POLICE have launched a cold case investigation into the murder of a baby boy found cut in half on a Cairns driveway 20 years ago.

Latest DNA analysis is behind a fresh breakthrough in the unsolved killing of the newborn in a high-profile case that shocked a nation.

“It’s a profoundly disturbing case,” said Northern Region Crime Co-ordinator Detective Inspector Geoff Marsh said yesterday.

“It is two decades since the tragic death of that young child. But police have not given up hope of finding a resolution and bringing the culprits to justice.”

Residents in suburban Cairns discovered the infant’s death when they saw a dog chewing on the upper half of the baby’s torso in their front yard in May 1996.

“There has been a remarkable leap of technology in DNA analysis ... We are delving deeper.’’
