Teenagers Charged After Vandals Spoil a Dying Boy’s Early Christmas
The inflatable Santas were put up months before Christmas so a toddler with brain cancer could enjoy the holiday spirit. But for the past week, the outdoor decorations in a Cincinnati-area neighborhood have been mysteriously slashed, damaged and vandalized, the police said.

Residents started waiting up at night, keeping an eye out more during the day, and sharing messages on social media.

Then came a break in the case. The police said two boys, 16 and 17, were arrested and charged on Thursday with criminal damaging of an inflatable Santa on one property in the Colerain Township neighborhood.

“This was a mini-spree of criminal damaging,” Chief Mark C. Denney of the Colerain police department said in an interview. “It put a negative spin on everything going on in that neighborhood.”

Man confesses to 2014 fatal stabbing of jogger in Connecticut, report says

A man reportedly walked into a Connecticut police department Thursday and confessed to stabbing a mother of two and respected businesswoman to death while she was jogging in 2014 — a case that has stumped investigators until now.

Melissa Millan, 54, was jogging on a popular trail in Simsbury on Nov. 20, 2014, when she was stabbed in the chest, police said. For four years, authorities worked to identify a suspect in the killing, but had no leads until last week.

DNA match solves another cold case

30 years later, man admits to raping and killing Georgia mother and girl

Two doors down from Ronald Lee Kyles in Marietta lived Sharon Brady(40) and her daughter, Samantha(13).

Until he raped and stabbed them to death in 1986.

Police couldn’t prove what had happened until 2015 when DNA evidence linked Kyles to the crimes. A 2014 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice paid for testing of forensic evidence in the case.

In November 2015, Kyles — who was imprisoned in Pennsylvania on an unrelated aggravated assault conviction — was served with an arrest warrant charging him in the Brady case.

On Friday (10-5-2018), prosecutors said, the 63-year-old man was sentenced to two life sentences after pleading guilty during a court hearing about a week before his trial was to begin.

Sharon Brady’s 3-year-old daughter, Brandi, was also found in the apartment but was unharmed.
“As a mere 3-year-old, I came face to face with pure evil,” she said in court Friday.

Kyles will start his life sentence after finishing his time on the unrelated charge in Pennsylvania.

Police: 11 infant bodies found in ceiling of former funeral home
    Bill Laitner

The badly decomposed bodies of 11 infants were found in the ceiling of a former funeral home on Detroit's east side, Detroit police said.

The remains were found late Friday afternoon by state investigators just hours after they received an anonymous letter explaining how to find the bodies carefully hidden inside the false ceiling, Detroit police said.

The bodies had been hidden inside the former Cantrell Funeral Home at 10400 Mack Avenue at Garland, about 10 blocks east of the Indian Village neighborhood. The funeral home was closed by state authorities in April after they found numerous violations of state law....

mass shooting tonight at a place we shop & dine

2 victims dead, 5 wounded after gunman opens fire, kills himself at Tallahassee yoga studio

A Friday evening of unwinding, dinner and cocktails at an upscale Midtown shopping enclave was shattered by an unidentified assailant who walked into a yoga studio and began shooting.

Two people were fatally wounded before he turned the gun on himself. At least four others were shot and one was pistol-whipped, Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo said

City spokeswoman Alison Faris confirmed the shooter at Hot Yoga Tallahassee died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the incident at the yoga studio located on the second floor the Betton Place shopping complex on the corner of Thomasville and Bradford roads.

The gunman has been tentatively identified but his name has not been released.

"The main focus for us is positively identifying the suspect and what his link to our victims is," DeLeo said at a 10 p.m. briefing.
The 911 call came in at 5:37 p.m. DeLeo said officers arrived within three minutes to find the gunman dead. By 10 p.m., at least 40 witnesses had been interviewed.

Kristin Jacobs represents the Broward County community of Parkland in the Legislature, which nine months ago saw a shooter kill 17 students and school employees at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High. She was at the Bar at Betton at an office party when the gunfire erupted and a stream of people started running in from the nearby yoga studio. She recounted how the man who was pistol-whipped said he rushed the shooter, and and then the man turned the gun on himself. DeLeo said there is evidence that victims and others at the yoga studio fought back. “Many people are alive because this guy rushed the shooter,” Jacobs said. "I am alive because one guy in a yoga class in his bare feet ran at a shooter. He didn’t run away."

Megan Nixon was eating downstairs at Riccardo’s Restaurant when she heard the commotion at the yoga studio upstairs.“We heard pop, pop, pop. It sounded intense,” Nixon said. About 30 seconds later, she saw two young women run into Bar at Betton next door. Then, she saw a guy, bloodied, run in. “The gun shot six or seven times. I saw five different ambulances picking people up," Nixon said the owner of the restaurant locked the door to protect those inside. She struggled to understand the events that interrupted what was supposed to be a family evening out.

