Sheriff: Missing 13-year-old daughter's life in danger after parents found slain in NW. Wis. home

    Tip Line: 1-855-744-3879 / jaymetips@co.barron.wi.us

A mother and father are dead and their 13-year-old daughter is missing from the family's home in northwestern Wisconsin, where authorities are urgently turning to the public in hopes of finding the young teen before harm comes to her.

A 911 call to the Barron County Sheriff's Office shortly before 1 a.m. Monday brought deputies to a home in the 1200 block of Hwy. 8, just west of the city of Barron, where they located the man and woman.

Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said that while "gunshots are involved" in the deaths, he's not ready to say more about the circumstances inside the home, located roughly 80 miles northeast of the Twin Cities.

Fitzgerald also did not disclose the parents' names, but public records confirm they are Denise J. Closs, 46, and James M. Closs, 56.

Daughter Jayme Closs "is missing from the residence" and her life "is considered endangered," he said.

"We've searched the area around the residence," Fitzgerald said in an on-camera interview with reporters outside his office. "We've used drones, we've used infrared. We've searched [her] school and met with her friends."

Fitzgerald said the case is "taking a toll" on the men and women in his office under such urgent circumstances.

"We're tired, we have families, but we are pushing through that," he said. "It's frustrating when we don't have a lead. That's why I'm begging and pleading with the public to help us share this [information]."

The sheriff said that the FBI, state investigators and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children are also assisting in this case.

The national center said early Monday afternoon that an Amber Alert has been issued in an effort to spread the word about Jayme's disappearance.

The center's notice about Jayme said she was taken from her home early Monday morning "likely with a gun."

Authorities have no suspect or vehicle information, the sheriff said, adding that Jayme is not considered a suspect.

Amber Alert: Teen missing, parents found dead in Barron, Wisconsin, home

Authorities searched Monday for a 13-year-old girl they believe is in danger after her parents were found dead in their western Wisconsin home.

"At the end of the day, I want a 13-year-old here safe and sound. That's our goal. That's our only goal right now," Fitzgerald said at a news briefing.

Investigators don't have any leads or suspects, but they have enlisted the help of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the FBI, which has agents who specialize in missing children cases, the sheriff said. He said Jayme is not considered a suspect in her parents' deaths.

Deputies searched the area around the family's home with drones and infrared equipment, but they didn't find any clues as to her whereabouts. Fitzgerald said investigators are frustrated they haven't developed any leads and asked for the public's help with any information about what could have happened to the girl.

Officers also were at Jayme's middle school talking with her friends and acquaintances, hoping to develop some leads, officials said.

An Amber Alert was issued Monday for Jayme, although it did not include information about a suspect or vehicle.

Amber Alert: Missing teen may have been spotted in Miami after parents found dead in Barron, Wisconsin, home

A 13-year-old girl missing from Wisconsin may have been sighted in Miami, Florida, police said.

    By Diane Pathieu
    Updated 31 mins ago
    BARRON, Wis. (WLS) --
A 13-year-old girl missing from Wisconsin may have been sighted in Miami, Florida, police said.

Miami police said someone fitting the description of Jayme Closs may have been spotted at a gas station there Monday afternoon. Police said the witness saw her with what they described as two well-dressed Middle Eastern men in their 30s and both had a beard.

They were seen driving a black Ford Explorer with Wisconsin license plate I60WER. Authorities stopped short of calling this a confirmed sighting.

Authorities began the search for Closs after her parents were found dead inside their home in Barron Wisconsin, about 90 miles northeast of Minneapolis.

Deputies went to the home after getting a 911 call at around 1 a.m. on Monday. The call came from the house, but no one was on the line. Detectives don't know who made the call.

The sheriff said they found the bodies of Closs' parents, who were later identified by the sheriff's department as 56-year-old James Closs and his 46-year-old wife, Denise Closs.

They searched the area around the family's home, but they did not find any clues as to where Jayme was. Authorities say she is not a suspect in her parent's murder, and they do believe she is in danger.

Jayme is described as 5-feet (1.5 meters) tall and 100 pounds (45 kilograms), with strawberry-blond hair and green eyes.

