m. to investigate a reported abduction.

The mother told officers that she put her child in bed around 10 p.m., however, when she returned to Arieanna's bed, at about 11 p.m., she wasn't there.

"I don't know if she's living. I don't know where she's at. It's painful for my family, so I'm reaching out for help," said Sophia Bryant, Arieanna's grandmother.

Police say that there is no indication that the child was taken by force. The house was not locked at the time of the alleged abduction, according to police.

Jones called the circumstance unusual during Wednesday's news conference.

"A 3-month-old child in need of nourishment is a very critical circumstance, so the sooner we locate this child the better off we will be in all aspects," said Jones

A man who claims to be Arieanna's father told officers that he did not have the child and is cooperating with the investigation, according to Jones.

In the process of the investigation, authorities have searched the immediate area and the surrounding neighborhood.

Officers are also working with Blacksburg police after getting a tip about a possible location there.

CRITICAL & URGENT: Police searching for missing 3-month-old baby who ‘vanished from crib’

“This circumstance is unusual,” a Roanoke police spokesperson said during a media brief on Wednesday. “And the individual claiming to be the father of the missing child soon arrived at the residence to speak with the investigating officers. He told officers on the scene last night that he did not have the child. Both parents continue to cooperate with investigators. Someone out there knows what happened to this child.”

Roanoke officers searched the immediate area of the residence and throughout the neighborhood. They’ve also requested the assistance of the Blacksburg Police Department after they were given “an address of interest” in the Blacksburg area.

“At three months old, I am very concerned about the child’s life,” the officer continued. “I am very troubled that when you look at the medical research related to a 3-month-old infant in need of sustenance, we have about an 18 to 24-hour window.”

    It's already been 24 hours. :(

How many times, when a parent says the child disappears from their bedroom, has it actually happened? I can think of a few. But I can think of way more when it was absolute BS.

    Hoping for Arieanna's safety.

There's a possible break in the case of a missing 3-month-old Roanoke girl.

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office confirmed that an overnight arrest is related to the disappearance of Arieanna Day.

Dozens of officers and search and rescue crew members are at North Fork Baptist Church on Jenelle Road near the railroad tracks.

There are search and rescue boats and many law enforcement officers at the scene.

31-year-old Andrew Christopher Terry, of Roanoke, has been arrested and charged in connection with the illegal disposal of a body.

Investigators from the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office made the arrest after being contacted by Roanoke police to assist with an investigation.

A Roanoke man is accused of illegally disposing of a body.

Andrew Christopher Terry, a 31-year-old Roanoke resident, was arrested around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Roanoke detectives had reached out to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office to help with an active criminal investigation.

Terry is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bond.

This is a developing story. We're working to find out more.

I wonder if Terry is the person the grandmother suspected. Why would he walk into a house and take and want to hurt an innocent baby?

I don't know this family at all so don't assume this must be true, but sometimes children were harmed prior to them leaving the home. Or, they were sick and weren't taken to a doctor right away and the family is worried about getting in trouble.

With the charges of illegal disposal of a body...I'm wondering if he didn't get a phone call from the house that something happened, and he took her away to hide what happened.
No kidnapping charges. No murder charges (though I'm sure those will come to someone soon.)

The search continues for missing Roanoke 3 month old

Shocked and stunned. Neighbors said seeing that many law enforcement agencies in their community was out of the ordinary.

"I do recall hearing about the baby last night, but I never did think that would be the reason that they were here," said Tracy Cranfield, who lives across the street from search staging area.

"And it's very odd because this community is very quiet and everyone knows everybody and this is a small community. So when something like this happens, it's a big deal," said Tracy Cranfield, who lives across the street from search staging area.

She says she hadn't seen anything suspicious leading up to the multiple agencies gathering at the church.

"I would have never expected this," said Tracy Cranfield, who lives across the street from search staging area.

Tracy says she can't imagine what Arieanna Day's family is going through and says her heart goes out to the family.

"And it makes you want to hug your children closer," said Tracy Cranfield, who lives across the street from search staging area.

Montgomery County arrest related to case of missing 3-month-old Roanoke child, police say

Arieanna Day, a 3-month-old child who disappeared from her Roanoke home on Tuesday, is likely dead, police say.

“We are continuing our investigation with this in mind, and hope that we can bring closure to this case and family,” Roanoke police spokeswoman Caitlyn Cline said.

Andrew Christopher Terry, 31, is being held in the Montgomery County jail with no bond, the sheriff’s office said.

Roanoke police have not said if Terry is a suspect in the disappearance of Day. The connection between Terry and the missing child remains unclear.

