Virginia Beach police searching for missing 19-year-old woman; disappeared under "suspicious circumstances"

Police are searching for a 19-year-old woman who went missing under "suspicious circumstances," police said.

Ashanti Markaila Billie was last seen Monday around 4 a.m. in the 4400 block of Bonney Road at the Midtown at Town Center Apartments. Police said Billie never showed up for work near Shore Drive and Little Creek Road. She also did not attend her scheduled college classes near Town Center.

Police said they consider Billie's disappearance suspicious because it is not like her to miss work or school. Police also said her personal property was located in another jurisdiction.

Family and friends can't figure out what happened to missing Virginia Beach woman

When Andrew Estrada got to work Monday at a Blimpie sub shop at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, he was surprised to find no one there.

Ashanti Billie was scheduled to open that morning. The 19-year-old assistant manager is reliable and never late, Estrada said. She should have been there hours earlier.

“I knew something was wrong, and I called my boss,” he said.

Next, Estrada decided to try Billie.

“I had a really bad feeling when I called her phone,” he said.

His suspicion was confirmed moments later, when a strange man answered.

He told Estrada he found the phone in a dumpster in Norfolk, undamaged and fully charged. The man, who Estrada believes is a construction worker, said it seemed strange it would be thrown away when it was in good condition, so he took it in hopes that the owner would call and he could return it to them.

That was sometime after 9 a.m. Monday.

Billie also did not attend her classes that day at the Art Institute of Virginia Beach, where she studies culinary arts . She moved to Virginia Beach last month to start school there, said her mother, Brandy Billie of Maryland.

Police locate missing college student Ashanti Billie’s car

Officers confirmed they located the Mini Cooper of missing Virginia Beach college student Ashanti Billie on Saturday.

While Billie’s Mini Cooper was found, the 19-year-old remains still missing, Virginia Beach Police officials said.

Police said Billie is considered a missing person under suspicious circumstances due to the uncharacteristic behavior of her not showing up to work or school.

Her father, Meltony Billie, told WTKR that his daughter's cellphone was found in a dumpster.

'It's another bread crumb closer,' day-6 searching for missing teen

A big step forward on day six in the search to bring missing Virginia Beach 19-year-old, Ashanti Billie home.

A 13News Now viewer send pictures of Ashanti’s car to us. Virginia Beach Police confirmed this white Mini Cooper is hers.

It was seen traveling eastbound on I-264 around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, chained up to a Virginia Beach Public Works Fleet Management Car.

The car was found in Norfolk and the license plate on the back is a perfect match.

"It's another bread crumb closer," said Ashanti’s father, Meltony Billie.

And investigators began searching for Billie after she didn't show up to any of her college classes, or for work near Shore Drive and Little Creak Road.

Now her parents say the next step is the most important.

"The next step is locating her,” said Meltony Billie.

Ashanti's parents said they see the progress in looking for their daughter. She was last seen around 4:00 AM on Monday at the Midtown at Town Center Apartments, in Virginia Beach.

Ashanti’s phone was found in a dumpster four miles away from her last known location.

Beautiful girl. Did she have a boyfriend? Could she have taken off to go see him and he picked her up where her car was left? We had a case similar to what I'm describing not too long ago and the woman was found safe.

FBI offers $10K reward for information leading to missing Virginia Beach teen

The FBI is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to the discovery of a missing 19-year-old college student.

Police originally asked the public to notify them if they spotted Billie’s cream-colored Mini Cooper. The car was located on Sunday.

Before her car was located, some of Billie’s property was found in another jurisdiction.

“Due to the uncharacteristic behavior of her not showing up to neither work or school and that her personal property was located in another jurisdiction, Billie is being considered a missing person under suspicious circumstances,” a VBPD press release states.

She is described as being 4-feet-11-inches and weighing about 133 pounds.