Shanta Combs was sitting at the Bar on Betton having drinks with her boyfriend and a friend when the chaos erupted.“It’s a little surreal still," she said. “It’s still hard to wrap your brain around, you know?” Everything happened so quickly, Combs said. First, the girl ran in breathing heavily, like she is in labor. Then someone yelled, "'Oh my god he’s bleeding.' I am right at the end of the bar and see this kid in a white t-shirt with blood coming out of his forehead.” Almost simultaneously she said a bartender yelled, "'Active shooter. Active shooter. Get down. Get away from the window!'" Then everyone gots off their stools and scrambled on their knees back to the kitchen area. Combs hugged the first girl who came into the bar. “It was so chaotic,” Combs said.

Police gathered eyewitnesses in the courtyard, sent the injured off in ambulances and others to another location. Police dogs outside were looking for shell casings, forensic teams came in. Time became irrelevant, Combs said. We stayed inside and commiserated,” she said. “There was a lot of hugging, a lot of crying, a lot of thank yous, and holy shits among total strangers tonight. You don’t witness something like that.”

About three hours after the shooting, two yoga instructors stood across the street behind the police tape watching lights flash outside of their studio. Tears poured down their faces. They were not ready to talk.

Judge dismisses charges in historic female genital mutilation case

A federal judge ruled Tuesday to dismiss charges against a Michigan doctor accused of subjecting nine minor girls to female genital mutilation procedures.

U.S. District Judge Bernard Friedman ruled that "as despicable as this practice may be," Congress overstepped its bounds by passing a 22-year-old federal law criminalizing female genital mutilation.

"As laudable as the prohibition of a particular type of abuse of girls may be ... federalism concerns deprive Congress of the power to enact this statute," Friedman wrote in his ruling.

He ruled the federal law is unconstitutional as the practice of female genital mutilation is a "local criminal activity" to be regulated by the states.

Man arrested after anti-Semitic rant on plane, reportedly saying 'all Jews raise their hands'
    Cydney Henderson

A Delta flight on the eve of Thanksgiving was interrupted by a racist rant 30,000 feet in the air.

Atlanta police told USA TODAY that passenger David Toaff, 37, shouted remarks that fellow travelers interpreted as anti-Semitic during a flight from Washington, D.C., to Atlanta on Wednesday.

"Preliminary information indicates that while in flight … a male was yelling, asking Jewish people on board to identify themselves and making remarks about bombings to passengers aboard the aircraft," Officer Lisa Bender said.

Authorities were waiting for Toaff at the gate once the plane landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Wednesday night. "Local law enforcement met flight 1822 (DCA-ATL) in Atlanta due to a customer’s behavior onboard the flight," Delta Air Lines spokesperson Adrian Gee confirmed in a statement to USA TODAY....

By Joe Sutton and Madeline Holcombe, CNN

A Thanksgiving night shooting at a mall in Alabama left two people injured and a gunman dead, authorities said Thursday.

The incident at the Riverchase Galleria in Hoover started with a physical altercation between an 18-year-old and the 21-year-old gunman, police said. The confrontation occurred in the mall, near Footaction and JC Penney stores.

Police do not know how the confrontation began, but "we do not believe at this point the 18-year-old was armed," Hoover police Capt. Gregg Rector said....

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4 News) - A John Doe murder case is no longer a mystery for authorities.

But the identity of the man behind the February 9th murders still remains a secret.

The cold case involves two murders on the same date, two years apart. It started a murder in Taylorsville. Sonia Mejia was found dead in her apartment on February 9, 2006. Two years later in West Valley, Damiana Castillo was found dead in her apartment. It happened on February 9, 2008.

Police eventually claimed the murders were connected. But the case went cold and the killer was never found.

Police did find DNA evidence at the scene and in 2010 murder charges are filed against a John Doe. Police back then said the forensic evidence came from one man.

But eight years after the John Doe murder charges were filed, the Salt Lake district attorney said they now know who the alleged killer is.

“We have identified this person but this person is not in our jurisdiction,” said Sim Gill, the district attorney.

Gill said the person is serving jail time outside of Utah. But he said the suspect is unaware he's wanted for murder in Utah.

For now, his identity remains a secret. Gill said he is concerned if this man accidentally is released from jail he could flee if he has learned what facing him in Utah.

Alabama mall shooting suspect arrested after police kill wrong man
    By
    Danielle Haynes

....Bradford's death sparked protests over the officers' alleged excessive use of force, with family members saying the man had a license to carry the gun he held.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Brown would be extradited to the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham and will likely be held on $150,000 bond.

The guy the cop shot was the son of a cop. His father told a news group that if his son had been asked to drop his weapon he would. Trevor Noah did a really impassioned commentary on how the only guy who can stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Unless he's black.

