Deputies believe missing mom 'not alive'; suspect in custody

YULEE, Fla. - Nassau County deputies who have been searching for a missing mother who disappeared over a week ago have reason to believe she is not alive and have a suspect in custody, Sheriff Bill Leeper announced Tuesday afternoon.

The foreboding update came just hours before a Tuesday evening vigil organized by Joleen Cummings' friends and loved ones.
Leeper declined to say what evidence investigators had found that led them to believe Cummings is no longer alive, but said that a woman, 50-year-old Jennifer Sybert, was arrested Tuesday morning and is considered a suspect in Cummings' disappearance.

Sybert, whose real name is Kimberly Kessler, is charged with car theft and is being held on $500,000 bond. Leeper said she was the last person to see Cummings, who was reported missing May 14 after she did not show up the day before to pick up her three children from her ex-husband.

The 34-year-old mother was last seen leaving work at Tangles Hair Salon on State Road 200 on May 12. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Cummings' phone was last used on an outgoing call midafternoon May 12.

Woman at center of Joleen Cummings' disappearance was reported missing in 2004

The woman being held in connection with the disappearance of 34-year-old Joleen Cummings was reported as a missing person in Pennsylvania more than a decade ago.

Website Pennsylvania Missing stated Kimberly Kessler was reported missing from Butler, Pennsylvania in July 2004.

Nassau County Sheriff’s Office arrested a woman going by the name of Jennifer Sybert after the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office found her at a truck stop on May 16, where she was believed to be living out of her car, a black Kia.

Investigators believe this woman may actually be Kimberly Kessler. The woman worked at Tangles Salon, where Cummings worked, for about a month and is believed to be the last person to see Cummings, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office said.

Kessler/Sybert is being charged with grand theft auto at this time after video surveillance footage showed her exiting Cummings’ Ford Expedition at a Home Depot, the sheriff’s office said.

Jennifer Sybert: 5 things we know about suspect in Nassau mom's disappearance

Sybert was seen on surveillance video parking Cummings' 2006 Ford Expedition around 1:17 a.m. Sunday, May 13.

Here is what we know about Sybert:

    1. Her real name is Kimberly Kessler. A grave has been found with the same name Kessler is alleged to have used as an alias.

Investigators then found that Sybert's real name is Kimberly Kessler. She is from Butler, Pennsylvania, and her birthday is May 9, 1968.

    2. Kimberly Kessler was reported missing in 2004.

Action News Jax found that a Kimberly Kessler, then age 35, was reported missing from Butler County, Pennsylvania, on July 4, 2004.

Leeper confirmed for Action News Jax that the person they have in custody is the Kimberly Kessler who was reported missing in 2004.

According to pennsylvaniamissing.org, Kessler "disappeared under suspicious circumstances." She also had another listed alias, Pamela Kleber/Kleiber.

    3. She faced federal charges.

She had been using a fake Social Security number and has been charged by the FBI with a federal offense of possession of a counterfeit passport.

    4. Sybert had been working at the same place as Cummings for a month.

Leeper said detectives showed up at Tangles May 15 at 10 a.m. to speak with Sybert, who was reportedly the last person to see Cummings. Sybert did not show up for work that day.

This is a new one! So a missing person comes up with a new name and as a suspect in a disappearance? Oh my gosh what is this woman been doing since 2004? I shudder to think.

Edward Dentzel who hosts a weekly podcast about missing persons was planning to do an episode on Kimberly a couple weeks ago, he was able to get in touch with Kimberly's mother. The conversation went bad, and this was the second only time this has happened. Kimberly's mother ended up hanging up on him.

Looking back on it he thinks Kimberly's mother most likely knew where her daughter was, and probably got worried that Edward might have been a cop trying to track her down.

This is so bizarre. First of all, I want to wipe the smug smile off her face in those pictures. Second of all, what were the "suspicious circumstances" behind her own "disappearance"? @Scorpio it does sound like her mom may have known where she was all along. Or maybe she got into contact with her at some point after the missing persons report was made. So she and Joleen had been coworkers for a month. What in the world happened.

So has she just been going around killing other women since 2004? If she is a serial killer, that is a very interesting victim profile she has.

I wonder if she initially went missing bc she killed someone and ran away? Sounds like her mom is covering for her.

Poor Joleen... if LE expects her to be dead, so sad...

