Isn't it unusual to take a bunch of depositions in a criminal case?

No, it's a common procedure in a Florida criminal prosecution, especially when the death penalty is on the table.

Florida criminal procedure may help provide further answers. Keep in mind that according to the witness list, there may be 'sensitive witnesses' who are under 18 and there was a lot of law enforcement, local and Federal, who participated in the investigation. If the defendant has any prior history with DCF there will be additional time granted to explore this history and the relevance to the current case.

Missing children hits close to home in Southwest Florida

The Children’s Advocacy Center in Collier County helps people cope with loss and traumatic experiences.

“When you have kids of your own and you think about these types of things happening to your own children it’s devastating,” said Jackie Stephens, Executive Director Children’s Advocacy Center of Collier County.

There are two ongoing missing kid cases that hit close to home.

Diana Alvarez was 9 and was last seen in her bed at her home in San Carlos Park on May 29th 2016.

If your child were to go missing the most important step is to contact your local law enforcement right away.

Organization’s like Children’s Advocacy of Southwest Florida might start feeling the impacts of the government shutdown since it’s funded by the federal government. if money runs out families that depend on victim services wouldn’t be able to use them.

Looks like they're trying to declare Florida's death penalty unconstitutional.
    Not uncommon in DP cases.

State will seek death penalty for Diana Alvarez's accused killer

The mom of a nine-year-old allegedly raped and murdered has found out the man arrested for the crimes could be sentenced to death.

She said it is a Mother's Day present with nothing to celebrate.

Jorge Guerrero is accused of kidnapping Diana Alvarez in Lee County two years ago.

Hernandez said she is happy to hear the State Attorney's Office is seeking the death penalty against Guerrero.

Prosecutors said he kidnapped, raped and murdered a nine-year-old Alvarez two years ago this month.

Guerrero is in prison after he admitted to performing sex acts on Alvarez and for having sexual images of her on his phone.

Prosecutors filed the murder charges after they said Guerrero told a cellmate that he killed the girl.

JGT received 40 years in the Federal case.

Now, it's the State of Florida's turn and they are seeking the death penalty.

His legal defense filed a 399 page motion on April 9th advising they simply could not keep up with the 'over 200' witnesses deposed by the State. And cannot estimate preliminary discovery could be completed but suggested end of next year.

*(IMO, if he'd just tell them where she is then this could move along more expeditiously. In 3 days she would have turned 12. Her Mother deserves some resolution.)
