Official denies estate access to parents of dismembered teen Grace Packer

A Pennsylvania court official has ruled neither the biological parents nor the adoptive grandparents of a 14-year-old who prosecutors say was killed and dismembered by her adoptive mother can become administrators of the girl's estate.

    [...]

The official wrote Grace's estate couldn't go to her adoptive grandparents either because of a potential conflict of interest due to their daughter's trial.

A court-appointed administrator will handle the girl's estate.

Grace Packer trial delayed until 2019

The trials to determine what happened to 14-year-old Grace Packer, a former Allentown student allegedly raped and murdered by her adoptive mother and the mother’s boyfriend in Richland Township in 2016, have been postponed until January.

Jury selection in the trials of Sara Packer, 43, and Jacob Sullivan, 45, had been slated for Sept. 17 in Doylestown. Court records show that Bucks County Judge Diane Gibbons recently granted a defense motion to continue the case and set it for Jan. 14.

Gibbons previously sealed the file, so details of the motion are not public. Due to a gag order, lawyers on both sides of the case declined to comment Thursday. Sara Packer and Sullivan are being tried separately.

Timeline questioned for 'suicide pact' in Grace Packer case

The woman described by prosecutors as being in a “polyamorous” relationship with Sara Packer and Jacob Sullivan testified Monday in Bucks County Court that she was not aware the couple planned to commit suicide as police closed in on them for the rape and murder of 14-year-old Grace Packer.

    [...]

Sullivan’s lawyer, Chief Public Defender Christina King, pressed Allbright for details about her client’s suicide attempt. King noted that a full five minutes passed after Allbright got home before she dialed 911. A neighbor’s security camera recorded her car arriving, and 911 logs showed the time of the call.

“Weren’t you indeed hiding Sara in the bathroom at that time?” King asked.

    “No,” Allbright replied.

Allbright previously testified before a grand jury, and will likely be called as a trial witness. She has not been charged with a crime.

    [...]

In court Monday, King disclosed that she had interviewed Sara Packer at the county jail before she knew that she would be assigned to represent Sullivan. The conversation was placed on the record after Sara Packer’s court-appointed attorney confirmed that his client was waiving her attorney-client privilege. King said she wanted to avoid any ethical dilemmas that might arise.

King testified that she introduced herself to Sara Packer and asked if she had any questions.

“Is he dead?” King recalled Sara Packer asking. “Did he make a statement? That wasn’t the plan.”

I am glad to see this case is here. I had to catch up and remind myself of the horrors of these so-called parents, but Grace deserves our support. I plan to be here for the trial!

Court says 'no' to family as executors for slain teen Grace Packer's estate

Neither Grace Packer’s biological parents nor her adoptive grandparents should have control over the slain teen’s estate, a Montgomery County court official has ruled.

Instead, a court-appointed administrator will handle Grace’s estate, at least until after her mother, Sara Packer, stands trial in Bucks County for her part in Grace’s alleged rape and murder.

In a ruling filed last week in Montgomery County Court, Register of Wills Bruce Hanes wrote that he found problems with the petitions filed by Rose and Rodney Hunsicker, Grace’s biological parents, and Warren and Evelyn Packer, her adoptive grandparents.

Per PA court records, the trial has been postponed to March 14, 2019.

Judge tosses "emotionally disturbing" photos from Grace Packer trial

Calling the images “emotionally disturbing,” Bucks County Judge Diane Gibbons on Friday denied prosecutors’ requests to show close-up photos of Grace Packer’s dismembered body to a jury.

At issue were photos of the 14-year-old’s head, torso and limbs as they were found by hunters in October 2016.

“I don’t know how anyone could look at that photo, as a human being, and not be emotionally disturbed,” Gibbons said of a collection of limbs on a blue tarp.

District Attorney Matt Weintraub told the judge he wanted to use the photo, as well as a picture of Grace’s head and torso lying in the woods, to show what hunters saw when they stumbled upon her remains in Luzerne County.

Project PA | A new twist in the Grace Packer murder investigation

Sullivan now says it was Sara Packer who was the mastermind behind Grace's killing in 2016; her attorney making the argument in Bucks County court last week.

This latest development comes after an earlier confession, recorded by police in January 2017, here prosecutors say Sullivan confessed to the killing.

It's been more than two years since Sullivan and Packer were charged with the murder of the 14-year-old girl.

After several delays, jury selection for their trial gets underway next week.

Both are facing a long list of charges including abuse of corpse, kidnapping, and criminal homicide.

Sullivan's facing the death penalty, and Packer may face the same fate.

    That’s still undecided.

Jacob Sullivan pleads guilty in rape, murder of 14-year-old Grace Packer

The Bucks County man accused of raping and killing his girlfriend's adopted daughter has pleaded guilty.

Jury selection was set to begin Tuesday morning in the trial of Jacob Sullivan, but was delayed several hours.

Instead, Sullivan pleaded guilty shortly after noon. Sara Packer, also charged in the case but being tried separately, is expected to plead guilty as well, her attorney said Tuesday afternoon.

The guilty plea process was interrupted after Jacob was taken to the hospital for a medical issue.

The hearing will resume Wednesday at 8:30 a.m.

Jacob Sullivan's lawyers say Sara Packer 'manipulated' him into murdering her adoptive daughter, Grace

With the death penalty looming for Jacob Sullivan in the rape and murder of 14-year-old Grace Packer, his lawyers intend to show that he was dominated by Grace’s adoptive mother, Sara Packer, whom they contend had a history of sexually abusing children.

In a Bucks County courtroom on Friday, Sullivan’s lawyers said they will present evidence at his upcoming sentencing hearing that Packer “groomed” Sullivan to sexually assault Grace, and that she had abused other children, including having three-way sex with her then-husband and an underage foster child in Allentown at least twice.

They also plan to call a man who claims that during a Facebook chat, Sara Packer offered to find him a virgin to have sex with. Prosecutors say the defense misconstrued the conversation.

Prosecutors tried to keep the defense from presenting evidence against Packer, who also is charged with the murder. What she did before meeting Sullivan isn’t relevant now that he has pleaded guilty to first-degree murder, rape and other charges, they said.

But Judge Diane E. Gibbons sided with the defense, agreeing that they can use the information to make their case that Sullivan should be spared the death penalty because he was under the “substantial domination” of Packer when he committed the crime.

“He met a person who was already engaged in the sexual abuse of children. I don’t see how that’s not relevant,” the judge said.

Had the case gone to trial, Sullivan’s lawyers would not have been permitted to bring up Packer’s past. But, the judge noted, when the question of life or death is on the table, the law is more lenient about what can be presented.

'Her life ended in a house of horrors': Jury deliberating life or death for Grace Packer's killer

For two full minutes — the length of time Sullivan said it took him to strangle Grace — Weintraub stared at Sullivan, not speaking. The only sound was from Grace’s relatives weeping softly in the gallery.

Sullivan’s back was to the audience. He turned his head toward Weintraub, then toward the screen to his left, then toward the jury on his right. Weintraub’s eyes never moved.

    [..]

Sullivan, 46, pleaded guilty last month to first-degree murder, rape of a child and related charges. A jury in Doylestown is now deliberating his sentence. They have only two choices: Life or death.
