    CHILD DEATH
Mother, girlfriend charged in death of boy found dead on Galveston beach

    Updated seconds ago
    GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) --
Galveston police have charged two women in connection with the death of a 4-year-old boy whose body was found on a beach.

In a press conference Wednesday morning, authorities identified the child as Jayden Alexander Lopez from Houston.

Police say they arrested Jayden's mother, Rebecca Suzanne Rivera and her girlfriend Dania Amezquita Gomez.

It's believed both women were present at the time of Jayden's death and that they dumped his body in Galveston.

Rivera has been charged with tampering or fabricated physical evidence, a felony. She is being held on $250,000.

Amezquita Gomez has been charged with a misdemeanor. She is being held on a $100,000 bond.

Authorities have been working on the case since Oct. 20, 2017, when Jayden's body was found.

Until he was identified, he went by the name "Little Jacob." A sketch was released to draw help from the public.

"Little Jacob" case: Tip leads to ID of boy found dead on Galveston beach; two arrested

A child found dead on a Texas beach last October has been identified by authorities, and the boy's mother and her girlfriend are under arrest, Galveston police announced Wednesday. Authorities in Galveston had appealed to the public for help in identifying "Little Jacob," even taking the rare step in January of releasing a photo of the deceased child.

CBS affiliate KHOU reports tips led authorities to identify the boy as four-year-old Jayden Alexander Lopez, Galveston police chief Vernon Hale said.

"The citizens helped us solve this," Hale said.

Police say the boy lived with his mother Rebecca Rivera, 34, and her girlfriend Dania Sarai Amezquita Gomez, 31, in Houston. Gomez faces a misdemeanor charge of tampering or fabricating physical evidence, while Rivera is facing a felony count of the same charge. Police say the boy was abused before he died, and that the couple traveled to Galveston County from Houston to dump his body in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, reports the station.

Officials would not say whether they believed Rivera was involved in the boy's death.

Authorities haven't said how the boy died. No one had reported him missing, officials said.

"No one was looking for Jayden. We had to become his advocate," FBI supervisory special agent Bryan Gaines said Wednesday.

Police say the crucial tip came in Jan. 30 from someone who knew the boy after officials released the image of the boy's body. The tipster provided the names of the child's mother and her girlfriend.

Rivera is being held on a bond of $260,000. Amezquita Gomez is being held on a bond of $100,000.

Police also said there was another child, 3, living with the family. The child was unharmed and has been removed from the home.

A lot of people hated that they released a photo of his body. But it worked.
It was shocking and crude and terrible. But it was reality. And it worked.

On May 16, during an interview at an ICE detention facility in Houston, Gomez told investigators that she rode to Galveston with Rivera in October, according to the complaint. She did not say how the boy died and claimed she did not remember other details because she was drunk at the time, according to the complaint.

On Tuesday, police again went to the Houston apartment to speak with Rivera. During an interview, she told investigators that Jayden had fallen and hit his head two weeks before he died, according to the complaint. His health from there deteriorated, she said, according to the complaint.

He died in the middle of the night, according to the complaint.

If your child falls and hits his head and his condition starts deteriorating, you TAKE HIM TO THE HOSPITAL. Not wait for him to die and throw him in the water.

There should be no restrictions on finding a child missing.
    Whatever it takes.

    IF your child falls...
The charges are what they are for now. I wonder if LE will be able to tell if his injuries were likely to be from a fall.

Or if he did fall, perhaps they had some other motivation to avoid contact with authorities.

Well, yeah. There is that. I don't really believe he fell either.
I believe they said early on that there were no outward signs of physical abuse. BUT there were signs of neglect.

Rivera admitted to investigators that she abused Jayden in the days leading up to his death, striking the boy with “whatever I could find,” including clothes hangers, authorities said. He was also described as “malnourished,” weighing about half of the weight of a boy his age.

It is not yet clear if there was a pattern of abuse over the course of the boy’s life. A Department of Family and Protective Services investigator obtained records in July 2016 indicating that Jayden had been admitted to Texas Children’s Hospital with a broken left thigh bone, which was later confirmed by the Galveston County medical examiner.

Rivera’s other son, a 3-year old boy, was placed in foster care after she was taken into custody. Typically, when the Department of Family and Protective Services removes a child from his or her parent’s care, they reach out to the next of kin and any extended family willing to take custody of the child.

The fact that the boy was placed in foster care means that family members were either unable to care for him or that nobody claimed him as family.

I really want to see a picture of Jayden smiling. But I doubt there is one. :(

RIP Little Jayden: Boy found dead on Galveston beach laid to rest

After months of police investigation to discover who he was and what happened to him, Jayden Lopez, 4, has finally been laid to rest.

On Friday, his funeral was held in Houston at La Paz Memorial Funeral Home.

The owner donated space, the casket, and vehicles for a procession.

Lopez was buried at Hollywood Cemetery, where he was given a donated plot.

Members of Lopez's family, including his aunt, were at the funeral but declined to comment.

"No one reported Jayden as missing. No one was looking for Jayden. Jayden had no advocate other than us," he said. "Someone took a beautiful, innocent child and discarded him in the ocean as if he was a piece of trash."
