Missing Minneapolis woman's remains identified nearly 50 years after disappearance

Investigators received a major break in a nearly 50-year-old case in Mille Lacs County thanks to DNA, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

A woman found dead in an abandoned Mille Lacs County home 49 years ago has now been identified after the BCA matched her DNA to family members. Authorities identified her as 18-year-old Gloria Frieda Rieken of Minneapolis.

“This is not the ending any family would hope for, but it is information,” said BCA Superintendent Drew Evans. “After a half century of waiting and wondering, the Riekens can at last bring Gloria home to rest.”

The Mille Lacs County Sheriff says their focus will now be working to determine how Rieken ended up in the abandoned home and how she died.

Just last week authorities received their first major break in a missing person case from the 1970s involving a Hayfield High School graduate.

Wednesday, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Rieken family, of southern Minnesota, held a press conference announcing a breakthrough in the missing person case of Gloria Rieken.

According to authorities, in early November 1970, 18-year-old Gloria left her Minneapolis apartment and was heading to the University of Minnesota campus, where she was attending school, but never arrived.

On November 9, 1970 a fire broke out in an abandoned home in Mille Lacs County and according to authorities, the next day a neighbor discovered human remains inside the home.

At that time, authorities said the medical examiner was able to determine the person was a woman and that the fire did not kill her, however, her identity and the cause of death could not be determined.

In 2013 Gloria's family members contacted the BCA to give DNA samples so authorities could begin searching through unidentified remains.

Authorities said in 2018 the body of the unidentified woman found in the Mille Lacs home were exhumed and last week two DNA samples were confirmed to be a match.

This is the first break in the case in 49 years. Now, authorities are asking for the public's help in piecing together the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death.

Glad it's solved! It looks like she was found about 90 miles from where she went missing, is that correct?

    Well, isn't he a lovely creature. o_O

According to the warrant, Timothy Joseph Crosby, 53, is being investigated in the death of Victoria Marie Morris, who disappeared in late June or early July 1994, shortly after she was released from jail.

Morris, 25, was a drug user and prostitute, according to an investigation by St. Paul police, the search warrant said. Her remains were found Oct. 8, 1994, in St. Michael, Minn., in Wright County, according to the search warrant. Crosby’s family owned a cabin near Eagle Lake in Wright County.

Morris was strangled, and a cold-case investigation started by Wright County found unknown male DNA on the object used to kill her. The object was found at the crime scene.

Judge Michael DeCourcy issued a warrant July 7 to take a DNA sample from Crosby, and a saliva sample was taken two days later, according to a return on the search warrant.

The application, by St. Paul police Sgt. Thomas Bergren, noted Morris’ body was found between St. Paul and the Crosby cabin.

Reached by phone Tuesday, Crosby said, “I’m not going to say anything.”

“Don’t you think if there was some truth in something, they’d already have taken me away?” he asked. He said the information in the search warrant affidavit was “not true.”

His wife, Mary Crosby, said Crosby wasn’t involved in Morris’ death because her husband was seeing her in 1994.

“The last thing I need to worry about is I’m going to come home from work and my husband was arrested for something he didn’t do,” she said.

The warrant application also states Crosby is a suspect in a cold-case investigation into the June 1974 disappearance of a woman identified as B.V., who was staying in a cabin about 100 yards from Crosby’s cabin.

The affidavit states Crosby was living alone in the cabin at the time, and when sheriff’s deputies questioned him in 1974, he said B.V. had come to his cabin June 14 looking for his sister but left when he told her that she wasn’t there.

The warrant application says the cabin was the scene of another crime in which Crosby, then 18, was arrested in December 1974 after allegedly picking up a female hitchhiker in St. Paul. When the hitchhiker tried to get out of the vehicle, she found the door handles of the car had been removed, according to the warrant.

The affidavit says Crosby handcuffed the hitchhiker at gunpoint and drove her to the cabin where he made her undress and pose for photographs. The affidavit says Crosby then took her to another location and sexually assaulted her at knifepoint.

The hitchhiker is identified as M.E. in the warrant. It states Crosby “made statements and inferences to M.E. that her life was in jeopardy and told her that he had committed violence against other females in the past.”

The warrant says Crosby drove the hitchhiker back to St. Paul, where she saw a police car as they were driving around the State Fairgrounds. She caused Crosby’s car to swerve to the curb and hit a tree in front of the police car, and when the officers investigated, they arrested Crosby, the warrant application said.

The warrant application states Crosby no longer owns the cabin in Wright County and that police searched it last month. Residents of the area at the time of B.V.’s disapperance said they knew the interior door handles of the car Crosby was driving had been removed, the warrant states.

The warrant application said Crosby was sent to the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter for treatment in the sexual offender program.

Crosby was released in January 1982 and returned in 1983 after committing a similar crime April 26, 1983, the affidavit states.

Details of the 1983 incident aren’t described in the warrant application, but a St. Paul case is cited in which Crosby was arrested July 18, 1987, in the sexual assault of a female prostitute he picked up on University Avenue.

The warrant application says Crosby brought the victim to his apartment near Rice Street and Larpenteur Avenue, tied her up and repeatedly sexually assaulted her. The victim escaped by jumping out of the apartment window, it says.

In regards to his 1974 "Sexual Assault" Victim. I don't understand why he would be driving around the "Minnesota State fair grounds" with her. But Thank God. For her, He did! The Streets are paved and named. And are used NO other time of the Year. My Parents and I would go every Year, Since I was 4. And spend 8-12 Hrs there. So the SAME YEAR THIS HAPPENED. 1974. The "Minnesota State fair" is one of the biggest in the Country!! Daily attendance is often 100,000 People. Yes, No Typo. 100,000. He is also Suspect in the Disappearance of a 17 YR old. ALSO in 1974. In another County.
