Ilene Micheloff has been missing from California since 1989.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Ilene was last seen walking home from school around 3:00 pm in Dublin, California on January 30, 1989. Her backpack was later found in a creek bed in a nearby park. It was located after the area had already been searched, and authorities believe it may have been placed there afterward. There are several suspects in Ilene's case, but no proof has ever been found and no charges have ever been filed.

Most recent article from January of this year...

Annual vigil for Ilene Misheloff to be in Dublin Thursday night

The annual march and candlelight vigil for Ilene Misheloff, the 13-year-old kidnapped off a Dublin street 26 years ago, will wind through that East Bay town Thursday night.

Ilene, an accomplished figure skater with a shy smile, was among an alarming wave of children kidnapped from the Bay Area in the 1980s whose cases remain unsolved.

Search Goes on For Answers to Missing Girl

Her final walk home from school took place January 30, 1989.

It was a Monday, and the 13-year-old was likely looking forward to watching the 16th Annual American Music Awards that night on TV, perhaps hoping to see Paula Abdul or Tiffany. Michael Jackson was to receive a Special Achievement Award, something the kids at school would be talking about the next day.

Instead, they were talking about her, Ilene Misheloff. It wasn't just students at Wells Middle School talking; it was the entire Bay Area. Ilene had disappeared, an unfathomable occurrence in the cozy, suburban town of Dublin whose population then was just 23,000.

To this day, Ilene's abduction remains an unsolved case. A $100,000 reward continues to be offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Dublin: 28th annual Ilene Misheloff walk set for Monday

If she were home, Ilene Misheloff soon would be celebrating her 42nd birthday, and people would be gathering to join her.

Instead, there will be a gathering of another kind on Monday, the 28th annual candlelight vigil and walk to remember Misheloff, and to keep her name in the public consciousness.

“We’re ready to hear anything, but we still hope that we’ll find her,” said the girl’s father, Mike Misheloff, who expects 100 to 130 people Monday night. He and Ilene’s mother Maddie Misheloff still live in the same Dublin house Ilene lived in when she was abducted. “We haven’t given up, and we won’t.”

Dublin police are still investigating the Misheloff abduction and are accepting any information about the case, no matter how seemingly insignificant it may be. There also is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone responsible for Ilene’s disappearance; Dublin police can be reached at 925-833-6670.

Monday night’s vigil will begin at Wells Middle School, 6800 Penn Drive in Dublin, and as has been the case each year since 1990, will wind about a mile and a half from the school to St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, 11555 Shannon Ave., where at approximately 8 p.m. there will be a nondenominational and ecumenical prayer service.

Mike Misheloff said Friday that the vigil serves also as a tribute to the people who have come to many of the marches.

“We are thinking of all of those people just as much as they’ve been thinking about us, and we thank them,” he said.

It was the scariest, most unbelievable event.
At that time, I think there were only 3 or four roads out of the lake, through the Sierras.
Both my husband and I were amazed that anybody could have made it our of there since road blocks would have easily yielded any suspects.
Sure enough, they had used the road to Sacremento, unnoticed.
I guess it was a slower, different world in that area and we were Big City People.
