'Focus on finding her': Family, friends search for answers in the disappearance of Cassandra Gross

    Sunday, June 10, 2018, 1:41 a.m.

"When they found the dog, I knew something terrible had happened to her — because you don't separate her and the dog," Kathe said.

Cassandra Gross and her dog, Baxter.

"You know who did it, but you can't prove who did it," Kathe said. "You know she's dead, but you can't get to her. It's horrible; it's worse than any horror movie you've ever watched — just knowing she's laying out there somewhere by herself, and there's nothing I can do to go get her."

Police Shift Search For Missing Latrobe Woman To Cemetery

Police in Westmoreland County shifted their search for a missing woman to a Unity Township cemetery Monday morning.

Crews arrived early Monday morning to begin searching the grounds of Unity Cemetery near Stanko’s mother’s home off of White Fence Lane. Police and search teams have previously looked around the property surrounding Stanko’s mother’s home.

Search parties, including at least two cadaver dogs, covered a large area.

“We were at part of the cemetery and then the adjacent areas around it. And the reason why we were here so long is it’s very dense, the terrain we’re searching through. So that’s some of the areas. It’s hard to say a specific area, but that’s kind of the region we’ve been focusing our efforts at,” Trooper Steve Limani said.

The search wrapped up around 4 p.m., and there is no word on what, if anything, was discovered.

Diebold also urged anyone with information to contact state police.

Crews resumed the search in Unity Cemetery Friday for clues in the disappearance of Gross.

State police have not said what specifically led them to this area.

Family of Cassandra Gross still seeking answers

Armed with signs, T-shirts and bracelets, family and friends of Cassandra Gross lined a busy stretch of Route 30 in Latrobe Saturday.

Gross was reported missing April 9 and hasn't been heard from since April 7, police have said. Her car was found burned in a wooded area of Hempfield Township on April 10. No arrests have been made.

An ex-boyfriend, Thomas Stanko, has been considered a person of interest, according to the man's lawyer, but he has not been charged or accused of any wrongdoing.

Police searched Stanko's mother's property, which is down the road from Unity cemetery, not long after Gross was reported missing.

The family continues to offer a $10,000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest. The family is asking anyone with information to call 724-539-9553 or contact state police.

Missing woman Cassandra Gross' family asks judge to declare her legally dead

Cassandra Gross, missing since spring, still has not been found, but her family wants her to be legally declared dead.

A hearing is set for January to consider the request filed by Gross’ son, Brandon Diebold of North Carolina. Gross, who would have turned 52 in May, was last seen April 7.

If a Westmoreland County judge approves the motion, it would allow Diebold access to the funds in Gross’ credit union account and 401k. The Unity woman did not have a will.

Gross’ family believes she was killed. No arrests have been made.

Several reasons to establish her death were listed in the court filing, including:

    • Searches for her by state police have been unsuccessful.

    • Offering of a $10,000 reward for information leading to her whereabouts has been fruitless.

    • Her accounts have remained inactive since April 7.

    • Troopers have told her family that they “have a substantial amount of circumstantial evidence that she is deceased.”

State law says that a judge can be petitioned at any time for a legal declaration with a date of death after someone “is absent from his place of residence without being heard of after diligent inquiry.” A person who has not been heard from for seven years, and whose date of death may be in question, can be presumed dead under state law.

Estranged boyfriend of missing woman charged in connection with alleged forgery

Police have charged the estranged boyfriend of a Westmoreland County woman who went missing in April with conspiracy to commit forgery.

Thomas Stanko, who is currently incarcerated at the county prison on charges unrelated to the disappearance of Cassandra Gross, allegedly told his mother, Almira, to use his ACCESS card in order to take advantage of $1,200 in state food stamp funds, according to a criminal complaint.

He allegedly gave her the PIN to the card during a call from the jail, according to the complaint.

Almira Stanko, who is charged with forgery, allegedly went to the Giant Eagle in Ligonier on Oct. 30 to make a small purchase to see if the card worked, but was denied, according to the complaint.