“We are not releasing how Terry is connected to Day at this time,” Cline said.

Cline said Terry did not live at the Roanoke address where the child was living.

It appears they are still searching for Arieanna. They're being very tight-lipped about this one at the moment.

This was the rumor I was seeing elsewhere. Now we know for sure.

Man charged with body disposal is missing infant's father, Roanoke search warrant says

A Roanoke man jailed after the presumed death of 3-month-old Arieanna Day is thought to be the baby’s father.

“The infants [sic] father Andrew Terry was on scene as well and has had communication with the mother in the time leading up to the report being made,” says a search warrant made public on Tuesday. Search warrants in the case vary between calling Terry “the infants [sic] father” and “the baby’s possible father.”

Terry is charged with illegal disposal of a body and is being held in the Montgomery County Jail. No body has been recovered .

Day’s mother contacted police last week saying she had left the girl in a bed and returned later to find she was missing from the house in the 1100 block of Hanover Avenue. She contacted Terry over Facebook Messenger about Day before contacting police, a warrant says.

Police seized shirts, carpeting and swabs from a black Nissan Maxima they associate with Terry, one warrant says. They also took DNA samples and paperwork from the Hanover Avenue house, according to a second warrant.

Search warrant: Mother of missing Roanoke baby did not call police right away

The mother of a missing Roanoke infant did not call police immediately after she discovered her baby was missing, search warrants reveal.

Instead, she reportedly spent time sending messages on Facebook.

Roanoke Police believe there is a "realistic possibility" that the missing three-month-old baby Arieanna Day is most likely dead.

Police executed search warrants on September 12 for the two Facebook accounts of the baby's mother.

According to the documents, the mother contacted the baby's father via Facebook messenger using one of her accounts and told him about the missing baby before calling the police.

Police state in the warrant, they believe the Facebook accounts "belonging to the mother would help in locating the child." The documents reveal she may have used another Facebook account and "communicated with other facebookers prior to calling police."

Separate search warrants confirm that 31-year-old Andrew Terry is the father of missing Arieanna Day.

Clues sought in missing infant case

It’s been nine days since a Montgomery County woman reported her 3-month-old infant missing.

A Roanoke man, Andrew Terry, stands charged with illegally disposing of a body in connection with the case. However, police have yet to find Arieanna Day.

Tuesday night Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office conducted an “informational checkpoint” on Jennelle Road in that county in an effort to obtain information on the child’s disappearance.

According to Lt. Mark Hollandsworth, police believe Terry was operating a black Nissan Maxima, with Virginia tag VWP-1130, in the vicinity of North Fork, Jennelle and Cedar Run Roads between 9 and 11 p.m. Sept. 11 — the day the infant was reported missing.

“We are looking for anyone who may have observed this vehicle pulled off on the side of the previously named roads during that time frame,” Hollandsworth said in a press release issued Tuesday afternoon.

Investigations Capt. Edward F. Hertling Jr. said 58 vehicles were checked during Tuesday’s two-hour checkpoint, enabling investigators to speak with 73 people.

“We did get a couple of helpful tips that we are currently running down, but nothing specifically drawing us immediately to any specific area to be searched,” Hertling said.

Hollandsworth says investigators did generate some tips in Day’s disappearance through a post on its Facebook page. Those, too, are being followed up on.

No other details of the case are being released. Anyone who thinks they may have information pertinent to the case is asked to call the Criminal Investigations Division at 540-382-6915, ext. 44418.

Mothers pens letter to missing Roanoke baby on 4-month birthday

    "Beautiful Arieanna,

You’re 4 months old today. Baby girl, some days it’s hard to remember to breathe without you here. The pain is unbearable. How can I sleep when I don’t know where you’re sleeping? How are we supposed to go on?

We have hope that you are out there somewhere alive and will be home soon. But if you are not we know you’re in heaven looking down on us and we know you are watching and want us to be strong because you left us with beautiful memories.

I wish you were here with us wearing a pretty pink bow in your hair and your million dollar smile lighting up the room. We would celebrate and watch you laugh.

A baby as innocent and perfect as you shouldn’t have to come face to face with real life monsters. You are loved and missed by all of us. Every second of every day. Your brother and sisters ask about you and I don’t know what to tell them. They’ve asked if I need help looking for you. How does a mother answer that question?

Baby girl, we will never stop looking for you. Never. We pray every day you will return to us safely.

    Happy Birthday Arieanna Renee.

    We love you,
Mommy, your big brother and sisters"
