ON June 26, 1973, 19 year old Jan Andre Cotta was last seen by her 17 year old brother, Brian, and a friend around 11:30 PM-12:00 AM. She was seen inside a barn tack house towards the back of her family's property, located in the Allenwood section of Wall Township, New Jersey, a place not too far from the shore of the Atlantic Ocean. A vehicle was seen driving up the driveway of the Cotta residence, towards the barn at the rear of the property, where Jan was last sighted by her brother. A family member remembered the car belonged the someone Jan knew, but the car did not at all seem suspicious.
Later on, a vehicle was heard driving away from the residence. Afterwards, Jan Cotta was missing, and has not been seen since. Most importantly, she was 5 to 7 months pregnant at the time she vanished.

    Update as of 7/1/2014
An article ran from NJ.com: True Jersey was recently ran with updates on recent developments in Jan's case. It is still a very active investigation, with authorities following up on leads from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Florida. Advanced technology is being used to compare Jan's genetics to a database called CODIS, which houses the cases of unidentified human remains that have been uncovered for years. They are looking for a match just in case Jan is one of those who have been found, but have not had their identity figured out. There has been much involvement from a variety of organizations. Besides the Wall Township Police Department, the Monmouth Prosecutor's office, FBI, U.S. Secret Service, New Jersey State Police and National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have become involved in the search.

Perhaps the most interesting development in the case is a name investigators have released. They are trying to identify and individual by the name of Eric Shore (possibly not the correct spelling). He was 40 years-old at the time of Jan's disappearance, and was from Staten Island or Long Island. His girlfriend at the time was reported to have worked as a hairdresser in Deal. It is unknown why he is a subject of interest, but he seems to hold vital information into the disappearance of Jan Cotta.

    http://deaniepeters-missingangels.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/jan-andre-cotta-missing-40-years.html

Jan has several physical problems, including a lazy eye, a club foot, asthma and epilepsy. Despite this, she became a successful equestrienne.

According to someone commenting on an article about Jan, she was living or staying in the tack room at the time (not uncommon for this to happen in horsey circles). That would explain why she was in the tack room at such a late hour... the last sighting of Jan, by her brother and his friends, was after midnight.

Before she vanished, Jan wrote a 'letter to God' wherein she talked about her baby's father but didn't name him (his identity was and still is a mystery). She also said she was giving her three most beloved horses to a neighbour. It's thought she may have left voluntarily at first, but her family says she never would have dropped contact with them.

Her family says Jan was never in any trouble, but was somewhat naive, inferring that she could have been easily led astray.

Weirdly. the same neighbour who was given her horses later had someone abandon a newborn infant by their letter box, but the baby wasn't Jan's.

Two years after Jan vanished and not very far from the Cotta's property, another girl went missing from a relative's horse stables -- Edna Christine Throne. who vanished on June 24, 1975 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

^ Just had to focus on this a moment... who WAS this guy and WHY is he a 'subject of interest'?

Could he be a suspect? If so, could he also be a suspect in the case of Edna Thorne? Maybe someone was targetting young horsey women in the area...

    Missing Person – Jan Cotta
    June 20, 2014

    June 20, 2014

    Press Release
Chief Robert L. Brice reports the following occurrences:

Wall Township – Jane Andre Cotta was 19 years old and pregnant when her younger brother and one of his friends saw her inside a barn tack house on her family’s property in the Allenwood section of Wall.

That moment in 1973 was the last time anyone in her family saw the avid equestrian and oldest of eight children.

Once again, police are asking for the public’s help in solving the nearly 41-year old missing person mystery. The investigation conducted by local, county, state and federal law enforcement as well as private investigators included roughly 260 interviews in five states. Now, Wall Township PBA Local #234 and Crime Stoppers are offering a reward totaling up to $10,000 for positive information leading to the recovery of missing person Jan Andre Cotta, her remains or the arrest of the person responsible for her disappearance.

Cotta and her family had lived in Spring Lake Heights before they moved to Wall, where Cotta began participating in the 4-H Club. In 1971, she was elected vice president of the Jumping Brook Riders 4-H Club.

Horses were her passion. She rode for pleasure, was involved in competitions, and went to training facilities. She attended the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute in Leesburg, Virginia, and the Princeton Riding Academy. She provided riding lessons at her family’s property on Ridgewood Road.

Cotta was last seen by her brother, Brian Cotta, and his friend between 11:30 p.m. and midnight on June 26, 1973.