Investigators have enlisted the help of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the FBI, which has agents who specialize in missing children cases, Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    Q&A from press conference:

They are getting tips and following up on the tips.

911 call came from a cell phone at the residence. NO CONTACT was made with anyone on the line. No one was communicating with the dispatcher.

Actively researching the tip about the Miami sighting.

The FBI is assisting along with the department of criminal investigation.

Teams are still processing the scene. State crime lab is working. No comments on what may have taken place there.

Autopsies are currently being done. After 4pm may be able to release more results such as cause of death.

Main point is to bring Jayme home. "That's why I won't give out any other information" unless it's key to bringing her home.

Phones, social media, and all leads being checked.

Currently don't see a danger to the public. But keep eyes open.

    Questioned a lot of people.

Sunday afternoon at a family gathering may be the last official sighting outside of the home. Still following up and trying to tighten the timeline.

Don't see stuff like this is rural western Wisconsin. Thankful for the team working the case.

    Back at 4pm local time.

Hunt for missing Jayme Closs continues; Miami tip 'not credible,' authorities say

A tip from the Miami Police Department in Florida involving missing 13-year-old Jayme Closs from Barron County is “not credible,” Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said Tuesday at a news briefing.

Wisconsin authorities followed up on the tip, but found it “not credible,” Fitzgerald said Tuesday.

UPDATE: Authorities receive 200+ tips in case of missing 13-year-old

Authorities in Barron County say they have no new leads in the case of a missing 13-year-old girl.

The Barron County Sheriff’s Office says it has received more than 200 tips about Jayme Closs’s disappearance.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said during Tuesday’s news conference that there was a shooting at the house, but he won’t reveal a cause of death until autopsies are completed. Those autopsies are scheduled for Wednesday.

“We’re begging, we’re asking people to look out for behavioral changes in people that you don’t really know that may have been involved in this crime,” said Fitzgerald. “That’s the information we need and that’s why were over 200 tips which is a great source but we need those tips to come in.”

The Latest: Grandad says nothing amiss before disappearance

The grandfather of a Wisconsin teenager who has been missing since her parents were found dead in their home says nothing seemed amiss at a family gathering she and her mother attended the day before her disappearance.

Robert Naiberg told The Associated Press on Tuesday that 13-year-old Jayme Closs “was quiet as always” on Sunday at his grandson’s birthday party.

Naiberg is the father of Jayme’s mother, 46-year-old Denise Closs, who was found dead along with Jayme’s father, 56-year-old James Closs, at around 1 a.m. Monday in their home in the western Wisconsin town of Barron. The authorities are searching for Jayme, who isn’t a suspect in her parents’ deaths.

Naiberg says his daughter was a “thoughtful person” who brought “a little gift for everybody” at the party. He says Jayme’s father was working at the time of the party.

Family, friends share stories of who Jayme Closs is

One of the best things we can do to bring Jayme home is continue to talk about her, share photos about her and learn about who she is.

Some of Closs’ family was at a press conference on Tuesday. Jayme’s aunt said, “Jayme is the sweetest little girl, she wouldn’t hurt a soul.”

Superintendent of the Barron School District Diane Tremblay echoed that sentiment saying Jayme is a loyal friend who loves to dance. Jayme is also a runner on the Riverview Middle School cross country team.

Perhaps the person who is most telling of Jayme’s personality is Jayme herself. Her superintendent had this story to share: “A teacher just recently shared this with me about Jayme. Jayme wrote on one of her assignments, in response to the question, what would you do if you were given a million dollars? She said feed the hungry and give the rest to the poor.”

Jayme’s friend Ashlea said she knows the entire Closs family well. Her parents worked with Jayme’s parents. She said she doesn’t understand why anyone would harm them.

“I don’t think that there was anybody that would of been against them because they were such nice people, and I don’t think anybody would want to hurt them,” Ashlea said.

Ashlea also said whoever has her should give her back because there’s a lot of people who really love her and don’t want to see anything bad happen to her.

Jayme Closs disappearance: What we know, Day 3

An army of investigators more than 100 strong is embarking on Day 3 of the search for a western Wisconsin 13-year-old feared abducted after her parents were murdered in their house outside the city of Barron, according to NBC affiliate KARE11.