Distraught Family Of Missing Virginia Teen Ashanti Billie Asks For Help And Prayers For Her Safe Return

The family and friends of a missing Virginia Beach, Virginia, teen gathered on Sunday night to pray for her safe return.

"The last place her vehicle was seen was entering a military installation, where she showed her ID card. The vehicle left off with the last time my baby was seen ... our baby was entering gate one Little Creek gate. So, whatever happened, it happened on that installation," Brandy Billie, Ashanti’s mother, told 13 News Now.

Meltony, Ashanti’s father, and Brandy Billie served years and multiple deployments with the Army.

Although there is not much information, Brandy believes someone was involved in her daughter’s disappearance.

"This is not her, so something happened to her... someone took her, someone did something to her. They took her from her vehicle," Brandy told 13 News Now.

The mother also said she is grateful many agencies are coming together to help with the search.

"Norfolk [police], Virginia Beach [police], the FBI, NCIS... so there are people working on it,” Brandy told 13 News Now.

Ashanti's family said they are determined to stay in Virginia until Ashanti is back. On Monday, the family plans to speak with Congressman Scott Taylor about the investigation

US Navy Little Creek Amphibious Base, Norfolk / JEB Little Creek-Fort Story, VA

Who does Ashanti know at that military base??? Does she have her own access to the base or did someone request that she be allowed access? Should be pretty simple to figure out a name.

    Chilling. These poor, loving parents.
Maybe somebody had been watching her at work. Knew her schedule. Waited.
    I pray not.

Video shows missing Virginia Beach woman’s car entering, exiting Army base

The FBI has released new video of a missing Virginia Beach woman's car entering and leaving Joint Expeditionary Base-Little Creek on September 18.

The video shows Ashanti Billie's white Mini Cooper entering JEB Gate 3 at approximately 4:44 a.m. Billie worked at the Blimpie sandwich shop on base, WTKR reports.

According to the FBI, there was an accident on the base and the car was turned around. Video shows the car coming back out of the gate at approximately 4:47 a.m.

After coming out of Gate 3, Billie drove to Gate 1 and entered the base there just before 5 a.m.

That's the last time Billie's car was seen until it was found in Ocean View the Saturday after her disappearance.

Well, that answers one question I had. I somehow overlooked that her job was on base before.

Looks like that shop just opened about a month ago. Looks like the food court area opens at 6:30 am on weekdays. https://www.mynavyexchange.com/storelocator/storedetails.jsp?storeid=016 And Ashanti was scheduled to open per the article in the OP.

What in the heck happened between 5am and 9am (when her co-worker/boss called her phone)??? Certainly there are cameras. This is a military base... Did she stop off somewhere before work? Did someone interrupt her opening up for work?

Federal Bureau of Investigation releases video of missing woman's vehicle at JEB Little Creek

In an effort to find a 19-year-old woman who went missing under suspicious circumstances in Virginia Beach last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has released two videos that show some of her final recorded moments.

She recently colored her hair red, Pullen said.

The FBI is working jointly with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), Virginia Beach Police Department, and the Norfolk Police Department to locate Ashanti.

Reward increased to $20,000 for info leading to Ashanti Billie

The FBI has released video of Ashanti Billie's car entering JEB the morning on Monday, September 18.

The FBI has announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the location of missing college student Ashanti Billie.

Now, it's doubled to $20,000 after Blimpie contributed to the reward money. That's according to Jeff Wallace, the Vice President of Operations at Blimpie.

A local group is also organizing a volunteer search that will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Taylho Terrace and Azalea Garden Dr. in Norfolk on Thursday, Sept. 28.

The concerned parents approached Taylor because he was a Navy SEAL. Taylor said he plans to talk to the Naval base. "Obviously, there's CCC'd cameras. There's -- the phone was found. There's a beacon that triangulates the position that you can get."

