    Baleigh Bagshaw; Shaun French

Baleigh Bagshaw was found dead inside her Salt Lake City home just after 3 p.m. Monday when cops conducted a welfare check, FOX13 Salt Lake City reported. Authorities said the 15-year-old’s mother was on the phone with the girl when someone attacked her. The mother heard part of the assault before the phone went dead.

Shaun French, 24, was initially identified as a person of interest in Bagshaw’s death prior to his arrest on Wednesday, according to Salt Lake City police. They added that he was "now a suspect."

There had been an active warrant out for French’s arrest stemming from a previous unlawful sexual encounter he had with the teen, police said.

Police have not released details on the slaying. “It was a very violent attack,” Sgt. Brandon Shearer told reporters, according to People.

A former high school classmate of French told KUTV that she was not surprised by the news of his arrest.

Utah mother who was on phone with teen daughter as she was murdered calls for justice
    POSTED 1:31 PM, MAY 13, 2018

Bagshaw recalled her last conversation with Baleigh on Monday afternoon. She said Baleigh would usually call her on her way home from the bus after school, and the pair would chat as she let her dogs outside and checked the mail for her mother.
Police tracked French down in Colorado, and he is set to be extradited back to Utah, though that process has been delayed because French requested a Utah lawyer to represent him.

Friends said 24-year-old accused of killing Utah girl was ‘obsessed’ with her

Newly filed court documents show the 24-year-old man accused of killing a Utah teenager had repeatedly called her in the days before her death and went to meet with her the day she died concerning accusations that he raped her.
French stopped at Bagshaw’s Salt Lake City home, near 1600 West and 500 North, to talk to her about the rape allegations, a friend who was with him at the time told police. French reportedly left the friend at a park and went to Bagshaw’s house. When he came back, he had blood on his face and hands and said he’d cut the girl’s throat, according to the court documents.
They first drove to Evanston, Wyo., where French reportedly dumped a backpack full of bloody clothing in a convenience store trash can.

Salt Lake City investigators searched the Uintah County landfilland found a backpack full of bloody clothing, a balaclava, duct tape, rubber gloves, latex gloves and a knife, according to court documents.

Utahn ordered to stand trial in West High student's slaying

A judge has ordered a Utah man to stand trial in the death of a 15-year-old girl investigators say he had harassed online after their relationship ended.

Third District Judge Royal Hansen ruled Tuesday there is enough evidence for Shaun Patrick French, 26, to be tried on a charge of aggravated murder in the 2018 death of West High School student Baleigh Bagshaw. Prosecutors have not yet indicated whether they will seek the death penalty.

French is also charged with sexual exploitation of a minor and newer counts of witness tampering after he allegedly made calls from jail seeking to persuade his brother and another man not to testify, court records show. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

On Monday, the first day of a preliminary hearing, his brother Cody French recalled Shaun French saying he had slit the girl’s throat and testified that his brother discussed suicide after their relationship ended.

Prosecutor seeks death penalty for man accused of killing Baleigh Bagshaw

Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill is seeking the death penalty for the man accused of killing 15-year-old Baleigh Bagshaw.

The prosecutor this month filed a notice to seek the death penalty if Shaun Patrick French is found guilty in the May 2018 case.

French, 24, is charged with aggravated murder and sex crimes against Bagshaw; French lived in Bagshaw’s Salt Lake City home for several months in 2017.

In charging documents, police wrote that French admitted to a friend that he killed Bagshaw, saying he “damn near cut her head off" when he went to discuss sex crime allegations she’d made against him.

Five days before she was killed, Bagshaw had told her mother that French had been having sex with her, starting when she was 14. According to court documents, French called Bagshaw 13 times that day. Her mother then received explicit photos of Bagshaw from a newly created social media account that Bagshaw and her mother believed French had created.

The day after Bagshaw told her mom about French, he called his brother, saying he was going to be charged with rape and wanted to cut his own throat, the charges state.

Instead, prosecutors wrote, French told a friend a few days later that he was going to Bagshaw’s home to talk to her; when he returned, he had blood on his face and hands and said he’d cut the girl’s throat, according to the court documents.

After Bagshaw’s death, French returned to his friend and told him they had to leave town, setting off to Evanston, Wyo., to flee police and dump evidence, according to court documents. French reportedly tossed a backpack full of bloody clothing in a convenience store trash can. Salt Lake City investigators searched the Uintah County landfill, where they found a backpack full of bloody clothing, a balaclava, duct tape, rubber gloves, latex gloves and a knife, according to court documents.
