Family seeking answers as pregnant teen remains missing after two weeks

The search continues for a pregnant teenager who has been missing for weeks.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says Iyana Sawyer was last seen leaving Terry Parker High School December 19. The campus captured the 16-year-old on surveillance video.

The teen is seen carrying what appears to be two bags.

First Coast News reached-out to Iyana’s family. Her aunt, Margie Mobley, declined to speak on-camera but said the teen is five months pregnant and has never run from home before. Mobley added in a text message that the family is "spending time surrounded [by each other]."

Mom of missing girl's friend: Heartbroken son wants 16-year-old found safe

As investigators continued to dig through a landfill Wednesday in what sources said is a search connected to the disappearance of a pregnant teenager, a woman who knows the girl said she is becoming more concerned with each passing day.

Iyana Sawyer, 16, has been missing for 29 days with no trace as to where she could be. She was five months pregnant the last time she was spotted Dec. 19 on surveillance video leaving Terry Parker High School.

Sawyer's sister came home from school that day, but Iyana was not with her and has not been seen since.

Investigators began searching Tuesday at a landfill on Otis Road north of Baldwin for evidence in “an active case.” Sources said that case is Iyana's disappearance.

Prosecutors: Uncle is suspect in pregnant Jacksonville teen's disappearance

Prosecutors say the uncle of Iyana Sawyer, a missing Jacksonville pregnant teen is considered a suspect in her disappearance.

Sawyer's uncle, Johnathan Quiles, is suspected of impregnating her, prosecutors said in court Thursday morning.

The lawyer for the teen’s family says he is communicating directly with the sheriff and “the family is still praying and holding out hope Iyana is found alive.”

Multiple sources tell Action News Jax they believe the teen's body is in the landfill on Otis Road.

JSO said it is still treating her disappearance as a missing person's case.

Missing pregnant teen’s jailed uncle now a suspect in her Jacksonville disappearance

The uncle of a pregnant 16-year-old Terry Parker High School student who has been missing since Dec. 19 is now a suspect in her disappearance, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

The announcement was made Thursday morning at a court hearing for 33-year-old Johnathan Joyco Quiles of Jacksonville, State Attorney’s Office spokesman David Chapman said. He was arrested Jan. 8 on a charge of sexual battery of another girl, according to his arrest warrant.

Chapman said that at a hearing requesting a bond reduction, the prosecutor handling the case in open court said Quiles is a suspect in the disappearance and impregnation of Iyana Sawyer. The request was denied, court records show, and Quiles remains jailed with bail set at $250,000.

Sawyer, who was about five months pregnant, was last seen Dec. 19 at her Arlington school. In recent weeks police had swarmed around a landfill on Otis Road in the Baldwin area with news stations reporting it was for the teen, but the Sheriff’s Office would only say they were “following up an investigative lead in an active case.” And when Quiles was arrested, the Sheriff’s Office said that case did not have anything to do with his niece’s disappearance.

According to the arrest warrant, the victim was 14 when the sexual battery occurred in late 2017 while she was at the suspect’s home baby-sitting his 3-year-old daughter.

Quiles’ arrest report shows the case also was routed to the special assault unit, homicide and missing persons.

    Ugh. :(
    A few more details here:

Action News Jax sources: Uncle confesses to involvement in missing pregnant teen's disappearance

Action News Jax sources say pregnant teen Iyana Sawyer was murdered and that Iyana Sawyer’s uncle, Johnathan Quiles, confessed to his involvement in her disappearance.

In the weeks after Iyana Sawyer’s disappearance, Sky Action News Jax was over the scene as investigators searched the business where the teen’s uncle worked.

Action News Jax sources confirm investigators are looking into other people who may be connected to Iyana Sawyer’s disappearance.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said they are no longer searching a landfill located on Otis Road.

Action News Jax sources confirm text books from Terry Parker High School were found in the landfill where JSO had been searching for weeks.

I hadn’t seen this article yet. Thank you @SheWhoMustNotBeNamed , this child is from the neighborhood I live in, my grand daughter attends this high school. I wonder why they didn’t do a search of his job site before now if they thought he (the uncle) was a suspect,
the property of his employer is a very large property of acres of junk vehicles. I can’t remember if they have a auto crushing device on the property or not for after the cars are completely stripped down of their parts. If this property becomes a crime scene it would only make since that it was an employee because customers are not allowed drive into the property or to carry anything big onto the property such as large tool boxes and the small tool boxes are inspected upon entry and exit of the property.
But one thing is for sure, if there was anyone else involved at all there will be record of it because you have to show photo I.D. Before you enter the business property. And check out as you leave.
Sad sad story... prayers for this childs family and may the person/Persons responsible in any way face the highest punishment allowable.

I understand WANTING to have hope. But man. A family member admitted to killing her. Books from her school were found in the area of the landfill they were searching. That’s rough. I hope they are able to find her so her family can have answers and peace.

Johnathan Quiles facing murder charges, suspect in pregnant Jacksonville teen's disappearance

Wednesday, new documents were released related to the only named suspect in Iyana Sawyer’s disappearance case, Johnathan Quiles.

