Pa. woman vanishes: 'Something bad has happened'

The words of the mother of a missing western Pennsylvania woman are chilling: "I think something bad has happened to her. Her dog was found loose on the side of the road in Beatty and she would never be anywhere without the dog."

The missing woman is Cassandra Edlyn Gross, 51, of Latrobe, Pa., who was last heard from Saturday.

Gross's mother tells WPXI she thinks a man her daughter had dated may know more about the disappearance, claiming he stalked her and made constant threats:

"I know he did something to her," Kathie Gross said. "She wouldn't get a (protection from abuse order) because he said he had a hit list and he would kill her."

Vanished Pa. woman's burned-out car is found in park

The concern for a missing woman in western Pennsylvania is only increasing after her burned-out car was found abandoned in a park.

As WPXI reports, the charred vehicle belonging to Cassandra Edlyn Gross, 51, of Latrobe, Pa., was found late Tuesday by a railroad employee.

The Mitsubishi Outlander was discovered burned and abandoned in Twin Lakes Park, Westmoreland County.

Gross was officially reported missing Tuesday, and her mother last heard from her daughter on Saturday.

Person of interest identified in case of missing Latrobe woman Cassandra Gross

A man who, according to his lawyer, has been identified as a person of interest in the case of a missing Latrobe woman said Thursday that he does not know where she is.

Attorney David Shrager confirmed that Tom Stanko, 47, the boyfriend of Cassandra Gross, 51, is a person of interest in the case. No charges have been filed while the investigation continues.

Stanko was seen getting out of his car and walking to his attorney's office in downtown Pittsburgh for a meeting Thursday. Pittsburgh's Action News 4 reporter Marcie Cipriani asked, "Do you know where Cassandra is?" Stanko replied, "No, I do not."

Earlier in the day, Stanko was brought into a state police barracks to be interviewed, but he wanted to have a lawyer with him before he answered questions, Shrager said.

"That is his girlfriend. He wants to know where she is as well," Shrager said. "They had plans to do something. He kept texting her -- where are you, you know, we have plans. He's distraught. Imagine the person that you care about is missing, and people are asking questions about you. That's a double difficulty. He has nothing to hide. We are fully willing to cooperate and comply."

State police were seen outside Stanko's home in Latrobe on Thursday. Troopers with K-9s, a front loader and all-terrain vehicles were also seen searching at the home of Stanko's mother on a large amount of property in Latrobe.

Gross lives alone at Edgewater Village in Latrobe. Her mother, Kathie, said she last spoke to her daughter by phone around 3:30 p.m. Saturday. Police said the missing woman's vehicle was found "severely charred" in the woods near the Twin Lakes area of Hempfield Township on Tuesday.

"My daughter is dead. Something horrible happened," Kathie Gross said Wednesday.

She added, "Just one person knows: the person who did it."

As of Wednesday, police said the disappearance of Cassandra Gross was still considered to be a missing person case, as they did not have enough information to suspect a criminal act.

Police search property of missing Unity woman's 'boyfriend'

State troopers Thursday morning converged on a Unity property owned by a man who a Pittsburgh attorney identified as the boyfriend of a missing Unity woman.

The property where police were seen sifting through material in a burn barrel is owned by Thomas G. Stanko, according to Westmoreland County records.

No arrest has been made in the disappearance of Cassandra E. Gross, 51, police said.

Stanko denies any involvement in her disappearance, attorney David Shrager said Thursday afternoon.

“My client has nothing to hide and is anxiously” awaiting Gross' return, Shrager said.

On Tuesday, police found Gross' red 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander along railroad tracks in a wooded area near Twin Lakes Park in Hempfield, three days after her family and friends last spoke with her. The SUV had been burned almost beyond recognition. Investigators are pleading with Gross or anyone she may be with to contact them or Gross' family.

Troopers spent several hours at Stanko's home Thursday and left about 2:15 p.m.

Shrager said it is natural for police to consider someone close to a missing person as a “person of interest.”

Stanko and Gross last week had made plans to get together, Shrager said. When Gross didn't respond to Stanko's text messages, he got worried, Shrager said.

“We are happy to answer questions” from police, he said.

Gross was reported missing Monday by her mother, who last talked to her by phone Saturday afternoon. Her daughter didn't show up Monday at her job in Pittsburgh. Her dog, which is blind, was found along Beatty County Road, a few miles from her apartment and about five miles from Twin Lakes Park.

A Norfolk Southern railroad employee reported the burned vehicle to state police around 6 p.m. Tuesday after spotting it from a passing train along a rail line near the park. It took investigators until Wednesday morning to confirm it was Gross' vehicle because of the damage.

Police said it appears the SUV was taken to that spot and set on fire.

Investigators have not publicly called the case anything other than a missing person investigation. Gross' mother, Kathleen Gross, told the Tribune-Review that she doesn't believe her daughter ran away or committed suicide. She gave police the name of a man she said has been bothering Gross for a few months and said the two were not in a relationship.

Cassandra Gross lived alone at the apartment and often talked to her mother during her work commute.

Police are seeking information from anyone who may have seen Gross' SUV in the Twin Lakes area or any other unusual activity. The license plate is HLP 1411.

Divers, police search pond in probe of missing Unity woman

State police and a dive team on Friday searched at least one pond near a home owned by the mother of the purported boyfriend of a missing Unity woman.

Divers from Greensburg Fire Department are assisting state police in the search near Almira Stanko's home at the end of White Fence Lane in Unity, next to Unity Cemetery.

Is this the same Tom Stanko? The ages match.

Five family members visiting a loved one's grave in Unity Cemetery after nightfall were startled when a man carrying a 9 mm handgun suddenly appeared in their headlights, police said.

