Ferree disappeared in October of 1991 after being at a party in the 500 block of South 12th Street.

The police investigation at the time determined an argument began at the party, during which suspect Gary Quisenberry, who were living together with Ferree in Chickasha, allegedly threw a portable television which struck Ferree in the head, killing her. At the time of the disappearance, Quisenberry told police that he had gone out for cigarettes and Ferree had left before his return.

In 1996, Quisenberry was arrested in Caddo County on charges of obstruction relating to stolen property. At that time, he reportedly confessed to a Chickasha Police Captain that he had in fact killed Ferree and buried her body. Quisenberry's story differed from the 1991 investigation. He told police he and Ferree were drinking on the tailgate of his pickup out near Gracemont. During a verbal altercation, Quisenberry said he hit her in the neck and must have either broken her neck or crushed her windpipe.

Quisenberry reportedly showed police where the body had been buried, but a thorough search with cadaver dogs revealed nothing.
Lack of a body, or solid evidence combined with conflicting stories prevented charges from being filed in the case, even with an admission of guilt.

    • Clothing/Jewelry DescriptionA size large red, white blue checkered or plaid long-sleeved blouse, size 10 or 12 blue jeans with brass buttons, size 8 white canvas sneakers, and a white gold engagement ring with a row of three or four stones.
    • Distinguishing CharacteristicsCaucasian female. Brown hair, brown eyes. Ferree's maiden name is Thompson, and her nickname is Barbie. She has a tattoo of a rose on her right shoulder. She has at least one surgical scar, and her ears are pierced.

    Details of Disappearance
Ferree was last seen on October 3, 1991 in Chickasha, Oklahoma, at a party in the 500 block of south 12th Street where drugs and alcohol were being served. She has never been heard from again.

One person at the party, Gary Quisenberry, said Ferree had gone out for cigarettes and never returned. Police didn't believe the story, however; other witnesses stated Quisenberry and Ferree got into an argument and Quisenberry threw a television set at her and killed her.

In 1996, Quisenberry was arrested on unrelated charges of check fraud. While in custody, he confessed to Ferree's murder. Quisenberry said he and Ferree were drinking together at his pickup truck near Gracemont, Oklahoma when they got into an argument and Quisenberry struck her on the neck, killing her. There were some reports that she had been dismembered after her death.

He led investigators to an area in rural Caddo County, Oklahoma, outside Gracemont, saying he had buried the body there. By this time, a new road had been built in the vicinity. Police searched for weeks, but found nothing, and Quisenberry was charged with obstruction of justice.

Another witness came forward when police were searching the Caddo County location and said they'd seen Quisenberry's sister, Belinda Sue "Susie" Lee, cutting up Ferree's identification cards. Lee allegedly told the witness she had killed Ferree herself and buried her "right under their noses." Based on the witness's information, police searched a Chickasha home for the body. They found nothing there, either.

Quisenberry has never been charged in Ferree's case due to lack of evidence. Foul play is suspected in her disappearance, which remains unsolved.

After 17 years, disappearance remains a mystery
    • Karen Brady
    • Aug 15, 2008
The disappearance of a Chickasha woman remains a mystery after nearly 17 years.

The family of Barbara K. Ferree, in an attempt to find some kind of closure, recently offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for Ferree’s Oct. 3, 1991 disappearance.

While Ferree disappeared in 1991, it was not until July 1996 when a man arrested in Caddo County gave law enforcement officials information regarding the whereabouts of her body.

Then Chickasha Police Captain of Detectives Gary Bray said, up to this point, investigators had exhausted all leads..

The man, identified as Gary Quisenberry, reportedly confessed to authorities that he had murdered Ferree in October 1991 and that he could lead them to her body, saying she was buried in Caddo County southwest of Gracemont.

Authorities searched the area Quisenberry named for several days with cadaver dogs, even going over the sandrock terrain on horseback, but did not find any trace of Ferree’s remains. Authorities speculated, because of the rocky terrain, the body was buried in a shallow grave.

