MOGADISHU, SOMALIA (AP) - The most powerful bomb blast ever witnessed in Somalia's capital killed 276 people with around 300 others injured, the country's information minister said early Monday, making it the deadliest single attack in this Horn of Africa nation.

The toll could continue to rise.

In a tweet, Abdirahman Osman called the attack "barbaric" and said countries including Turkey and Kenya had already offered to send medical aid. Hospitals were overwhelmed a day after a truck bomb targeted a crowded street near key government ministries, including foreign affairs.

As angry protesters gathered near the scene of the attack, Somalia's government blamed the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab extremist group for what it called a "national disaster." However, Africa's deadliest Islamic extremist group, which often targets high-profile areas of the capital, had yet to comment.

Al-Shabab earlier this year vowed to step up attacks after both the Trump administration and Somalia's recently elected president announced new military efforts against the group.

The Mogadishu bombing is one of the deadliest attacks in sub-Saharan Africa, larger than the Garissa University attack in Kenya in 2015 and the U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.

Mogadishu truck bomb: 500 casualties in Somalia’s worst terrorist attack

At least 500 people are believed to have been killed or seriously injured in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, in one of the most lethal terrorist acts anywhere in the world for many years.

The death toll from Saturday’s attack, which involved a truck packed with several hundred kilograms of military-grade and homemade explosives, stood at 276 on Sunday, according to Associated Press, but is expected to rise as more bodies are dug from the rubble spread over an area hundreds of metres wide in the centre of the city. At least 300 people were injured, according to local reports.

Rescue workers on the ground said it would be difficult to establish a definitive death toll because the intense heat generated by the blast meant the remains of many people would never be found.

The devastating bombing will focus attention on the decade-long battle against al-Shabaab, an Islamist group, in Somalia. It provoked a chorus of international condemnation. Michael Keating, the UN special envoy to Somalia, called it “revolting”.

The US mission to Somalia said: “Such cowardly attacks reinvigorate the commitment of the United States to assist our Somali and African Union partners to combat the scourge of terrorism.”

Al-Shabab earlier this year vowed to eascalate attacks after both the Trump administration and Somalia’s recently elected president announced new military efforts against the group.

Doctors struggled to treat the huge numbers of seriously wounded victims on Sunday, while thousands of people queued to give blood in Mogadishu.

Rescue workers were still digging out injured survivors late on Sunday night. Hundreds of people took the streets to protest against the attack.

The city has been hit by multiple bombings in recent years. None have been as deadly as this attack, however.

Mogadishu attacks: Two car bombs hit Somali capital as gunfire heard inside hotel near presidential palace

The extremist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the two blasts which has killed at least 10 people

Two bombs have exploded in the Somali capital of Mogadishu close to the presidential palace and parliamentary buildings.

The first suicide car bomb is reported to have been driven through the front of a popular hotel while another car bomb was detonated at a building which had military personnel inside.

At least ten people are dead, according to police, and more than eight people are believe to be injured.

A Somali police officer, Nur Mohamed said: “The second car bomb occurred at the ex-parliament house where there were [military] forces."

Fellow police officer, Captain Mohamed Hussein says gunfire could also be heard inside the Nasa-Hablod hotel and there was fighting continuing inside.

Extremist group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the two blasts.

Major Abdullahi Aden, a police officer told Reuters the car bomb exploded at the hotel gate.

"They are fighting inside. So far we do not have casualty figures," he said.

"It is a busy hotel frequented by lawmakers, (military) forces and civilians."

The blast in Somalia's capital comes two weeks after more than 350 people were killed in a massive truck bombing on a busy Mogadishu street in the country's worst-ever attack.