    BUT

I wouldn’t be surprised if missing was literally “only” on the run...
It will make them to check a lot of missing unsolved cases... and that all over the place...

Jennifer Kesse comes to mind... disappeared in January 2006...

That is so sick... did you see how different she looked on her own missing person flyer.. ? She could have gone by as many missing women...

A lot now for LE to check.. I would wish that some cases get solved with this one in custody...

    Here's the suspect's trail:

At some point, Sybert assumed the identity of a 13-year-old girl who was killed in a car crash overseas and later buried in Pennsylvania, said Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper.

Leeper said Sybert, who's only been working at the salon for about a month, has been using a bogus Social Security number.

The I-TEAM found records of Sybert living in nine cities and four states including Florida. They are:

    • St. Augustine, Florida
    • St. Augustine Beach, Florida
    • St. Petersburg, Florida
    • Tallahassee, Florida
    • Mission, Kansas
    • Overland Park, Kansas
    • Shawnee Mission, Kansas
    • Rochester, Minnesota
    • Nashville, Tennessee

Thanks @Paradise for pointing me in the right direction to find this thread :)

Also thanks @Scorpio for posting the missing person flyer ive been looking for it :)

This is such an odd situation. Some of her former employer's from around here say she use to wear wigs all the time and try to alter her appearance and would explain it off as she was hiding out from an abusive ex!

This is a crazy situation and i pray there are not other victims at her hands! from 2004 until now is a long time to have been "missing" and or "on the run" from what ever she was hiding from! And a long time for her to have lured others to steal their identity to continue her "missing status"

Prayers for Joleen and her family. Especially her 3 babies for a speedy and possitive resolution.

Yeah, this is about as odd of a case as it can be! Have you seen anyone say what they thought might be a motive?

Ive only read alot of comments from local news stories. And what her formal employer's were saying about her being odd and one employer (a restraunt a couple of doors down from the salon they worked at) told the news station she was fired for arguing with his wife.
She sounds like a very disturbed individual!

Kimberly Kessler went missing in Pennsylvania 14 years before she turned up in Nassau County, Florida working in a beauty salon, where she is now the prime suspect in the disappearance of another hairstylist.
Authorities say that Kessler, who was using the name Jennifer Sybert in Florida, is suspected in the disappearance of Joleen Cummings, 34. Both women worked at the Tangles hair salon. Now in a strange twist, Joleen Cummings is the missing person, and Kessler has been found. The salon is located in Yulee, Florida. Tragically, Cummings is now presumed dead, although her whereabouts are unknown.

    1. Kessler Vanished on Independence Day From Pennsylvania 14 Years Ago

Kimberly Lee Kessler was reported missing on July 4, 2004 in Butler, Butler County Pennsylvania, according to a missing person’s poster for her. However, her family did not report her missing to authorities for eight years.
Trooper Jim Long told WPIX that authorities suspected she had disappeared voluntarily. “We did not expect this was a legit missing person,” Long said to the television station. “This person didn’t want to be found.” He told The Butler Eagle: “She wanted to be hidden from a paramour.”
The missing poster says she was 35 at the time she disappeared. She was described as 5 foot 3 inches to 5 foot 5 inches tall and 130 to 140 pounds with blue eyes and dyed red hair. Her distinguishing characteristics were described as pronounced varicose veins on both legs and a leg that was broken during childhood at age 6. She also went by the alias Pamela Kleber/Kleiber.

    2. Cummings Worked With Kessler at Tangles

Joleen Cummings worked with Kimberly Kessler at the Tangles hair salon. Cummings was reported missing when she didn’t show up to pick up her three children for Mother’s Day, her ex-husband told authorities. Police called Joleen a missing endangered person, and they wrote, “Joleen Rebecca Cummings has been missing since May 13, 2018. She was last seen leaving her job in Yulee at five pm on Saturday May 12th. She was supposed to meet her ex-husband in Hilliard, Florida the next day, on May 13th, to pick up her children and never showed up.”
Authorities added: “She may be traveling in a 2006 beige Ford Expedition with license plate Florida/ 035KBQ…Joleen has also used the last name of ‘Jensen” in the past.'”

Kessler/Sybert was the last known person to see Kessler.

The Nassau County Sheriff’s Department is requesting anyone who had an appointment at Tangles or stopped in to contact them. “The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office is seeking information from ANYONE who had an appointment, or stopped into the Tangles Salon, located at 74315, Florida A1A, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034 on Saturday May 12th,” a Facebook post from the Sheriff’s Department says.