The next day, Dorothy Cotta reported her daughter missing. An investigation into the disappearance was opened, and there was a follow-up by police in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.

Since 2004, several members of the Wall Township Police Department have assisted with the investigation. In addition, the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, New Jersey State Police, U.S. Secret Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children assisted.

Between the years 2004 – 2006, investigators conducted about 250 interviews in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Florida. However, investigators are determined to identify anyone else who may have knowledge about Cotta during the time of her disappearance. In addition, investigators are still trying to identify a subject by the name of Eric Shore (proper spelling unknown). Shore was reported to be approximately 40 years old at the time of her disappearance and from Staten Island or Long Island. It was also reported that his girlfriend at the time was employed as a hairdresser in Deal, New Jersey.

The latest investigation incorporated advanced technology, including computer searches, age progression and a DNA comparison of Cotta’s genetic makeup to those of unidentified remains. That search was done using CODIS, the Combined DNA Index System, and a nationwide law enforcement database.

At the time of her disappearance, Cotta was about 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighed about 118 pounds, and had brown hair, blue eyes and a mole near the left side of her mouth. She was last seen wearing blue Land Lubbers jeans, a white shirt with a blue design on it and brown loafers. She was carrying a round tweed purse.

Citizens with information about this investigation may contact Monmouth County Crime Stoppers confidential telephone tip-line by calling 1-800-671-4400; text “MONMOUTH” plus their tip to 274637; or, email a tip via the website at www.monmouthcountycrimestoppers.com.

TIPS: Anyone having information should contact 1-800-THE-LOST or the Wall Township Police Department (New Jersey) 1-732-449-4500

    From The Charley Project:

Cotta was last seen inside a barn tack house on her family's property in the Allenwood section of Wall Township, New Jersey on June 26, 1973. Her brother and a friend saw her sometime between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. A vehicle was heard driving away from the farm and afterwards, Cotta was discovered to be missing. She has never been heard from again.

Cotta has seven siblings and is described as an avid equestrian who won awards in riding competitions. She was active in the 4-H Club and also attended riding classes at the Morven Park International Equestrian Institute in Leesburg, Virginia and the Princeton Riding Academy. She wasn't involved with drugs and didn't drink alcohol at the time of her disappearance. The identity of her unborn baby's father is unknown. Cotta wrote a letter to God before she went missing and referred to the baby's father, but she didn't say what his name was. In the letter, she stated she was giving three of her favorite horses to a friend. Authorities believe she left of her own accord, at least initially.

In August 1973, a newborn baby was found abandoned in a mailbox on a horse farm in Jefferson Township, New Jersey. The farm belonged to the friend Cotta gave her horses to, and the baby was born around the same time Cotta's baby was due. Due to these circumstances there was speculation that the child was hers, but DNA tests disproved this theory.

Cotta's parents both died in the years following her disappearance, but her siblings are still searching for her. Her case remains unsolved.

Thoughts? According to the Charley Project, America's Most Wanted profiled Jan Cotta's disappearance, although I don't know if they mean on the show itself or just the website. A 2014 article mentioned this is still an active case, and investigators are using new technology to try to solve it. There is also now a $10,000 reward being offered.

Reward in 1973 NJ missing persons case
By Dianne DeOliveira July 7, 2014 5:00 AM

Monmouth County Crime Stoppers and Wall Township PBA Local 234 recently announced, on the anniversary of the disappearance of Jan Andrea Cotta, that the agencies were offering up to a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the 41-year-old case.

Investigating Detective Sgt. Joseph Wilbert with the Wall Township Police Department said the 19-year-old woman disappeared from her property in the Allenwood section of the township in 1973.

Authorities are seeking a “person of interest” in the case. Wilbert said Eric Shore of New York knew the victim.

“We are attempting to locate him; he is not a suspect,” said Wilbert, adding that Shore may have information about Jan Cotta from around the time of her disappearance.

Shore’s girlfriend at the time was employed as a hairdresser in Deal.

The Cotta family went to police in 2004 seeking to have the case investigated further. Wilbert said since then, authorities have concluded nearly 300 interviews.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact Monmouth County Crime Stoppers’ confidential telephone tip line by calling 1-800-671-4400. Tips also can be texted to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword MONMOUTH, or emailed to monmouthcountycrimestoppers.com. In addition, information can be provided to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).