Quiles is in jail on an unrelated sexual battery charge: a new report reveals disturbing details about a female accusing Quiles of sexual battery.

The report says she told police when the sexual relationship began, Quiles told her she could “not tell anyone that he was kissing her, or he would get in trouble.”

It’s not clear how old the victim is, since that information is redacted.

The report also says when the victim found out she was pregnant and told Quiles, he “punched her hard in the face. The victim stated the suspect gave her 10 brownish /green pills and told her to take them” because the pills would “cause her to have an abortion.”

UPDATE 7/18/2019 - The State Attorney's Office has charged Johnathan Quiles with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of sexual battery.

Quiles is the sole suspect in a case involving missing pregnant teen, Iyana Sawyer.

Attorney John M. Phillips, the lawyer for Kimberly Mobley, the mother of Iyana Sawyer, and the Mobley/Sawyer family, released the following statement:

"The family and our office met with the State Attorney today and have been anxiously awaiting today’s news. Johnathan Quiles has been indicted for the murder of Iyana Sawyer and her unborn child. It’s been months of rumors and speculation, hoping she’d come home and then landfill searches and the worst days a family could ever live through. They still do not have the answers they seek because too many people associated with the case are talking about the case and justice starts with a conviction.

"We are communicating directly with the State Attorney’s Office and Sheriff’s Office about the case and appreciate their dedicated service, including searching through landfills. The family has no further comment at this time.

"Ms. Mobley asks for prayer, peace and privacy."

UPDATE 7/19/2019 - Johnathan Quiles, the sole suspect in the disappearance of Iyana Sawyer, a missing pregnant teen, appeared in court Friday morning for the first time after being indicted for murder.

State calls for the death penalty for man accused of killing pregnant niece

On Thursday morning, Jonathan Quiles, the man accused of killing his pregnant teenage niece may face the death penalty.

Quiles pleaded not guilty, but the state said it plans to ask for the death penalty during his trial.

He is the sole suspect in the disappearance of Iyana Sawyer, and during his arraignment for first-degree murder charges, he walked into the courtroom with his hands shackled together.

In July, Action News Jax news told you the State Attorney’s Office charged Quiles with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of sexual battery.

On the other side of the room the prosecutor stood up and told the judge based on the evidence in the case the state would seek the death penalty.

Four months ago Action News Jax went through hours of interrogation video where they found evidence the two were in a relationship together.

They also said Sawyer wrote about her pregnancy in her diary and claims Quiles was upset about it, but he denied any inappropriate relationship with his niece.

The 16-year-old disappeared in December while she was 5 months pregnant.

Body cam footage shows uncle of missing pregnant Terry Parker teen questioned about niece's disappearance, arrested

More than two hours of body camera footage was released on Friday showing officers questioning and arresting accused killer Johnathan Quiles.

Quiles, 33, is accused of murdering his pregnant 16-year-old niece, Iyana Sawyer. Sawyer was last seen leaving Terry Parker High School on Dec. 19. She was five months pregnant at the time. Her body hasn't been found.

The video was taken more than a week after she disappeared, on Dec. 27. Officers can be heard questioning Quiles about the last time he and his wife saw Sawyer.

"If we knew where she was at, we would have been the first ones to grab her a** and bring her over, " Quiles said to the officer.

His wife also responded that the last time she saw Swayer was the last week of November.

When asked if she has ever tried running away before, Quiles tells the officer about the advice he gave her when she reportedly wanted to leave home.

"Has she ever done this before?" the officer asks. "Ever gone missing before."

"No, like I told the other officer over there, she complained, you know, always, both of them, always complained [redacted]," Quiles said. "... I was like, 'look, first of all, your mom is your mom. You know what I'm saying? Your mom loves the hell out of you no matter what. Is she the best mom? Not at all ... We only get one ... Your situation is f**cking awesome compared to my situation growing up, you know what I mean. I had a real rough one growing up. Just, you know, stay focused in school.'"

New evidence provided to lawyers for uncle charged in pregnant teen's death

The State Attorney's Office has provided defense lawyers with a large amount of evidence gathered in the case against the Jacksonville man suspected of impregnating his teenage niece and indicted on first-degree murder charges in the deaths of the girl and her unborn baby.

Johnathan Quiles has been in jail since January on a felony sexual battery charge related to a different victim, who is also a relative.

Quiles was indicted in July on murder charges in the deaths of Iyana Sawyer, who was five months pregnant when she went missing just before Christmas, and her unborn child. He was also indicted on a sexual battery charge.

The six-page summary provided by the State Attorney's Office includes two discs of information that came from a witness who was wearing a wire, indicating that the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office got a warrant to record a conversation with Quiles. It’s unknown who wore the wire and when, but JSO has used jail informants in several high-profile murder investigations, including the Michael Haim case.

Other items shared with the defense included a photo of Quiles with a gun, Florida Department of Law Enforcement analysis of the evidence, the journals that Sawyer kept and the search warrant for the Otis Road landfill. The Sheriff's Office searched that landfill for weeks, but Sawyer’s body has not been recovered.

According to the murder indictment, Quiles shot Sawyer shortly after she left Terry Parker High School in December.
