5/26/2016 34-year-old Sigfredo Garcia has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the 2014 killing of Florida State University law professor Dan Markel. As TPD officials explained at their press conference this morning, a probable cause affidavit for Garcia got approved last night, and authorities arrested him in Broward County, just north of Miami, at 9:11 p.m. yesterday. He is being held in custody pending extradition to Leon County, where Tallahassee is located.

Sources close to the investigation say Markel was killed in a murder-for-hire plot and that more arrests are expected.

Legal community stunned at murder of top law professor
Top legal scholars are in mourning and Florida police are puzzled over the murder of an internationally respected and Harvard-trained law professor, who was shot in his home in an upscale Tallahassee neighborhood.

Dan Markel, 41, a Florida State University law professor who made a name for himself with a new theory of retributive justice for liberal democracies and a blog popular in legal academic circles, was shot in his home Friday and died the next day in a local hospital. There were no signs of burglary or robbery, and police have no suspects so far, according to Tallahassee Police Department

"The initial investigation has provided no indication that this case is connected to a burglary or robbery and investigators are assuring residents there is no evidence this was a random act. Neighbourhood residents should continue to be vigilant but it appears at this time that Mr. Markel was the intended victim in this incident."

Dan Markel died from gunshot wound to the head

Police looking to identify car in Markel case

    July 17, 2015
Tallahassee Police on Friday released a photograph of a 2006-2009 Toyota Prius seen driving from the area. Authorities say the car appears metallic to light green and its windows are tinted.

    JUL 17, 2015
TPD now has more information about a car earlier identified as a silver Prius. Toyota lists the color as Silver Pine Green.

On Friday, police narrowed that vehicle description. They are seeking a suspect Prius from the years 2006 to 2009, with a "silver pine mica" paint color that appears metallic to light green,. . .

After a year, still few clues in Dan Markel killing
Surveillance photos show the 2006-2009 model, painted "Silver Pine Mica," . . .

Dan had been involved in a contemptuous divorce with his ex, also an FSU professor & author. Both had apparently moved on but there were still issues about custody & other settlements. They had 2 young boys.

Mystery remains after arrest in killing of Florida professor

Top police officials in Tallahassee are releasing scant details about how they linked Garcia, who lists a Miami Beach address, to the slaying or whether others are involved. They also got a judge to seal records related to the case. Hallandale Beach police arrested Garcia at a gas station.

Tallahassee Police Chief Micheal DeLeo said the case was still active and that they made the request to keep the records private "in order not to jeopardize this ongoing investigation." DeLeo and other Tallahassee police officials refused to answer any questions about whether other arrests are coming or what led them to Garcia.

The 41-year-old Markel, who was born in Toronto, was well known in national and international legal circles. The father of two boys and a 2001 graduate of Harvard Law School, he practiced white-collar criminal defense and civil litigation before joining the Florida State law school faculty in 2005. He was tenured in 2010.

Markel finalized a contentious divorce from his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, in 2013. The two had split custody of sons Benjamin and Lincoln, but they had follow-up litigation over money settlements. Adelson, who is also a lawyer, had worked at FSU but moved to Miami Beach about a year and a half ago.

Police initially had few leads in the case and eventually circulated pictures of the car believed to have been used by those involved in the killing.

State arrest records show Garcia has multiple arrests dating back to 1997. Charges included car theft, cocaine possession, burglary, threatening a witness and a strongarm robbery charge in 2012. Those records show that other charges were filed against him — including possession of an explosive device — but that the charges were dropped.

His occupation is listed on his arrest records as a heavy machine operator.

Suspect charged in 2014 slaying of FSU professor
Tallahassee police remained tight-lipped Thursday about the arrest of 34-year-old Sigfredo Garcia, who has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Dan Markel nearly two years ago........
"This case is ongoing and continuing," Northway said. "So if we were to release all of the details of the case, that would jeopardize our case that we are continuing to work."

George Dekle, a former assistant prosecutor and University of Florida law professor, said the arrest affidavit was likely sealed because the investigation has not yet been completed.

