Family seeking answers as pregnant teen remains missing after two weeks

The search continues for a pregnant teenager who has been missing for weeks.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office says Iyana Sawyer was last seen leaving Terry Parker High School December 19. The campus captured the 16-year-old on surveillance video.

The teen is seen carrying what appears to be two bags.

First Coast News reached-out to Iyana’s family. Her aunt, Margie Mobley, declined to speak on-camera but said the teen is five months pregnant and has never run from home before. Mobley added in a text message that the family is "spending time surrounded [by each other]."

Mom of missing girl's friend: Heartbroken son wants 16-year-old found safe

As investigators continued to dig through a landfill Wednesday in what sources said is a search connected to the disappearance of a pregnant teenager, a woman who knows the girl said she is becoming more concerned with each passing day.

Iyana Sawyer, 16, has been missing for 29 days with no trace as to where she could be. She was five months pregnant the last time she was spotted Dec. 19 on surveillance video leaving Terry Parker High School.

Sawyer's sister came home from school that day, but Iyana was not with her and has not been seen since.

Investigators began searching Tuesday at a landfill on Otis Road north of Baldwin for evidence in “an active case.” Sources said that case is Iyana's disappearance.

Prosecutors: Uncle is suspect in pregnant Jacksonville teen's disappearance

Prosecutors say the uncle of Iyana Sawyer, a missing Jacksonville pregnant teen is considered a suspect in her disappearance.

Sawyer's uncle, Johnathan Quiles, is suspected of impregnating her, prosecutors said in court Thursday morning.

The lawyer for the teen’s family says he is communicating directly with the sheriff and “the family is still praying and holding out hope Iyana is found alive.”

Multiple sources tell Action News Jax they believe the teen's body is in the landfill on Otis Road.

JSO said it is still treating her disappearance as a missing person's case.

Missing pregnant teen’s jailed uncle now a suspect in her Jacksonville disappearance

The uncle of a pregnant 16-year-old Terry Parker High School student who has been missing since Dec. 19 is now a suspect in her disappearance, according to the State Attorney’s Office.

The announcement was made Thursday morning at a court hearing for 33-year-old Johnathan Joyco Quiles of Jacksonville, State Attorney’s Office spokesman David Chapman said. He was arrested Jan. 8 on a charge of sexual battery of another girl, according to his arrest warrant.

Chapman said that at a hearing requesting a bond reduction, the prosecutor handling the case in open court said Quiles is a suspect in the disappearance and impregnation of Iyana Sawyer. The request was denied, court records show, and Quiles remains jailed with bail set at $250,000.

Sawyer, who was about five months pregnant, was last seen Dec. 19 at her Arlington school. In recent weeks police had swarmed around a landfill on Otis Road in the Baldwin area with news stations reporting it was for the teen, but the Sheriff’s Office would only say they were “following up an investigative lead in an active case.” And when Quiles was arrested, the Sheriff’s Office said that case did not have anything to do with his niece’s disappearance.

According to the arrest warrant, the victim was 14 when the sexual battery occurred in late 2017 while she was at the suspect’s home baby-sitting his 3-year-old daughter.

Quiles’ arrest report shows the case also was routed to the special assault unit, homicide and missing persons.

    Ugh. :(
    A few more details here:

Action News Jax sources: Uncle confesses to involvement in missing pregnant teen's disappearance

Action News Jax sources say pregnant teen Iyana Sawyer was murdered and that Iyana Sawyer’s uncle, Johnathan Quiles, confessed to his involvement in her disappearance.

In the weeks after Iyana Sawyer’s disappearance, Sky Action News Jax was over the scene as investigators searched the business where the teen’s uncle worked.

Action News Jax sources confirm investigators are looking into other people who may be connected to Iyana Sawyer’s disappearance.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said they are no longer searching a landfill located on Otis Road.

Action News Jax sources confirm text books from Terry Parker High School were found in the landfill where JSO had been searching for weeks.

I hadn’t seen this article yet. Thank you @SheWhoMustNotBeNamed , this child is from the neighborhood I live in, my grand daughter attends this high school. I wonder why they didn’t do a search of his job site before now if they thought he (the uncle) was a suspect,
the property of his employer is a very large property of acres of junk vehicles. I can’t remember if they have a auto crushing device on the property or not for after the cars are completely stripped down of their parts. If this property becomes a crime scene it would only make since that it was an employee because customers are not allowed drive into the property or to carry anything big onto the property such as large tool boxes and the small tool boxes are inspected upon entry and exit of the property.
But one thing is for sure, if there was anyone else involved at all there will be record of it because you have to show photo I.D. Before you enter the business property. And check out as you leave.
Sad sad story... prayers for this childs family and may the person/Persons responsible in any way face the highest punishment allowable.

I understand WANTING to have hope. But man. A family member admitted to killing her. Books from her school were found in the area of the landfill they were searching. That’s rough. I hope they are able to find her so her family can have answers and peace.
