Police, FBI investigating disappearance of 5-year-old Utah girl; uncle in custody

Local police agencies and the FBI planned to work through the night Saturday to investigate the disappearance of a 5-year-old girl who might have been with her uncle when she went missing.

Elizabeth Shelley was last seen at 2 a.m. on Saturday and was discovered missing from her home on Logan's west side at about 10 a.m. Her 21-year-old uncle, Alex Whipple, who had been at the house that night, was also gone, according to police.

Police located Whipple on foot Saturday afternoon and took him into custody, according to Logan police post on Facebook. Logan Police Capt. Tyson Budge said Whipple is "not being that cooperative" and is considered a suspect in Elizabeth's disappearance.

"The fortunate thing is we have all of the adults accounted for," Budge said. "The obvious conclusion is that she's in a lot of danger."

Regarding the girl's uncle, Budge said, "Right now we're pretty focussed on Alex."

Police are asking residents in the area between 300 South to 100 North and 300 West to 600 West who have video surveillance, including smart doorbells, to check their videos and cameras for the hours of 2 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

"All of us are still hoping we're going to find Elizabeth alive," Budge said.

‘We believe she’s been harmed’: Police search for missing 5-year-old girl in Logan

UPDATE: Police have booked the uncle on a probation violation and the search continues.
    _____________

Police officers and volunteers scoured Logan neighborhoods in search of a 5-year-old girl who was reported missing early Saturday morning.

Family members told police they last saw Elizabeth Shelley around 2 a.m. When they woke up at 10 a.m., she was gone. The girl’s 21-year-old uncle had disappeared as well, the family said.

Officers later found that man walking around the northern Utah town around 3 p.m. and detained him, according to a Logan Police Department news release. The Cache County Sheriff’s Office has been questioning him, but said he has not been cooperative.

“We’re very concerned,” said Logan police Capt. Tyson Budge. “At this point, we believe she’s been harmed.”

The FBI and local agencies worked through the night finishing search warrants and following up on leads. The main suspect Alex Whipple continued to be uncooperative and was booked into the Cache County Jail on an FTA warrant for absconding from probation. Search teams are again out this morning as we continue to look for 5-year-old Elizabeth Shelley. Thank you again for your assistance in staying out of the area. We know there are many who want to help and there are some who think they are helping by posting their concern about the perceived lack of details of this investigation. They do not have all the information because we cannot release everything pertinent to this investigation. There are many agencies in a coordinated effort working around the clock and will continue to work until she is found. We will update Facebook as information becomes available.

The girl was last seen with Whipple, who was allegedly visiting the family overnight. He was discovered missing at the same time Shelley could not be found. He allegedly had no vehicle or cell phone and Shelley’s family could not contact him.

    [...]

Around 3:00 p.m. officers found Whipple, however Shelley was not with him. He reportedly had some of her clothing in his possession and was taken into custody for questioning.

    [...]

Salt Lake County court records show Whipple had a warrant issued for his arrest last month, for violating his probation. In January 2018, he was convicted of felony theft, failing to stop at the command of law enforcement and driving under the influence.

He is a convicted felon who was sentenced to prison after engaging in a police pursuit in a stolen truck while intoxicated, Sept. 17, 2017.

His prison sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation for 5 years. The FTA warrant was issued on April 29, 2019, for his failure to comply with probation.

Searchers did find clues of “evidentiary value” near the girl’s home that police say indicate she’s likely nearby

He is being held on $250,000 bond, according to the Cache County Sheriff's Office's website.

Whipple has not been formally arrested in connection with Elizabeth's disappearance, but Budge told ABC News authorities are "pretty confident" he had something to do with it. A burner phone Whipple was allegedly using was among the evidence found at the girl's home, allegedly linking him to her disappearance, according to Budge.

Employee: Suspect in missing child case came into Hyrum gas station
    POSTED 10:15 PM, MAY 26, 2019

But a gas station in Hyrum is helping police create a better timeline for Whipple's whereabouts on Saturday. Police confirmed Whipple was seen on surveillance at the Hyrum Shortstop.

Ryan Liljenquist, who works at the Hyrum Shortstop, said he saw Whipple on Saturday afternoon. At the time, he didn't know about Lizzy's disappearance.

"He was walking this way from the townhouses over there, to come in here to buy something," Liljenquist said. He said he was leaving the store at the time Whipple was walking in.

    Whipple was alone, Liljenquist said.

"Disheveled, like he had been on a binge of some kind," Liljenquist recalled. "He was wearing a gray hoodie. Underneath that hoodie, was a kind of a suit and tie, something really weird."

Liljenquist said Whipple bought cigarettes and beer. That was at about 1:30 p.m. Logan Police said authorities caught up to Whipple less than two hours later a few miles away from the Hyrum Shortstop, walking along a country road.

Evidence ties uncle to missing 5-year-old Utah girl, police say

'Uncooperative' suspect was hiding baseball bat when arrested; search continues for Logan child

    [...]

When deputies arrested Whipple, he was found with a baseball bat "along the roadside near 7600 S. 2400 West" and was asked several times to identify himself, a police affidavit states. "The individual refused to identify himself multiple times."

Whipple tried to get away from the Cache County sheriff's deputies as they tried to arrest him. "(He) continued to be combative and was assisted to the ground and handcuffed. (He) had a metal baseball bat tucked in his back pocket and hidden in his jacket along his back," the affidavit states.

"Alex began telling us that he had paraphernalia and drugs on him. A search incident to arrest discovered a pipe consistent with drug use in his right coat pocket and in a left pocket a silver container with thick residue that had an odor … consistent with marijuana," police wrote.

Deputies said Whipple also had an unopened can of beer, despite, a "no alcohol clause" as part of his probation.

Uncle charged with murder in disappearance of 5-year-old Utah girl

Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen said Wednesday that even though the body of Elizabeth "Lizzy" Shelley has not been found, her blood was located on a watch and a sweat shirt of her uncle, 21-year-old Alex Whipple.

Prosecutors say they also have a broken kitchen knife with the girl's blood on it and her skirt, which was "hastily buried" near the family home.

Whipple was charged with aggravated murder, child kidnapping and desecration of a human body.
