JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. - Ronnie Leon Hyde, 60, was arrested at his Jacksonville Beach home early Tuesday morning and charged with the 1994 murder in the death of a 16-year-old Fred Laster, a Nassau County boy who was reported missing from Jacksonville.

Columbia County investigators had worked the case 23 years since the discovery of a dismembered body of a young man at a gas station at the U.S. 441 exit of Interstate 10. Using new technology, the remains were recently identified as Laster.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children helped investigate the case.

"The dedication and professionalism of the initial team of investigators all the way through the present team has enabled the family to have some closure," Columbia County Sheriff Mark Hunter said. “Fred's immediate surviving family has been notified of this arrest and they are in our thoughts and prayers."

An FBI team continues searching Hyde's home on Fourth Avenue near Ninth Street looking for evidence in the 23-year-old homicide case from Columbia County. A second search was going on at a home on Thelma Street, which also connected to Hyde.

Hyde, who has lived in Jacksonville most of his life and has traveled frequently in the U.S. and abroad, was once named subject in a previous international child exploitation case.

The FBI said Hyde was a counselor and likely had access to other children over the years. They ask that anyone else who may have been victimized by Hyde to call 904-248-7000.

"This is a reminder that justice has no expiration date, and my office intends to continue the hard work of our law enforcement partners to deliver long-delayed justice," said State Attorney Melissa Nelson, whose office will prosecute Hyde.

It is sad but I hope if there are other victims of his, they could put these families at rest.

I find this confusing. Was Fred not reported missing for a year?
"Two years after WJXT's investigation, Stalnecker was arrested on a Duval County forgery charge. That was in 1995, the same year Fred Laster was reporting missing to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and one year after police believe Hyde killed and dismembered the the teenager."

Its all been confusing to me also @Paradise .......The below article says his sister reported him missing in 94 but from everything ive read it wasn't until 2015 that a new detective started looking into the cold case and started a more active investigation and in 2016 after going through Hydes trash ( because he was the last person to be seen with him) got dna that matched a shirt that was found with the body parts of Laster (in 94)...at which time dna testing was done on hydes family to confirm the match..Its all mind boggling and IMO there is going to be more victims coming forward.....sad situation and a very sick man :-(

In June of 1994, an unidentified, dismembered male body was found behind a Lake City gas station. It wasn't until 2015 that DNA tests identified the victim as 16-year-old Fred Laster.
Laster's family had reported him missing in 1994. His sister told police her brother was last seen with Hyde -- a youth pastor and family friend.

I get the feeling that the family may have thought Fred ran away, since it took a few months to report him missing.

Nothing angers me more than someone using the church to gain access to kids, which is what it looks like Hyde was doing,

Cold case murder: Key detective's tie to child trafficking cases

The I-TEAM has learned investigators had been watching Hyde's activity and potential travel for at least a year.

The arrest affidavit reveals that the main investigator laying out the case against Hyde is a deputy sheriff with Columbia County, where Laster's body was found. The I-TEAM found that the same investigator is also a deputy Marshal assigned to the FBI office in Jacksonville to investigate crimes against children, including child sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors, which is on the rise in Florida.

With searches at Hyde's two Duval County properties, and a rented U-Haul truck to house evidence, federal and local investigators are trying to answer how sinister their murder suspect really is.

"In the course of this homicide investigation, we determined that Hyde was the main subject in a previous international child exploitation case. We also learned that throughout his various positions and jobs in the Jacksonville area, he had the potential for childhood victims he had access. He had access to children in multiple position he held throughout the area," said FBI Special Agent Charles Spencer.

Spencer is one of several agents looking at Hyde's connection to child exploitation in Jacksonville and beyond, saying Hyde traveled "extensively" and had "extensive access" to children through his travels, as well as through his job locally as a mental health counselor.

The federal government considers child exploitation to include child pornography, child sexual abuse and the prostitution of children.

One of Laster's siblings told authorities that Hyde "always wanted to take up his time with young male boys with problems," the arrest affidavit said. On Wednesday, a man came forward to tell News4Jax reporter Erik Avanier that he was the in area's child welfare system and facing homelessness when he was targeted by Hyde, saying he feels Hyde targeted other homeless youth in the area.

I have been wondering since this come to light if the perp is behind any other missing kids in the area especially thinking of the Mark Degner and Bryan Hayes who went missing February 2005.
