Missing teen's Bronco found burned and abandoned, no sign of him

    ANONYMOUS TIP LINE: 907-290-8999

Edith Grunwald describes her son, David, as a once serious kindergartner and an even more serious 16 year-old. So when he wasn't home at an agreed upon time of 9:20 Sunday night, she started to worry. David stopped texting and didn't pick up his cell phone calls. By 11:30 that night, she decided to call Alaska State Troopers to report him missing.

Troopers reported David's Ford Bronco was found on Monday on the isolated, bumpy, icy road on North Solitude in Wasilla.

Friends and family yearn for clues in search for missing Mat-Su teen

Five days after dropping off his girlfriend in Butte, Palmer teen David Grunwald remains missing.

The increasingly baffling disappearance has galvanized a volunteer search effort.

Alaska State Troopers said on Tuesday they had found Grunwald's Ford Bronco torched and ditched up a rough trail on Bald Mountain Ridge, a popular four-wheeling area locally known as Baldy, in the Talkeetna Mountains north of Wasilla.

But no other indications popped up after that, leaving his friends and family desperate for information.

He dropped off his girlfriend, Victoria Mokelke, at her father's house off Smith Road in Butte at about 6:30 or 7 p.m. Sunday, said his mother, Edie Grunwald. He said something about maybe stopping by a friend's house, but it was unlikely he went anywhere for long because he was wearing slippers. The friend said he never saw David.

Grunwald never returned home to the family's house off Gershmel Loop in Palmer.

Troopers say the Bronco turned up around 12:30 p.m. Monday on the trail off Solitude Street and Sitze Road, about 20 minutes away.

Both photos shown are of David. He was last seen on November 13, 2016. David may still be in the local area. He has small moles on his face and around his neck. David was last known to be wearing blue jeans and an orange Northface sweatshirt. He may be in need of medical attention.

Search for missing teen: volunteers to gather Saturday morning

Volunteers will gather Saturday morning and search for David Grunwald, 16, who has been missing since Sunday night.

In a press release Friday afternoon, Lt.Col. Candis Olmstead of the Alaska National Guard wrote that David is the son of retired Alaska Air National Guard member Edie Grunwald. She said people who want to help in the search can meet at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1150 Helen Dr. in Palmer. The church is located behind the Noisy Goose Restaurant.

Edith Grunwald, the teen's mother, is desperate for any information about what happened.

"The more time goes by the less likely things are going to be positive," Grunwald told Channel 2 News earlier this week.

Grunwald said David and his girlfriend, Victoria, spent Sunday at her home. She cooked them hamburgers on the grill while they studied math homework. Later that night David took his girlfriend home.

"He called me around 7:00 and he said 'I have to bring her out to the Butte,' because her dad lives out in the Smith Road area in the Butte," Grunwald said. "And I know it takes a little extra time to go out there and he said 'I might be a little late' and I said 'well then let's plan on 9:20."

By 11:30, when David hadn't returned home and wasn't answering his cell, his parents called Troopers.

"It's horrible," Grunwald said. "It shouldn't happen to anybody. I've never felt anything like this before. David's a good kid. Kids are important to all of us, you know."

David is student at Mat-Su Career and Technical High School. He's 6 feet tall and 150 pounds with short brown hair and blue eyes.

Have we ever heard of a case where someone burned their own vehicle and then took a break from their families?

Man, I hope that's what this is about.

Search for missing Valley teen draws hundreds of volunteers

An estimated 300 people gathered in Palmer Saturday morning to look for 16-year-old David Grunwald.

“Somebody knows something that may help get this boy found. Get his family some answers,” said Brenda Paradise. “Let law enforcement know.”

Many people searched on foot Saturday. Other volunteers used horses, four wheelers and dogs to cover more ground. A large portion of those searching had never met Grunwald.

Paradise said investigators did not originally plan on Saturday’s search being public, but they were thankful for the tremendous support.

While Grunwald was not found Saturday, Paradise said the search effort still helped them rule out certain areas and narrow the search zone.

Massive Search Underway in Mysterious Disappearance of Alaska Teen David Grunwald

When Alaskan teen David Grunwald didn't return home last Sunday night, his family immediately thought something was wrong.

And when his 1995 Ford Bronco was discovered abandoned and torched on a rural trail several hours later, panic set in.

"I think they are holding up as best as can be expected," Brenda Paradise, a private investigator working on the case, told Dateline. "They are preparing for the worst, but we're praying for a miracle."

On Friday, Paradise, a private investigator for a non-profit group, joined the efforts to find the team after being phoned by another Alaskan organization assisting on the case. Paradise, whose organization provides services pro-bono, told Dateline there is a massive effort to find David. "Really, this could have been anyone's kid, which is why there has been such an outpouring of people wanting to help," Paradise said.

On Monday Megan Peters, spokesperson for the Alaska State Troopers, told Dateline there have been no updates to the case. Although no official searches are being held at this time, in an effort to establish a more solid timeline of the David's movements, authorities are seeking anyone who may have seen the teen or his Bronco being driven after 7:00 p.m. that Sunday evening

"I'm not seeing any signs or red flags in this case," Paradise told Dateline. "It very well could be a case of wrong place, wrong time, wrong people."

She is also encouraging anyone who may have information in the case to call in, and to not be afraid to talk with authorities. There is now a third-party anonymous tip line anyone with information can call or text to that will be sent to police.

Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to call the Alaska State Troopers at (907) 352-5401 or Private Investigator Brenda Paradise at (281) 642-7299. You can also call or text the ANONYMOUS TIP LINE for the case at 907-290-8999

Alaska Cops Baffled by Teen's Disappearance

A massive search effort in Alaska has failed to find any trace of David Grunwald, a 16-year-old who vanished more than a week ago.

No remains were found in or around the badly burned Bronco. David's relatives "are holding up as best as can be expected," private investigator Brenda Paradise tells NBC. "They are preparing for the worst, but we're praying for a miracle." She says there's no sign that anything was bothering David. "It very well could be a case of wrong place, wrong time, wrong people," she says. Paradise, who's providing her services pro bono, tells the Dispatch News that an anonymous tip line (907-290-8999) has been set up. "A lot of people are afraid to call law enforcement; a lot of people are afraid to get involved because there's minors involved," she says.

Is there any information from the gf or her father about what time he left there? What emotional state he was in at that time? Did they have a fight? Did he say that he was definitely headed to his friend's house? Did he text his mom at all after he dropped off his gf? Did he text anyone after that time? What about the gf's father - has he been cleared? Another jealous boy who like his gf? They must know something more than they are saying to the public.

Also, who was the friend he was supposed to go see? It's been said that he never made it there, but maybe he did and the friend just won't say.

Exactly - or maybe he never left the gf's house, or maybe the gf dad followed him, etc. Clearly not enough information provided to rule out someone he knew.

Missing Palmer teen’s family offering reward for information

Sunday marked two weeks since David Grunwald, 16, disappeared. The Palmer teen’s family spent Thanksgiving the same way they’ve spent every day since then — working to bring him home.

Hundreds of volunteers have searched daily on foot and by other means, some even bringing K-9s to assist. Despite that, all Edith Grunwald knows is that her son didn’t come home after dropping his girlfriend off at her home in Palmer on Nov. 13, and then the next day, his Ford Bronco was found burned on a dirt trail in Wasilla, near Schrock Road.

“I’m horrified. I’m scared to death. We’re terrified, both of us,” Edith Grunwald said. “My whole family, they just can’t believe this. When I was 12, my father was murdered, so, you know, how much tragedy can a family have?”

She believes someone out there has information that could end the nightmare they’re living.
