SC BRANDY HANNA: Missing from Charleston, SC - 20 May 2005 - Age 32

Brandy Hanna is missing from Charleston, South Carolina since May 20, 2005.

Brandy got a ride home from work from an acquaintance on May 20, 2005 around 3:00 pm. At work that day, she had apparently taken a phone call from someone and appeared upset afterward. She told a customer she was scared of someone, but would not say who.

Brandy spoke to her mother at 5:50 pm and sent text messages to others at 8:00 pm and 10:19 pm. A friend arrived at her apartment for a pre-arranged shopping trip at 10:30 pm. Brandy did not answer the door so her friend assumed she was asleep and left. Later that night, Brandy's mother called back but Brandy's phone was off and remained off all weekend. She checked her apartment but it was vacant. All of her belongings except her cell phone were left behind.

Police initially refused to take a missing persons report and did not begin investigating until May 27. Two of her ex-boyfriends have accused each other in her disappearance but there is no evidence. Brandy remains missing.

Whenever I'm afraid of someone, I make sure I give loved ones a good description of the person and why. Too many cases where I've heard of the missing not leaving more details before they disappear. :(

No, they were not checked until six years later! The initial investigation was very poor. I just got done watching the Disappeared show.

She had just left a relationship with a man named Ray McAdams. She moved in with another guy named Zeke Langford. Zeke and Ray were friends and he actually lived with her and Ray for a while. He had just left his wife. But just before she went missing, he had moved out and she was living alone.

A neighbor witnessed her getting into a red truck with a white stripe with a Jason mask on the front. You know Jason from the horror films? She later identified Ray, but years after that identified Zeke. They both look kind of alike. Ray has since died. He died of a sudden heart attack. Zeke seems pretty distraught over her disappearance and has actually attended some vigils and has been very nice to her mom. So her mom doesn't think that he is involved.

Both Ray and Zeke drove the same kind of trucks because both of them worked for the same plumbing company! Zeke has an alibi that he was at work. Ray had an alibi that he was at a bar called the Plex, but another witness stated that he was actually home at 9:30 p.m. when she dropped something off at his house.

Years later, a kind law enforcement officer named Sergeant Ron Lacher decided to take the case and Brandy's mom is so grateful! I tell you what, watching the shows with the family members on them just breaks my heart every time. Anyway, he went to an abandoned navy base very close by to her apartment where he said a body would have easily been hidden. The tides go up and down so he went to an area where a body would have washed down under up here. He found a tennis shoe that has been identified by her family. There are alligators in the area so her body may never be found.

Another chilling thing about Ray McAdams is that Brandy once told someone that she was kind of afraid of him. But what's worse, is he once said to Brandy's mom that he could easily kill her daughter and get away with it. Her mom said that was a really strange thing to be saying to his girlfriend's mom, but he didn't seem to think it was a big deal to say something like that. It kind of tells us what his character was like, but he isn't alive to defend himself so I don't know?

New lead gives detective more insight into Brandy Hanna’s disappearance just before TV show is set to air

The disappearance of Brandy Hanna has stymied police investigators for more than a decade, but Sgt. Ron Lacher may finally have the lead to solve the mystery.

Hannavanished without a trace 11 years ago from her North Charleston apartment. The only real break in the case came in 2009 when police found a shoe believed to have been worn by Hanna — until nearly three weeks ago.

Lacher, a North Charleston detective with the vice unit, took over the case five years ago and is doing all he can to get answers. The recent lead came from a woman who provided “good information” about what happened and a suspect the department had already developed.

“I thought, ‘let me reach out to this girl and just see, because she knew these people,’ and she dropped this bombshell on me,” Lacher said. “She’s been holding this information for 10 years.”

    <snip>

Hanna disappeared May 20, 2005, from her Florida Avenue apartment, which is between Rivers and Spruill avenues. She worked an early shift at Alex’s Restaurant on Dorchester Road that day and caught a ride home.

But shortly after talking to her mother by phone that evening, Hanna vanished. She left behind her money, her clothes or any hint of what happened. Police questioned her boyfriend at the time, Zeke Lankford, as well as a former boyfriend, Ray McAdams. Both men passed polygraph tests. McAdams has since died.

Lacher said the suspect in Hanna’s case is still living but declined to give an identity. He said a lot of people assumed McAdams killed Hanna, which was another hurdle investigators had to overcome.

“It’s very easy to point a finger at a dead man, and so that’s been a thorn in the case, too,” he said.

The case languished for years before the white Nike tennis shoe with a light blue stripe in Hanna’s size was found under a pier near Riverfront Park, just blocks from her apartment. Lacher said the shoe was tested but didn’t have any DNA on it.

Convinced that the shoe belonged Hanna, Lacher said the police department in November brought in three of the best cadaver dog teams available from other states to search along the Cooper River near where it was found. They locked in on a spot inaccessible to the public where the old Charleston Naval Station golf course used to be.

The department began digging there in the pluff mud in November, sifting through the rich soil that Lacher said would preserve bone well. He added that sifting through a small area of the mud can take hours because of the texture, but it usually only takes digging about a foot and a half deep before they reach untouched soil.
