Clare Bronfman, Seagram's liquor heiress, arrested in sex trafficking case
Clare Bronfman, an heiress to the Seagram's liquor fortune, was arrested Tuesday morning on charges she participated in a widespread criminal conspiracy as part of her involvement a cult-like group whose leader has been charged with sex trafficking.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for New York's Eastern District confirmed Bronfman had been arrested earlier Tuesday and will face arraignment in Brooklyn federal court in the afternoon with the group known as NXIVM.

Its the same group that attracted attention when actress Allison Mack was charged with sex trafficking for her involvement in April. She allegedly participated in DOS, a subset of NXIVM, according to prosecutors.

Mack was best known for her role as Chloe Sullivan on the CW's Smallville.

Three other people — including NXIVM co-founder Nancy Salzman and her daughter, Lauren — were arrested in the Albany area in connection with the NXIVM case on Tuesday, according to Tyler Daniels, a spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Bronfman, the Salzmans and Kathy Russell will be arraigned on racketeering conspiracy charges Tuesday afternoon. Lauren Salzman will also face two other conspiracy charges.

Bronfman, who lives in the Albany area, is a longtime bankroller of NXIVM, which was founded by Salzman and Keith Raniere in the late 1990s.

I saw woman talking about this. She left before the doo-doo hit the oscillating air moving device and she said the branding process took 45 minutes. She was told it would be a tattoo.

Heiress Behind NXIVM Sex Cult Unmasked in Court: ‘Let Her Watch Netflix’

The other shoe has finally dropped for Clare Bronfman, the heiress behind the alleged cult leader. Bronfman, who’s an heiress to the Seagram’s liquor fortune, was long ago outed as a major bankroller of Keith Raniere, the empowerment guru turned master manipulator who’s been charged with sex trafficking conspiracy, sex trafficking, and conspiracy to commit forced labor.

On Tuesday, Clare Bronfman was taken into custody in New York City. A superseding indictment charged Bronfman alongside several other top NXIVM members: Kathy Russell, Lauren Salzman and Nancy Salzman. The six defendants stand accused of running an organized criminal enterprise.

Crimes alleged within the indictment include identity theft, harboring of aliens for financial gain, extortion, forced labor, sex trafficking, money laundering, wire fraud and obstruction of justice. It describes Bronfman as “a member of the Enterprise and a high-ranking member of Nxivm” who served as an executive board member from approximately 2009 to 2018.

The indictment describes the “principal purpose” of the Enterprise as obtaining financial and personal benefits for the members “by promoting the defendant Keith Raniere, also known as ‘Vanguard,’ and by recruiting new members into the Pyramid Organizations.”

It further accuses the defendants of “promoting, enhancing, and protecting the Enterprise by committing, attempting and conspiring to commit crimes…demanding absolute commitment to Raniere, including by exalting Raniere’s teachings and ideology, and not tolerating dissent,” as well as “recruiting and grooming sexual partners for Raniere” and “using harassment, coercion and abusive litigation to intimidate and attack perceived enemies and critics of Raniere.”

Allison Mack's Co-Defendant Calls Group 'Humanitarian Organization,' Wants Sex Crimes Charges Dropped

A motion from Nxivm founder Keith Raniere’s attorneys describes Nxivm — which at least one former member has described as a “cult” — as a “wonderful humanitarian organization” that is “dedicated to achieving peace on a global scale.”

The filing adds: “If there was a polar-opposite of an organized crime family, Nxivm would be it.” The motion further claims that “Nxivm members have sought to end the violence in Mexico, have introduced tools useful to people with difficult conditions, such as Tourette’s syndrome, have pioneered multi-linguistic schools for young children, who would become proficient in multiple languages and later multi-cultural adults, and have developed approaches to help people lead happier, more productive, more enriched lives.”

Allison Mack Uses the Church of Scientology as Part of Her Defense in NXIVM Case

Allison Mack's legal team used the Church of Scientology as part of its defense in her sex trafficking case.

"The government argues that Ms. Mack obtained forced labor through 'threats of serious harm,' with serious harm being the embarrassment that would result from the exposure of one's collateral," the court document said. "Courts have found, however, that such an outcome, albeit embarrassing, does not amount to serious harm under the statute."

Here's where Scientology comes in. In the Headley v. Church of Scientology Int'l case, "the court did not find that plaintiffs were compelled to remain in the organization even though, if they chose to leave, they would be 'excommunicated' from their friends and family and labeled a 'dissenter.'"

Her attorneys added, "The threat of reputational damage and isolation from loved ones therefore did not qualify as serious harm."
