Police probe killing of Binghamton University nursing student

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- Authorities in upstate New York are investigating the death of a Binghamton University nursing student. Police say that 22-year-old Haley Anderson, of Westbury, Long Island, was found dead at an off-campus residence on Friday. Her death was later ruled a homicide.

Police say a male nursing student at the university who had a previous relationship with the victim is a person of interest. They say the male student had left the country on an international flight before the victim's body was found.

Police on Saturday did not reveal the cause of death. Binghamton police officers found the senior's body during a welfare check.

Police are looking for Anderson’s ex-beau, also a nursing student at Binghamton, whom they described as a person of interest.

The ex-boyfriend left the country on an international flight before Anderson’s body was discovered, authorities said. Cops did not release his identity.

“This incident and the circumstances of the death was not a random act or involving the conduct of a stranger,” the Binghamton Police Department said.

Officials identified the person of interest as Orlando Tercero, 22, who they say flew to Nicaragua before her body was discovered.

Police say Mr Tercero is a US citizen and also a nursing student at the university.

"The victim and male student had a previous domestic and romantic relationship," Binghamton Police said.

"The investigation determined that the person of interest had left the United States by an international air travel flight before Ms Anderson's body was found."

The cause of death was not revealed over the weekend by police, but a post-mortem examination found it was a homicide.

Police Report: Haley Anderson suspected Tercero slashed her tires, months before her death
    Anthony Borrelli, aborrelli@pressconnects.com | @PSBABorrelliPublished 12:06 p.m. ET March 15, 2018 | Updated 6:37 a.m. ET March 16, 2018

The homicide of Binghamton University nursing student Haley Anderson was not the first time Orlando Tercero's name arose to law enforcement in connection to their relationship, according to Binghamton police records.

On Sept. 17, nearly six months before the 22-year-old Long Island native's body was discovered in Tercero's Oak Street apartment, Binghamton police investigated a complaint that Tercero had allegedly slashed all four of Anderson's car tires outside her Florence Avenue home.

Anderson's death has drawn national media coverage and on Thursday, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer pressed for Tercero's extradition from Nicaragua.

Tercero, who is a 22-year-old BU nursing student, was not arrested in connection with the September tire-slashing incident — records said Anderson declined to press charges — but police labeled it a criminal mischief complaint.