Thomas G. Stanko, 45, of Unity has been charged with making terroristic threats, criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and simple assault. State police went to the cemetery between 8:30 and 9 p.m. Sept. 14 when a family leaving in two cars after visiting a gravesite said they were threatened by a man who pointed a silver handgun at them, Trooper Robert Harr said in an affidavit of probable cause.

It sure looks like the same person. In one of the articles I read it stated his mother's property was next to the cemetery.

Police: 'Boyfriend' of missing Unity woman seen riding ATV stolen 20 years ago

An all-terrain vehicle reported stolen in approximately 1997 was found last week on the property of a Unity man who has been identified as a missing woman's “boyfriend.”

State police arrested Thomas G. Stanko, 47, Friday on a receiving stolen property charge . He remains jailed on $100,000 bond.

Details of those allegations were released Monday morning.

Troopers said in an affidavit that, during a Thursday search of property owned by Stanko on White Fence Lane, they located a 1988 Yamaha ATV that had been reported stolen in northern Pennsylvania. The ATV's owner confirmed to troopers last week that it was taken from his home about 20 years ago, according to court papers.

State police have trail camera photographs from a neighboring Unity property that show Stanko using the ATV on April 1.

Stanko has denied involvement in the disappearance of Cassandra E. Gross, 51. No arrests have been made.

Police have searched two Unity properties belonging to Stanko, as well as a pondand an area near Twin Lakes Park where Gross' vehicle was found Tuesday night. His mother lives at the White Fence Lane home.

Stanko's attorney David Shrager has said he hopes to address his client's bond on the receiving stolen property charge. An April 23 preliminary hearing is set.

Missing woman's boyfriend facing new charges

On Monday, Stanko was also charged with 28 counts of illegally having a gun.

“(Police) are alleging that there are stolen firearms at my client’s mother’s property that they are attempting to pin on my client. We’ll deal with it. None of these charges have anything to do with the disappearance of Ms. Gross," said David Shrager, Stanko's attorney.

Police continue to seek tips in the case.

Prosecutors aim to keep missing Unity woman's acquaintance jailed

Westmoreland County prosecutors on Wednesday filed court documents aimed at keeping the acquaintance of a missing Unity woman in jail.

Thomas George Stanko, 57, is in the county jail after being unable to post bail on unrelated charges filed against him in the last week.

Stanko has denied involvement in the disappearance of Cassandra E. Gross, 51, who has been missing since April 7. No arrests have been made, but police have searched two Unity properties belonging to Stanko, as well as a pond and an area near Twin Lakes Park.

Pittsburgh attorney David Shrager has identified Stanko as Gross' “boyfriend.” Her mother has told the Tribune-Review that she gave police the name of a man who had been bothering her daughter for the past few months. The pair were not in a relationship, the mother said. She declined to name the man.

Stanko is scheduled to appear Thursday morning before Mahady for an arraignment on the weapons charges.

Police are seeking information from anyone who may have seen Gross' SUV in the Twin Lakes area or any other unusual activity. The license plate is HLP-1411.

Anyone with information is asked to call state police in Greensburg at 724-832-3288 or 911.

Bail reduced for acquaintance of missing Unity woman

A judge on Monday reduced the bail for the acquaintance of a missing Unity woman from $100,000 to $5,000 on a charge of receiving stolen property.

In making the change, District Judge Michael Mahady said it was “moot” because a bail revocation in an unrelated assault case is holding Thomas G. Stanko, 47, of Unity at the Westmoreland County Prison.

“Whatever we make this bail doesn't make any difference,” Mahady said.

Family's $25K not enough to free Unity man jailed in missing woman case

Two bags stuffed with $25,000 in cash brought to the Westmoreland County Courthouse on Wednesday wasn't enough to free a man suspected in the case of a Unity woman missing for more than a month.

Stanko's mother, Almira, and a family friend, who declined to be identified, left the courthouse Wednesday without their money or Stanko's freedom.

“We have no comment,” the women said.

They posted two bonds totaling $25,000:

    • $20,000 for an assault case in which Stanko is accused of punching a man at a Youngstown bar in July 2017 and knocking out several of the man's false teeth.

    • $5,000 on the charge related to the ATV.

Payment of a third bond for $1,000 was rejected, but the money was placed in an escrow account to cover future court costs for Stanko. That bond is related to a January case in which Stanko allegedly failed to have an ignition interlock device in a vehicle he was driving.

State law prevented the Stankos from posting three separate bonds within 30 days, said Valerie Tantlinger, a clerk in the Clerk of Courts office. They were told to find a bail bondsman to post the last $1,000, Tantlinger said.

Clerks initially sent the women away with the bags of cash after they were $1,000 short of the amount needed to post bail in the separate cases. They returned about an hour later with three cashier's checks totaling $26,000.

Even if all three bonds had been posted, Stanko would not have been released from jail, according to Assistant District Attorney Jim Lazar. He continues to be held without bond pending a probation and parole revocation hearing scheduled for May 24 before Common Pleas Judge Christopher Feliciani.

Cassandra Gross' family, friends organizing search effort

A longtime friend of Cassandra Gross is spearheading a search for the missing Latrobe woman.

He says they have about 150 people willing to search but they want state police to support their effort.

In the days following her disappearance, state police scoured properties in Unity and Hempfield townships, using bloodhounds and cadaver dogs to try to find any trace of her, but Cassandra’s family wants to see more done to bring her home.

“They’re doing what they can but more needs to be done. The search parties, they can’t hurt anything, and if they have people search where police already did, so what?” Kathe Gross said. “It’s the people’s time and their legwork so it shouldn’t matter.”

State police say the investigators assigned to Cassandra’s missing persons case are eating, sleeping and breathing her disappearance.

Family friends are hoping to have support from the state police and the Bring Our Missing Home organization to get a search party out there in the next week.
