Search for missing teen continues– over 48 hours after being reported

Federal, state, and local agencies continue their search for a 16-year-old girl that was last seen, over 48 hours ago, on a hiking trail in Johnson County, TN.

Ava Zechiel is a Washington, D.C. native. She was last seen Wednesday hiking on the Iron Mountain Trail in the Shady Valley area of the Cherokee National Forest. The area is described as rural, rugged and dangerous.

The Johnson county sheriff’s office told us Zechiel is a student at Freedom Mountain Academy, which is a boarding school for troubled teens.

Officials say it was during one of the school’s excursions that she was reported missing. Zechiel had only attended the school for two months.

Search for girl missing from boarding school, FBI now involved

While teams are out on the ground and in the air, authorities are doing a thorough background check on the girl's school, the Freedom Mountain Academy in Mountain City.

"We have spoke with them some. They're not being too forthcoming with some information. I will tell you this. We have the FBI on the way to speak with them," Reece said.

Ava survived 6 days by herself! If that doesn't show she's capable of anything, I'm not sure what does.

Ava's mother, Erin Zechiel, said on Facebook that Ava was unable to walk and had to be carried out of the woods.

'Ava can't walk so they are carrying her out of the woods right now. She is healthy enough to bring her to us before she goes to the hospital,' the mother wrote.

'Thanks to everyone for your prayers and positive thoughts. If you want to show gratitude, please donate to the Johnson County, TN Fire Dept, the Shady Valley, TN police department.

'We will gather the lists of search and rescue teams responsible for finding Ava and share them with you all. You can't imagine my joy.'

Later on Tuesday afternoon the mother wrote again calling Ava a 'hero'.

'My daughter is a super hero,' she wrote. 'She survived six days in the Cherokee National Forest BY HERSELF!'