“Please contact Detective Beazley at (904) 548-4005. Leave a message with your phone number and name and a Detective will call you back as soon they are available. If you want to remain anonymous and report a crime tip call the First Coast Crime Stoppers at: 1-866-845-TIPS (8477). *** You can also post tips online at http://www.fccrimestoppers.com.”

    3. Kessler Is Accused of Stealing the Name of a Young Girl Who Died in Germany

Kimberly Kessler took the name Jennifer Sybert and moved to Jacksonville, Florida.

According to WPXI, the answer to the new identity can be found in a Pennsylvania cemetery. “A woman named Jennifer Sybert died more than 30 years ago and is buried at North Side Cemetery in Butler. Kessler apparently took her identity,” the television station reported.

There’s a photo of the tombstone on the Find a Grave website. It says that Jennifer Marie Sybert was born in 1974 and died at age 12 on June 13, 1987 in Reinharts, Kemptener Stadtkreis, Bavaria (Bayern), Germany. According to a family website, the real Jennifer died in a car accident.

“Jennifer was born 5 Sep 1974. She died 13 Jun 1987 in Rheinbert, Germany from automobile accident. She was buried in North Cemetery, Butler, Pennsylvania,” the site says.

The real Kimberly was born in 1968, but she masqueraded as the girl born in 1974. Online records say she also lived in Kansas and Tennessee.

    4. Kessler Is Accused of Auto Theft, She Once Lost a Restaurant Job Over Sliced Lemons & a Former Neighbor Called Her a Loose Spirit
Manager at Woody’s BBQ in Fernandina Beach, near Tangles Hair Salon, says Kimberly Kessler worked there for about a week. He says she quit after an argument with another employee over sliced lemons. pic.twitter.com/kB04AGDOTq
    — Amber Krycka (@AmberANjax) May 23, 2018

Kessler has been charged with auto theft while the investigation into Cummings’ disappearance continues. Kessler “is seen on video driving the missing Yulee hair stylist and co-worker’s vehicle,” Jacksonville.com reported. The site reported that police tried to talk with Kessler after Cummings vanished “but she never came to work and the address she had given her boss was bogus.” Then came the biggest clue: She was seen in a security video “driving Cummings’ Ford Expedition as it was abandoned May 13 in a Florida A1A parking lot in Yulee.”

According to the newspaper, Kessler was found “sleeping in her own Kia Soul at an Interstate 95 rest stop in St. Johns County” and also faces a federal charge for possessing a counterfeit passport. The social security number she was using proved false.

The Pennsylvania State Police says Kimberly Kessler didn't want to be found.

The Sheriff revealed that authorities have evidence leading them to suspect that Cummings is no longer alive, but police have not released it.

Those who knew “Jennifer Sybert” as Kimberly Kessler expressed surprise at the developments. “It’s driving me nuts. I don’t believe it,” Kessler’s former neighbor Maria Mills told WPXI-TV. “I mean, she was a loose spirit, but to do something like that, I don’t think she’s capable.”

A man who knew Kessler growing up told the television station, “She was just a little odd. Couldn’t hold a job or anything. She got accused of stealing from some of the jobs she was at.”

She was described as “secretive” by a man who rented a room to her in Clearwater, Florida in 2011 and who spoke about the encounter to WPXI. A team of reporters for the television station has been piecing together Kessler’s life as Jennifer Sybert in Florida.

Reporter Amber Krycka wrote on Twitter: “Manager at Woody’s BBQ in Fernandina Beach, near Tangles Hair Salon, says Kimberly Kessler worked there for about a week. He says she quit after an argument with another employee over sliced lemons.”

    5. Authorities Searched a Wooded Area on Horseback & Jailed Cummings’ Ex-Boyfriend on a Probation Violation Charge

According to CBS 47 reporter Brittney Donovan, Joleen Jensen Cummings’ ex-boyfriend is named Jason Gee. “He is in jail on a violation of probation charge. Records show another ex-girlfriend of Gee’s told police he broke her dishes, shattered her phone and slashed her tires then threatened to make her life ‘miserable,'” she wrote on Twitter.

He was arrested on the probation violation the day after Cummings’ car “was found abandoned in a parking lot nearby on May 15,” according to CBS News.

CBS reported that police searched a wooded area on horseback looking for Cummings to no avail.
