Ivy was last seen leaving a relative's home on the afternoon of March 14, 2010 and has not been seen or heard from since. Leinen reportedly went for a walk and about 15 to 20 minutes later did not come back. She was with four of the family’s dogs, and when the dogs came back to the residence without her, the family started looking for her. The residence is on the Missouri River, and after searching the area with tracking dogs into the night, the girl’s tracks were located and led across to an island.

After following the girl’s tracks on the island, the tracks led searchers to the main channel of the Missouri River. The tracks of the girl and the dogs were found on the ice-covered river near an open water area. The tracks of the girl led to the edge of the open area of the river and none were found to return. The girl’s and the dog’s tracks are such that searchers believe the girl may have fallen into the open water.

    Details of Disappearance
Ivy was last seen leaving her home east of Poplar Bridge in Poplar, Montana at 4:00 p.m. on March 14, 2010. She went to take four of her family's dogs for a walk and never returned. The dogs came back without her fifteen or twenty minutes later. She has never been heard from again.

Authorities believe Ivy fell through thin ice on the Missouri River. Searchers followed her tracks across the ice-covered river before they suddenly ended at a hole in the ice on the main channel of the river.

They found the dogs' tracks there too. It appeared as if Ivy had fallen into the water and then her dogs ran back and forth along the hole, unable to help her.

Ivy was a fifth-grader at Culbertson School at the time of her disappearance. She lived with her mother and grandparents. She is presumed to be deceased and her family held a memorial service for her shortly after her disappearance, but her body has never been found.

    Ivy Marie Leinen 1999-2010
    • Mar 16, 2010
Ivy Marie Leinen, a fifth-grade student at Culbertson School, was born March 2, 1999, in Wolf Point. A precious and happy child, she loved the changing of the seasons, Barbie dolls and butterflies.

In 2001, she moved with her mother, Anita Rose Leinen, to western Montana where her mother worked as a counselor first in Deer Lodge and later in Butte. Ivy danced in rain puddles and laughed in the wind.

Ivy and her mother returned to her grandparents’ home in Poplar in 2005, enjoying the companionship of family and cousins as they shared special events including baptisms and first communions.

vy brought joy to the lives she touched with her unique sense of humor. She loved drawing caricatures. The world will miss her Van Gogh talent in light and color. Ivy’s family wants parents to remind their children to “stay away from the river.”

Ivy is survived by her parents: mother, Anita Rose Ann Leinen, and foster father, Christopher Fabert; grandparents Paul and Rhonda (Erickson) Leinen, Poplar; great-grandparents, Marvin and Bettie Erickson, Ekalaka, Laura Jean Erickson, Ekalaka, and Viola Leinen, Fairmont, N.D. Also grateful for sharing her life are her aunt Carlee (Paul) Timm, Selfridge, N.D., and cousins David and Tracee Leinen, and Brandee Timm; aunt Jennifer (David) Wickstrom, Buffalo, S.D., and cousins Shawnee, Harley and Peyton; aunt Liz (Joey) Raaum, Culbertson, and cousins, Isabella and Zackery O’Neill and Gavin Raaum.

Also grateful for sharing her life were her many great aunts, uncles and cousins, including special uncles Mark, Jim, Jerry and Clete (Paulette).

A memorial service is scheduled to be held 10 a.m., Thursday, March 18, 2010, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Poplar.

Search for 11-year-old girl stops after footprints indicate she fell into river
    • Gazette Staff

Authorities have ceased searching for a missing Richland County girl after finding footsteps that indicate she likely fell from ice into the Missouri River.

Richland County Sheriff Brad Baisch said Ivy Marie Leinen was reported missing at about 4 p.m. on Sunday when she did not return from a walk. The 11-year-old had left for the walk with four of the family’s dogs, and her family became worried when the dogs returned home alone.

Baisch said that rescuers discovered footsteps leading to an island on the Missouri River last night when they were combing the area near her family’s home with search dogs. The family lives right on the Missouri River about 60 miles from Sidney.

Searchers today confirmed that the tracks belonging to Leinen led from the island, to the main channel of the river and onto ice, before disappearing near an open section of water, Baisch said.

Personnel from the Richland County and Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Offices, the Poplar Police Department, the Fort Peck Tribal Police, the Poplar Volunteer Fire Department, Sidney Volunteer Fire Department and the U.S. Border Patrol assisted with the search.

Aerial support was provided by Dallas O’Conner from Poplar and Bryan Ligon of Lambert.