“Gary Bray worked the case,” said Chickasha Police Chief Lynn Williams. “We went to Gracemont and they had cut a new road in the area the body was reportedly buried. We also went to a couple of yards here in town.”

Williams also said there was talk that Ferree had been “cut up.”

According to reports, Ferree and Quisenberry who were living together in Chickasha, had been drinking and doing drugs and had an argument prior to Ferree’s disappearance.

Despite his reported confession of Ferree’s murder, Quisenberry has never been tried for the crime.

Members of Ferree’s family, who feel Quisenberry did not tell the truth about the location of Ferree’s remains, want to put the situation behind them and get on with their lives.

The family is offering the $500 reward in hopes that someone will come forward with information that will enable authorities to locate Ferree’s remains.

“We just want to put it behind us and give her a proper burial and get on with our lives,” said Ferree’s daughter Lisa. “It’s like we’re in limbo. We want to know where she’s at. Anyone who knows anything about this, if they have an ounce of humanity, we hope they will come forward and give this family peace.”

If you have any information regarding the disappearance of Barbara K. Ferree, you are asked to call Crime Stoppers at 405-224-8477. Any information received will be kept confidential.

CHICKASHA - Caddo County and city law enforcement continued their search Thursday near Gracemont for the body of a woman who disappeared from Chickasha nearly five years ago.

The rain delayed authorities during the morning, but by afternoon specially trained dogs resumed their search for the body of Barbara Ferree, 46, Chickasha police Capt. Gary Bray said.

The search in the wooded area southwest of Gracemont began when Gary Wayne Quisenberry, 43, was arrested for writing false checks, then confessed to killing Ferree in October 1991, Bray said.

"His conscience was bothering him, and he wanted to confess it and get it (her death) off his chest. That's what he said," Bray said.

Bray said Quisenberry has been a suspect since police were told foul play was involved in her disappearance. New information on the case prompted police to question him again when he was arrested in Caddo County.

Bray said Quisenberry told police in the interview that he and Ferree were drinking and doing drugs when they got into an argument. Quisenberry told Bray the argument then escalated, and he accidentally killed her, Bray said.

Quisenberry led authorities to the scene and has been helping in the search, Bray said.

The Caddo County Sheriff's Department and Chickasha police searched for three days last week and then brought in trained dogs from Kansas , Bray said. On Wednesday, they searched for about eight hours before dark.

Bray said it has been difficult to find Ferree's body because it has been so long since she died.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Grady County Crime Stoppers at (800) 696-6477 or the Caddo County Crime Stoppers at (800) 295-2583.

    Search Widens for Woman's Body

CHICKASHA - Police broadened their search for the body of a Chickasha woman who disappeared nearly five years ago when they received a second report that someone had confessed to killing her.

They served a search warrant on a Chickasha residence this week to look for evidence that Barbara Ferree might be buried there.

For weeks, police have been looking for Ferree's body in the rural Caddo County area outside Gracemont, where Gary Quisenberry said he buried her five years ago.

So far, they've turned up few clues, and Quisenberry has been charged with obstruction of justice for not telling them exactly where she is buried, police Capt. Gary Bray said.

Quisenberry, who has been a suspect in Ferree's disappearance all along, confessed to killing her after he was recently arrested on a complaint of writing a bogus check.

But another witness who came forward recently told Bray that she saw Quisenberry's sister, Belinda Sue "Susie" Lee, cutting up identification cards belonging to Ferree shortly after her disappearance, court records show. Lee then told the witness that she killed Ferree and buried her "right under their noses," records show.

The search warrant shows Bray was looking for weapons, Ferree's body, blood stains and chemicals used to destroy the odor of decomposing bodies when police searched the home shared by Lee, Quisenberry and others.

But Bray said they didn't find any evidence Ferree was buried there and planned to look in another area .

In the meantime, Lee was arrested on an unrelated complaint of concealing stolen property, which police found at her house during the search.

Bray said cases like Ferree's disappearance are frustrating because some leads are inaccurate, but must still be pursued.
