When I stayed here, security was tight. Asked why. "Large Muslim population," security told me.

'We ask for your prayers': Philippines hotel on lockdown during Isil attack

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) terrorists claimed responsibility for an attack at a hotel and leisure complex in Manila, Philippines, on Thursday night.

Gunfire and explosions were heard at Resorts World Manila in Pasay City at midnight local time.

Witnesses uploaded footage of wounded people being led out to ambulances and pictures of clouds of smoke billowing out of the hotel windows.

One witness said that gunfire was heard on the second floor of the hotel, and another that men dressed in black had opened fire at the upmarket resort.

Philippine police rushed to the complex in the early hours of the morning. Fire trucks and a SWAT team were also at the hotel, which is across a road from one of the main terminals of the Philippines' international airport.

Philippines police cordoned off the area near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport.

There were no immediate reports of fatalities or injuries.

Isil channels quickly claimed responsibility for the attack in metropolitan Manila.

The terror group said "lonewolf soldiers" from its group carried out the attack, according to the SITE Intelligence Group that monitors terrorist organisations.

In an alleged message by an Isil member on messaging service WhatsApp, they said: "The lonewolf soldiers of Khilafah attack the heart of Kufar the city of Manila in Resort World."

The Foreign Office changed its travel advice for Brits in the Philippines following the attack. It advised travellers to avoid the area and follow the advice of local authorities.

Gunman torches Philippine casino, killing at least 36 people

A gunman burst into a casino in the Philippine capital Manila on Friday, firing shots, setting gaming tables alight and killing at least 36 people, all suffocating in thick smoke, in what officials believe was a botched robbery.

There was no evidence linking the attack at the Resorts World Manila entertainment complex to fighting between government troops and Islamist militants in the country's south, said Ernesto Abella, a spokesman for President Rodrigo Duterte.

"All indications point to a criminal act by an apparently emotionally disturbed individual," Abella told a news conference. "Although the perpetrator gave warning shots, there apparently was no indication that he wanted to do harm or shoot anyone."

The gunman killed himself in his hotel room after being shot and wounded by resort security, police and Resorts World management said. A second "person of interest" who was in the casino at the time was cooperating with the investigation, police said.

Most of the dead suffocated in the chaos. Fire bureau spokesman Ian Manalo said many guests and staff had tried to hide from the gunfire rather than get out of the building when attack began shortly after midnight (1600 GMT) and fell victim to the choking smoke.

Oscar Albayalde, chief of the capital's police office, said those who died were in the casino's main gaming area.

"What caused their deaths is the thick smoke," he told reporters. "The room was carpeted and of course the tables, highly combustible."

A Resorts World Manila official said the dead included 22 guests.