He also theorized that others connected to the crime may be tipped off if facts of the case were to be released.

“If there are other people out there,” Dekle said, “the investigation may be compromised.”

Trying to bring interested readers up to speed. I apologise for repetition in some of these links. I have friends in Markel's neighborhood & have followed this murder since it happened. I suspect arrests of people very close to him will be happening soon.

It appears his ex-wife hasn't been informed there's more arrests imminent. LE believes this was a murder for hire.
What could this professor have possibly done to warrant a hired assassin?

    Markel's ex-wife lauds investigators, arrest

The ex-wife of slain Florida State University law professor Dan Markel said an arrest in the case this week offers some closure for her and their children.

“These past two years have been an extraordinarily difficult time for our family,” said Wendi Adelson in an email to the Democrat. “Although my children will always live with the tremendous loss of their father, my hope is that these new developments will finally bring some closure.”

noZ anxiously awaits more arrests! ASA in Stuart said yesterday he had to make a deal with the devil. In this case, Willie Meggs in N FL, may have to make a deal with Garcia to get to the devil.

Wendi Adelson made a name for herself in academia but had ambitions beyond FSU. This article was published in April before her husband was shot in July.

".......... I screwed up fantastically and ended up with a dream job as a clinical law professor. I fell in love with the wrong man, and he got a job in Tallahassee. I had wanted to be in DC or become a foreign service officer, or in the previous few years, live closely to my family in South Florida. So, ill-fated romance took me to Tallahassee, and love for my children keeps me here. My children are 3 and 4, fourteen months apart. Much of the last 4 years has been a giant blur....."

    For purposes of more background:

this 11/2015 piece seems well -researched.

another article but DM has a good photo of the house from the street.

Clearly this was an ambush killing. To add even more horror, there was a 911 mix-up & this was not assigned as a priority call. Somewhere upthread is a link to the conversation between 911 & the neighbor who repeatedly says Markel is alive & moving & why has the ambulance not there yet. Sadly Markel's home is less than 1 miles from the biggest hospital & trauma center. If EMTs had arrived sooner, could he have survived?

Cold. Self-centered. Self promoting - WA did nothing to endear herself to me in this podcast - a writing workshop. She talks about the murder, but she is the star of every story. Where is the respect & empathy for her "latex husband" & young fatherless children? It's all about herself. Was it necessary to slam Markel for his non-interest in her book because it's fiction & incidentally, thecharacter based on herself is the heroine of the story.

A talk WA did in Palm Beach about her novel. She has some expertise in human trafficking. Again, self-promotion outshines the story. My opinion only - her book was chosen to be read by all incoming freshmen at FSU so must have some merit..... my take from all of this is there was a loveless marriage & a lot of professional competition between the couple -at least on her part. WA readily admits to choosing Dan Markel as a mate because he was intelligent & headed for success which she thought would compliment her own career & make him a good father. ( I was not prepared to hear her put down her recently murdered "latex husband."

    and the plot thickens.......

Police connect suspect in murder of FSU professor to ex-wife's family

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) -- Police have implicated a second suspect, and connected the family of Dan Markel's ex-wife to a 2014 murder plot of the FSU law professor, according to court documents.

Sigfredo Garcia, 34, was arrested last week in Hallandale Beach, Florida and charged in connection with Markel's murder.

Markel was found suffering a gunshot wound to the head at his Trescott Drive home in July of 2014. He later died at a local hospital

According to recently released court documents, police say the motive for the murder stemmed from the desire of the family of Markel's ex-wife to relocate her and their children to South Florida.

Markel had been in a lengthy legal battle with his ex-wife Wendi Adelson over her relocation with their children to South Florida.

He had asked the court for his ex-mother-in-law to be prohibited form having unsupervised visitation with his children after claiming that she made disparaging remarks about him to his sons.

TPD says there was a pending court hearing that may have impacted the grandparents' access to their grandchildren.

Police have accused Garcia and another man, Luis Rivera, of Murder.