When investigators entered the home off Highway 8 they found the bodies of James and Denise Closs, but there was no sign of their daughter Jayme. Agents from the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations and the Milwaukee branch of the FBI have joined the effort but still, no announced developments in the search for the missing teen.

Barron County Sheriff's officials may release more information Wednesday on how Jayme's parents James and Denise died. Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald has said that bullet casings were found in the home, but has not released an official cause of death for the couple.

FBI Takes Lead In Search Of Jayme Closs, 13

The search for 13-year-old Wisconsin girl Jayme Closs has entered its third day, and the FBI has taken the lead in investigating her parents' mysterious death and her disappearance.

Closs is considered "endangered" and is not a suspect in the killing of her parents, the Barron County Sheriff's Department said. "We're over 200 tips, which is a great source, but we need those tips to come in," Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said.

Local authorities in partnership with the FBI and Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation are continuing their investigation. They've released new photos of Closs, deployed K9 officers, used thermal sensors and have conducted a massive foot and door-to-door search.

According to a Chicago Tribune report, neighbors Tom and Joan Smrekar woke up early that morning to the sound of two gunshots, only seconds apart at 12:31 a.m. They were interviewed by the FBI later on Monday.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told Fox 9 he is skeptical about the reported sighting in Miami. His office is following it up as a tip, but doubts the timing of it all. Fitzgerald said that Closs' alleged sighting in Miami was about 15 hours after the police responded to her home. The drive time from Wisconsin to Miami is about 26 hours according to Google Maps.

:welcome: to the group, @FoolInSpecs !

Years back I had a penpal named Cheryl. When she got older, she married and had kids and her oldest daughter had a crush on a local handyman, who Cheryl let stay at their house. He killed Cheryl and took off with her very frightened daughter! Thankfully, her daughter was found safe. I am hoping Jayme will be found safe as well!

ETA: Adding this piece that I wrote about Cheryl at another site years ago. I'd like to memorialize Cheryl here, too.

"An arrest warrant on a charge of aggravated sexual assault was issued Tuesday for Daniel Joseph Griffin, 34, sought by police in connection with the murder Monday of Sheri Lynn Duggan, according to a report by FOX affiliate KDFW-TV.

Investigators believe Duggan's eldest daughter, Christina Harrison, 19, was with the suspect and may have been kidnapped, according a report in the Tyler Morning Telegraph." <snipped> http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,219738,00.html

This POS was living at Cheryl's home in a trailer on the property. After the murder, the family learned that he was on parole. He was also Christina's boyfriend, but she did NOT leave with him willingly and thankfully LE caught up with them and Christina was not harmed.

FYI, she spelled her nickname "Cheri", not Sheri. :)

Jayme Closs was likely in home when parents were killed, sheriff says

A missing 13-year-old girl who authorities say was taken from her Wisconsin house was believed to be in the home when her mother and father were shot dead, the local sheriff told reporters Wednesday.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for Jayme Closs after the bodies of her parents, James and Denise Closs, were found shot dead early Monday at their home in Barron.

"We believe she is still in danger," Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said of missing teen.

Jayme was taken from her home early Monday morning by an unknown person who likely had a gun, according to the FBI office in Milwaukee.

Autopsies were performed Wednesday and their deaths were ruled homicides, the sheriff said at the news conference Wednesday.

It's unclear if the attack was random or targeted, he added.

"We believe Jayme was home based on the evidence in our case -- some of it from that 911 call, and some of it is still part of the active investigation and we're not able to comment on why we believe that," he said at Wednesday's news conference.

Police responded to the home about 4 minutes after that call to 911 ended, Fitzgerald said.

By the time authorities arrived, Jayme was gone.

Authorities have received over 400 tips in the search for Jayme, but so far there have been no credible sightings, the sheriff said Wednesday.

Family members, friends and neighbors gathered at a candlelight vigil Tuesday night, praying for the safe return of the young girl who has been described as sweet and shy.

"We will bring Jayme home," the sheriff vowed. "Tips need to continue. If anybody has information, we ask you to call our tip line at 855-744-3879."