"Blimpie has not reached out to us. Well, no one has and for me, myself, I'm holding the base commander responsible. Cause that was the last place my kid was seen," said Meltony.

    my two guesses:
it's either somebody "higher up" or "well connected" and on video with her o
they are now going to have to admit their equipment failed and the base is not safe.

    Very possible.

Another possibility - Could be they are watching someone specific to see if that person might lead them to Ashanti. Taking some time and putting together a case against someone. This one is extremely frustrating but can be necessary sometimes. Especially if your #1 above is true.

Volunteers conduct search in Virginia for missing 19-year-old Ashanti Billie

A search took place on Thursday in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach area for a 19-year-old woman who grew up in Prince George’s County in Maryland.

It has been ten days since Ashanti Billie drove to Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Norfolk on Sept. 18. Her car was last seen leaving a half hour later that day, but there has been no sign of her since then.

Searchers gathered at Azalea Gardens Road and Tallyho Terrace Thursday afternoon, the same area where Billie’s phone was found.

“We have a couple of people out doing searches in different parts of the neighborhood and we are just pretty much standing in front of where the phone was found – the dumpster,” said LaToya Carr, who helped organize the search.

It was over like a hundred and some people that came out here today,” said searcher Kimberly Wimbish. “So far, we have just been out here searching the scene and looking and we are finding stuff.”

She said they found a sock, a braid nearby a church parking lot and a braid in a wooded area and a piece of clothing during their search. The searchers contacted and informed police about the items they located.

Where is Ashanti Billie? Relatives, strangers search for clues about Virginia Beach 19-year-old's disappearance

Bloody scratches covered Karrie Nelson’s arms when she emerged from the wooded area, searching for a missing woman she doesn’t even know. Splotches of blood dotted her blue jeans, too.

“It’s all thorn bushes back there,” Nelson, 48, said .

Nelson, of Norfolk, was one of more than 75 people who showed up Thursday evening at the edge of a residential neighborhood in Norfolk where Ashanti Billie’s cellphone was found.

The search fell on the 11th day that the 19-year-old has been missing. Relatives involved in the search party weren’t looking for a body, though: They remain hopeful .

Some of the groups walked along the woodline of the woods across the street from dumpster. Some people poked walking sticks into the brush or even took a few steps in if they saw something that caught their eye.

Nelson went all the way in. She trekked to the body of water on the other side of the thick brush. And she walked the water line for a mile or so. She found some animal skeletons, but nothing else.

Other searchers came across items that they found as they walked the neighborhood. There was a sweatshirt, a phone charger and a gas can. And someone found a pink shoe at the location where Billie’s car was found. Someone called the police, and a Norfolk police officer showed up to look into it.

The two-hour search came off with the support of the FBI, which has taken the lead on the investigation.

Body found in Charlotte could be that of missing woman Ashanti Billie

The parents of a local woman who has been missing for almost two weeks are traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina, after a landscaping worker there found the body of woman near a church.

The landscaping worker in Charlotte found the body of a young woman near East AME Zion Church and called 911.

The body has not been identified, nor have police determined if foul play was involved.

A spokeswoman for Billie's family members said they were aware of the situation in Charlotte and asked that everyone pray that the woman found dead was not Billie.

Statement from family of missing Ashanti Billie expected Saturday night

A statement from Ashanti Billie’s parents is expected Saturday evening, according to a family spokesperson.

“On behalf of the Ashanti Billie family we ask for your continued prayers,” Kimberly Wimbish said in a statement. “We would like to thank the communities in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina and throughout the nation for all the love and support they have shown to the family during this crisis.”

The statement will come nearly 24 hours after an FBI spokesperson said the agency was aware of human remains found in Charlotte, N.C. and was looking into whether they belonged to Billie.

FOX 46 in Charlotte reported Friday that a body was found around 9:30 a.m. by a man cutting the grass at East Stonewall AME Zion Church in Charlotte. The news station also told Southside Daily the FBI asked the family to travel to North Carolina to identify that body.
