Social media push gives mum strength in search for son

    17th Oct 2016

THE efforts of complete strangers have given Beerwah mum Fiona Peel strength as she waits for news of her missing son's whereabouts.

Ben Makinson, 25, had been living at a constant care facility in Mountain Creek until he went missing on Wednesday last week.

Mrs Peel said her son had a condition affecting his thought process which required medication.

She said he had gone missing before but never for this long.

People's willingness to share he plea for help on social media has helped in the search.

A message she posted on Facebook has been shared more than 3,300 times since last Thursday, including by people interstate.

People have also left messages of support and possible tips.

"I'm extremely grateful," Mrs Makinson said.

"I'm constantly checking it for things that stand out.

"It is really lovely that complete strangers take the time to share in these times."

She said she had driven around the Mapleton area at the weekend distributing images of her son.

Police said Mr Makinson had previously spoken about travelling into bushland in the local area, including national parks and possibly those in the Eumundi area and the Mapleton State Forest.

"Your mind never stops racing because you are trying to think of everything and anything," Mrs Makinson said.

"It like (looking for) a needle in a haystack."

Mrs Peel said she had left messages on her son's phone but it appeared to be switched off.

"I just want him to let me know that he is safe," she said.

Mr Makinson is described as being Caucasian, with a slim build, about 177cm tall and with brown hair, brown eyes and a beard.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

There's quite a distance between Mountain Creek, Eumundi and Mapleton State Forest.

Ben doesn't own a car, travels by foot, public transport or possibly his skateboard.

Plenty of public transport in those areas, mainly buses, although there is the main train line, runs parallel, in parts, with a major, north/south, Bruce Highway.

I imagine police will be checking CCTV from all transport companies. If he's carrying his skateboard he shouldn't be too hard to spot.

On the map I've ringed Eumundi in north, Mapleton, west, Mountain Creek, east....which is the area Ben is missing from. Bruce Highway runs right up the centre....
