Night-time mountain search for missing US tourist Gregory Osborn

    September 24 2016 - 7:12PM

Police and emergency workers are still searching Mt Coolum on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday night using a helicopter with heat sensitive equipment for a missing 66-year-old American tourist.

Mt Coolum police believe Gregory Osborn may have fallen and be lying injured on Mt Coolum after walking to the top of the 208-metre high local highspot.

Mr Osborn was last seen on top of Mt Coolum around 10am and previously at Marcoola on Friday and his partner contacted police after her husband did not return.

About 30 State Emergency Services workers moved their search from the beach at Marcoola to Mt Coolum yesterday after confirmation he had been seen at the summit of the popular tourist attraction.

"Many parts of the mountain are dense bushland and a helicopter with thermal imaging will conduct additional searches tonight," a police spokesman said.

The ground search will begin on Sunday morning

Mr Osborn had been seen at a hotel at Marcoola and on David Low Way around 8am on Friday.

He is described as Caucasian, 160cm tall, proportionate build with brown hair and speaks with an American accent.

He was last seen wearing a green hooded jacket, grey three-quarter length sweat pants, 'croc' shoes and carrying a bag.

Mt Coolum with Coolum Beach in foreground. It's not a massive mountain but does have a lot of dense bush surrounding it. This mountain is in a way similar to Uluru in centre of Oz.

Earlier tonight it was confirmed on radio the body located was Gregory. The news mentioned police believe he slipped and fell to his death.

I thought he most likely could have fallen somewhere on that mountain but that he'd be found alive today.

Gregory and his wife were on their first trip to Oz. So sad their trip ended in such a terrible way.