'I feel the FBI and every other law enforcement agency underestimated me': Mother who kidnapped her daughter from South Carolina and went on the run for 20 years speaks out
    • Dorothy Lee Barnett kidnapped her daughter in 1994 after obtaining forged birth certificates and getting passports
    • Barnett opened up to 48 Hours about her decision to take her daughter away
    • She and her husband Harris Todd had been locked in an ugly divorce and uglier custody battle
    • Todd was awarded custody of baby Savanna after painting a picture of Barnett as a violent and mentally unstable parent and wife
    • He told the court he would have his daughter evaluated by a psychiatrist at the age of three if she had any signs of a similar condition to her mother
    • Her mother said 'I knew as a grown woman ... if I couldn't prove that I wasn't mentally ill ... how could a two or three-year-old?'
    • She went on the run for the next two decades before she was arrested in 2013
A mother who kidnapped her own daughter in Charleston, South Carolina after a bitter custody battle and spent two decades on the run before she was finally arrested, is speaking out about her decision to flee.

In 1994 Dorothy Lee Barnett was fighting her husband Harris Todd in divorce court for custody of their daughter- then named Savanna. When the judge ultimately sided with Todd, a desperate Barnett came up with a wild plan to leave her home in the United States, and everyone she knew behind, and take her daughter with her.

'I feel the FBI and every other law enforcement agency underestimated me,' Dorothy Lee Barnett told 48 Hours.

While on the run, Barnett started a diary to Savanna who would be renamed Samantha explaining to her her beginnings.

'A few months before my mom gave birth to me, she started writing a diary. ... And -- it starts off on the first page saying, ''To my dear Savanna. Someday I'll give this journal to you so that you can hopefully understand your mother.''

'My name is Samantha Geldenhuys. I was born Savanna. But I didn't know that. Savanna Lee Barnett.

'I grew up on the Sunshine Coast ... in Australia. ...it is the most magnificent place.

Lee Barnett, who would change her name to Alexandra Geldenhuys, opened up to 48 Hours about
taking her daughter on the run for two decades until the law finally caught up with her

In happier times: Barnett married Harris Todd. He did not want children. Trouble in their marriage
    started when she became pregnant

Savanna Barnett would not learn the truth about her biological father or her own beginnings since
being kidnapped from the United States by Barnett in 1994, until her mother's arrest in
    Australia in 2013

'I knew my mom as Alex my entire life... But in reality she wasn't Alex at all.

'She was Lee ... Lee Barnett.

'She's written, 'I've always loved the name Savanna. It reminds me of great beauty... it also reminds me of my home and someday it will hopefully be yours too. The endless reeds, the shrimp, the blue herons...''

Things in Barnett's marriage to Todd started falling apart when she first learned she was pregnant with her daughter, less than a year into their marriage.

'I need to tell the truth about what's happened ... something needs to be changed,' Barnett told '48 Hours,' as she revealed her version of the events that led up to her taking her baby on the run.

When they first met, it started as a friendship. After five years however, the relationship had changed.

'He just professed to me that I'd made him feel different than anybody else has ever made him feel. And then one thing led to another,' said Barnett.

She was an outgoing explorer, he was an introvert. She wanted children, he did not.

'I thought I was a person that was going to help him have a more normal, fun-loving life, 'cause he was so serious,' she explained.

'When Lee ... decided to get married ... I did not agree with that choice,' her close friend Patty Roth said. 'Lee wanted children. ...Harris was very clear-- to everyone that he never wanted children.'

Barnett hoped she could change him.

'I don't know. I just thought that I was gonna do something and he would change. And we'd have this wonderful family ... and I just had this crazy dream that I'd make everything right,' Barnett said.

'He kept saying over and over throughout my whole pregnancy, ''There is no baby.'' Even when I was eight months pregnant. ''There is no baby. There is no baby,'' said Barnett.

'He wanted to hurt me so badly he didn't care who he took down, and that includes a little baby,' said Barnett.

Accused Catholic Supply shooter also suspect in Jefferson County attack

The man accused of sexually assaulting two women and fatally shooting a third at a Catholic Supply store in St. Louis County last month is now a suspect in an assault and home invasion in rural Jefferson County, a sheriff’s official said Thursday.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Capt. Gary Higginbotham said that a 77-year-old woman reported the Sept. 27 assault, but investigators had little to go on until the woman spotted Thomas Bruce’s picture in the media after he was charged.

Judge gives mom 40 years after 2 kids die in car. People 'take better care of their pets'

A Texas judge showed little sympathy during sentencing for a mom whose two daughters, ages 1 and 2, died after being left in an increasingly hot car overnight.

"Those precious little girls would still be here today if this had not happened," said Judge Keith Williams, according to Hill Country Breaking News. "People in our community take better care of their pets than you took care of your kids."

In September, Amanda Hawkins pleaded guilty to two felony counts of abandoning or endangering a child causing imminent danger of death, bodily injury or physical or mental impairment and two counts of injury to a child.

Rest easy in the arms of the angels Brynn & Addyson, justice has been served.
