Bail lowered for man accused of helping to hide Jessica Heeringa's body

Muskegon County judge on Friday substantially lowered the bail bond of Kevin Lavern Bluhm, who's accused of helping to dispose of the still-missing body of Jessica Heeringa after she allegedly was murdered.

Jefferey Thomas Willis - Bluhm's cousin -- has been charged with murdering Heeringa, while Bluhm has been charged as an accessory after the fact in the case. In addition to the high-profile Heeringa case, Willis has also been charged with the murder of Rebekah Bletsch, abduction of a 16-year-old girl and several pornography-related charges.

Both men have been in custody at the Muskegon County Jail awaiting trials.

Muskegon County Circuit Court Judge William C. Marietti reduced Bluhm's bond from $250,000 to $150,000 at a hearing Friday morning, April 7. If Bluhm posts bail, he will be subject to monitoring by GPS tether, Marietti said.

Jeffrey Willis' cousin pleads no contest in Jessica Heeringa case

Kevin Bluhm made an unscheduled appearance in court Monday morning and pleaded no contest ahead of his trial Tuesday, Nov. 28.

Bluhm is the cousin of convicted murderer, Jeffrey Willis, and he is charged with one felony count of accessory after the fact in connection to the Jessica Heeringa investigation.

A no contest plea is not an admission of guilt but is treated the same at sentencing.

The felony is punishable by up to five years in prison, but Bluhm's calculated sentence guidelines on the charge are zero to nine-months in jail.

"He is probably going to receive a time served sentence," said Hilson.

Members of the Heeringa family.were informed of the possible plea last week.

The judge set Bluhm's sentencing for Jan. 9.

The judge told Bluhm if Jeffrey Willis is acquitted, he would allow Bluhm to withdraw the no contest plea.

Jessica Heeringa was working alone at a gas station in Norton Shores, Michigan on April 26, 2013, when she disappeared. A witness told police he saw the 25-year-old mother being forced into a silver Chrysler minivan. Investigators found Jessica's cell phone, keys and purse inside the store. In September 2016, officials charged Jeffrey Willis, 46, with abduction and murder in relation to Jessica’s case; police told Dateline his trial date is expected to be set for Spring of 2018. He has pleaded not guilty. Willis still faces charges for the April 2016 abduction of a teenager who ended up escaping. Upon escaping, that victim led police to a van where, according to court testimony, investigators found bondage items and lists of women’s name and addresses. According to NBC affiliate WOOD-TV, investigators said they also found a file labeled “VICS” (short for victims) that contained a folder labeled with Rebekah Bletsch’s initials and a code for the date of her death. In November 2017, Willis was convicted of first-degree premeditated murder and felony firearm in connection to Rebekah’s 2014 shooting death. Police told WOOD-TV there was also a file bearing Jessica’s initials on Willis’s computer. On November 27, 2017 Willis’s cousin Kevin Bluhm pleaded no contest to being an accessory after the fact in Jessica’s murder. Bluhm has been jailed since September 2016 on the charge. Jessica’s body has not been found. Police told Dateline they continue to do searches but have no leads as to her location. If you have any information regarding Jessica’s case, please call the Norton Shores Police Department at (231) 733-2691 or the Silent Observer at (231) 722-7463.

Kevin Bluhm walks free for his role in Jessica Heeringa's murder

Jeffrey Willis' cousin, Kevin Bluhm, was to be set free Tuesday following sentencing for his involvement in the murder of Jessica Heeringa.

But he won't be free from prying eyes, as he will be required to wear an electronic GPS tether to monitor his whereabouts for at least a year.

Bluhm, 49, was sentenced Jan. 9 by Muskegon County Circuit Judge William C. Marietti to time he has already served in the Muskegon County Jail, where he has been lodged since Sept. 20, 2016.

Bluhm pleaded no contest on Nov. 27, 2017, to being an accessory after the fact in the murder of Heeringa, who disappeared in April 2013 from her night job at a Norton Shores gas station. Willis has been charged in her murder, and the trial is scheduled for early March.