Later that day, she talked to her son by phone and told her the plan hadn’t worked, according to the complaint.

The gun charges were dismissed at the State level. However, the case he is charged with now was reported to Project Safe Neighborhood. They work closely with the DOJ. So, when the State passed the ATF stepped up. His April arrest was due to a probation violation which is what is currently keeping him locked up.

Judge declares missing Unity woman Cassandra Gross legally dead

Cassandra Gross hasn’t used her credit card since April.

There have been no withdrawals in the last nine months from the Unity woman’s bank account other than automatic transactions. Her 401k account has remained untouched.

“There’s no doubt in your mind, sir, that your mother’s subject to peril?” Westmoreland County Common Pleas Court Judge Chris Scherer asked Gross’ son during a hearing Tuesday.

    “Unfortunately, no,” Brandon Diebold replied.

Scherer ruled that Gross is the victim of a homicide and declared her legally dead as of April 7. A death certificate can now be issued and her son has access to the assets left behind and other rights, such as resolving a car loan and insurance.

Nearly 1 year after mother's disappearance, family still holds out hope

In just a few days, it will be one full year since Cassandra Gross went missing from Latrobe.

After numerous searches, the Gross family remains determined to find her.

"Sometimes even during the day, I can hear her calling me. But I can’t find her," Cassandra Gross' mother, Kathie Gross, said.

Cassandra Gross was last seen in Latrobe on April 7, 2018.

Her blind, diabetic dog was found in the Beatty Crossroads area the same day Gross’ parents reported her missing.

After that, Cassandra Gross' burned car was spotted in a wooded area along train tracks near Twin Lakes Park.

Police have even searched properties owned by Thomas Stanko, Cassandra’s ex-boyfriend, who is in jail on unrelated charges.

He was never named a suspect in this case, but Kathie has always had her suspicions.

“I’d rather he be out because then I could know where my daughter was,” she said.

Kathie said she often gets tips on where Cassandra might be and that the family isn't giving up.

“I’ve done everything that I can think of, and I’ll do it as long as I can,” she said.

Investigators search 2 Westmoreland spots, 1 apparently for missing woman Cassandra Gross

Investigators convened at two places Thursday in Westmoreland County to search for missing women, including one who has not been seen in more than a year.

Neither search turned up a body.

Kathe and Harry Gross, the parents of missing Unity woman Cassandra Gross, waited along Beatty Flats Road while state police and a dog searched a wooded area. Kathe Gross said she was glad troopers were searching that location.

Troopers have been seen searching in the Unity Cemetery area and at two Unity properties owned by Thomas Stanko, 48.

Family and friends believe Stanko is responsible for Gross’ disappearance. He has maintained his innocence.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Family Of Missing Westmoreland County Woman Lead One Last Search

Family and friends of Cassandra Gross gathered at the Unity Cemetary to make one last search in a wooded area for her missing body.

The search would take them near the home of her estranged boyfriend, Thomas Stanko.

“She wants found and she wants buried with her brother and I’m going to find her,” said Kathe Gross, Cassandra’s mother.

Kathe Gross says police are still working hard and it’s just a matter of time before an arrest.

“They’re gathering all the evidence they have and getting it all together, dotting their Is an crossing their Ts and when that’s done, it’ll happen,” she said.

In the meantime, Kathe Gross says they’ll search other areas. She’ll never give up until her daughter is given a proper burial.

“I’ve been many places but I’ve been here so many times, so this will be the last one here, but then I’ll move on,” she said.

Warrants, other documents remain sealed in Cassandra Gross disappearance, judge rules

    Rich Cholodofsky| Monday, September 23, 2019 5:50 p.m.

A Westmoreland County judge has continued to keep private details of an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a Unity woman who police said was likely killed last year.

Common Pleas Court Judge Tim Krieger signed court orders on Sept. 19 that sealed for another 30 days search warrants and corresponding documentation obtained over the last year in connection with disappearance of Cassandra Gross.

The judge’s order said that in the interest of justice the search warrants will remain private as “it further appearing that the release of investigative details within could jeopardize an ongoing investigation ….”
