Convicted Murderers Escaped Prison -*Richard Matt is dead! David Sweat shot & captured!*

One was doing life for killing a sheriff's deputy on the Fourth of July. The other has a grislier past: He killed a 76-year-old businessman by breaking his neck, then cut up the body and threw the pieces into a river.

    Now they could be anywhere.

Law enforcement officers and police dogs fanned out Monday on the third day of a manhunt for David Sweat and Richard Matt, who busted out of an upstate New York prison in a daring escape worthy of "The Shawshank Redemption."

The New York State Police told NBC News they had received more than 300 tips.

"These are dangerous men capable of committing grave crimes again," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.

The witnesses spotted the men at about 12:30 a.m. near the manhole they reportedly escaped from after breaking out of the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora about 20 miles from the Canadian border.

When the witnesses confronted the men, one of them reportedly said: "We're just lost. We don't know where we are. We're on the wrong street." They then both took off running, the witnesses said.

The man added to ABC that he was "lucky to be alive."

The Latest on prison escape: Police converge on town 30 miles from prison

    1:45 p.m.

Many state and federal law enforcement officers are conducting a ground and aerial search in a rural area 30 miles southeast of the northern New York prison where two murderers escaped.

Willsboro Town Supervisor Shaun Gilliland says residents reported seeing a couple of men walking in the town Monday night during a driving rainstorm. He said the men headed off into farm fields and the residents called police, who reacted immediately.

Ahhhh, that explains how they got power tools. Per you CBS link, there were construction workers at the prison.

Just fyi, the one guy who shot a sheriff, he shot him 22 times. OMGosh! He shot him a whole bunch into his vest. When he saw he was alive, he got out of his vehicle and walked up to him and unloaded some more.

    good grief!

The manhunt for two prison escapees may have shifted south to Willsboro, New York.

Convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat escaped from the maximum security prison in Dannemora Saturday and have not been seen since. But today there is a large police presence in Willsboro, about 40 miles south and east of Dannemora.

Our Rose Spillman is in Willsboro, where she reports there are a number of law enforcement officers on Middle Road. Police there say they are looking for two suspicious subjects, and they won't confirm if those subjects are in fact the escaped inmates, Matt and Sweat.

A manhunt has been underway in the town of Dannemora where the prisoners escaped this weekend. Police have asked the public to call 911 with any tips of suspicious activity.

Tuesday, the sheriff's department, state troopers, and a bus full of law enforcement officers started searching in Willsboro after a call of suspicious subjects.

Neighbors say police aren't saying anything, and they are on edge watching so much activity nearby.

"Correction officers and state troopers and everything. Like I said, I just hope they get it over with real quick," said Otis Gay of Willsboro.

Officials are offering a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of both Matt and Sweat. This is day 4 of the search for the escapees.

'Shawshank' escapees 'cornered' in tiny New York town after they were allegedly forced to flee on foot when their getaway driver didn't show'

Schools in the rural community surrounding Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border, implemented high security as the men remained on the loose.

Their escape drew comparisons to the movies Shawshank Redemption, set at a rural prison, and Escape from Alcatraz because they used decoys to trick guards making overnight bed checks

EXCLUSIVE: Accomplice of 'Shawshank' escapee Richard Matt, who was released from prison last summer, is living in fear as his graphic testimony helped convict deranged killer and sentence him to life

Convicted murderer Lee Bates is now living in fear of his own life after the deranged killer he helped send to prison for life is on the run following the 'Shawshank Redemption' escape from a maximum-security prison.

Bates, 38, turned state's evidence against Richard Matt in 2008, telling a court of a 27-hour ride of terror as Matt searched for the perfect place to kill and dismember his former boss. Bates had been sentenced to 15 years to life a decade earlier and was released last August.

But now, as the manhunt for Matt and his fellow escapee David Sweat has spread to three countries with authorities admitting they have no idea where the men are, Bates is wondering if he did the right thing.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has put a $100,000 bounty on the heads of the two escaped men, who left a smiley-face note saying 'Have a Nice Day.'

Hunt for Escaped New York Prisoners Centers on Willsboro

The police flooded the town to check on a report called in to police late Monday night from a driver who saw two men walking in the rain on a country road, according to Shaun Gillilland, the town supervisor of Willsboro.

“A report was called in by a citizen of two suspicious men walking down a very rural road in the southern part of our town in the middle of a driving rain storm,” Mr. Gillilland said. “When the car this person was in approached, they took off into the fields.”

CNN)Authorities scoured farms and fields around an upstate New York town on Tuesday, looking for a pair of convicted murderers who escaped from a prison days earlier, a local official said.

The search was prompted by a citizen who spotted two "suspicious men" walking down a road in Willsboro in the middle of a "driving rainstorm" overnight "in an area that's all ... large farms and fields and wooded lots," Town Supervisor Shaun Gillilland said. As the citizen's car approached them, they took off.

"They were walking down the road, not dressed for the elements," Gillilland said. "They ran into the fields, from what I understand. So this behavior ... was suspicious."

I have not slept right since this escape and I probably won't until they are caught. I am a couple of hours from the prison but still to close to be nonchalant. These are two very dangerous men and I live out in the country.

Escaped killers' driver went to hospital instead, source says

(CNN)Investigators think a woman who worked with Richard Matt and David Sweat at the Clinton Correctional Facility planned to pick the convicted killers up after they escaped but changed her mind at the last minute, a source familiar with the investigation tells CNN.

Joyce Mitchell went to a hospital this weekend because of panic attacks, the source said.

Mitchell is one of several prison employees who has been questioned in the case. She has given a statement and is being "somewhat cooperative," a source said. She has not been charged.

Her cell phone was used to call several people connected to Matt, another source with knowledge of the investigation told CNN. It's unclear who made the calls or when the calls were made. Authorities are trying to determine whether Mitchell was aware her phone was being used.

Her son, Tobey Mitchell, has come to her defense.

He told NBC that she wouldn't "risk her life or other people's lives to help these guys escape." He said his mother was in a hospital with severe chest pains about the time of the escape.
