Carroll County teen still missing after massive search

Over 100 volunteers joined a search organized by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office for a 14-year-old boy who has been missing since Saturday.

Jonathon E. Minard was last seen Saturday evening wearing a blue hoodie, brown pants and brown boots. The teen is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and has blue eyes and brown hair.

"I do have faith. I do. He's a strong boy and he's a fighter and I do think that will find him," said Jonathon's aunt Jo Hepner.

Jonathon's aunt and uncle, David Betz, joined dozens of others searching, and they talked about the anguish the boy's parents are feeling.

"They're devastated," Hepner said. "They're lost. His mom is ready to have a breakdown. His dad is too and they feel helpless because they can't do anything."

Caroll County Sheriff Dale Williams said investigators continue to interview witnesses, including the last person to see the teen, but as of Tuesday evening, no one is considered a person of interest.

Relatives said Jonathon was picked up on Friday to do some work, including milking cows, on a farm in New Harrisburg and later was taken to a family friend's home closer to Carrollton. Investigators said he complained of a toothache and was left alone at the residence. After that, he vanished.

The sheriff’s office had asked that anyone wanting to assist in the search meet at 12 p.m. Tuesday at Dellroy Fire House. Officials asked volunteers not to bring children in the search parties due to safety concerns from the terrain being covered.

The landscape is vast and challenging. It's very hilly in that part of Carroll County, and there are a lot of wooded areas and farm fields. Volunteers are searching about a six-mile area.

Using four-wheelers and searching by foot over the area, family, friends and strangers fanned out Tuesday, holding on to hope that Jonathon is out there somewhere alive.

"It's just a lot of ground to cover now," said Dellroy Fire Chief Emerson Huffman. "We have multiple K-9 teams working right now. We have drone teams with infrared cameras on drones. We ran them late last night."

Carroll County sent out an emergency notification stating that the area around Baxter’s Ridge Church in Harrison Township is a special attention area in the search. Units are searching the area for Jonathon, and residents are asked to check garages and other structures on properties.

"There's a lot of abandoned cabins and sheds and stuff back there too, so we're hoping maybe he held up somewhere and is waiting it out," Huffman said.

Jonathon's family prays the teen tried to walk home, got lost, and is waiting to be found.

The search is expected to last into the evening, and some volunteers plan to be back Wednesday if Jonathon isn't found Tuesday.

If anything suspicious is located, authorities ask residents to call the sheriff’s office immediately.

"We just need to find him safe, and prayers from everybody that's been praying, and continue with those prayers," Jonathon's uncle Betz said.

There is a person of interest in the case of the missing Carroll County teen, sheriff confirms

There is a person of interest in connection with the disappearance of a 14-year-old boy who was last seen Saturday, Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams confirmed.

One day after dozens of people organized search parties for Jonathon Minard, Sheriff Williams confirmed that there is a person of interest who has been questioned twice and initially agreed to take a polygraph test, but then changed his mind.

There are no planned searches on Wednesday, and Williams is not expecting charges to be filed in this case Wednesday.

On Tuesday, over 100 volunteers searched a six-mile area around the Dellroy Fire House, scouring the hilly and wooded terrain for any sign of the missing boy.

Search for missing Carroll County teen evolves to criminal investigation

Authorities are not actively searching Wednesday for a missing 14-year-old, and Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams said the case has expanded into a criminal investigation.

Two days of canvassing areas for Jonathon E. Minard proved fruitless.

“We do have a person of interest,” the sheriff said. “There have been no arrests.”

Minard remained missing on Wednesday — four days after he was last seen visiting a 29-year-old friend for the weekend.

“We searched all day yesterday and the night before and came up with absolutely nothing,” Williams said, adding, “We’re not doing any more physical searches today. We’re working on (the case) from a different angle.”

A massive search that began Monday afternoon and continued through 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Dellroy/New Harrisburg areas involved hundreds of law enforcement officers and volunteers, drones, fixed aircraft and other equipment designed to help locate the missing teen. The sheriff had asked Tuesday that volunteers come accompanied by no children “due to the safety concerns from the terrain being covered.”

Area residents were asked to check their sheds and outbuildings for anything that looked out of place. Dellroy and New Harrisburg are about 7 or 8 miles apart, north and west of Carrollton.

Ohio teen Jonathon Minard missing after helping friend at family farm

Authorities in Ohio are searching for a teenage boy who disappeared over the weekend after helping out at a family farm, investigators said.

Jonathon Minard, 14, spent Friday afternoon "doing chores" at a farm near New Harrisburg before leaving that evening with a 29-year-old friend, whose family owns the farm, Carroll County Sheriff Dale Williams told NBC News.

Minard, who lives with his parents roughly nine miles away in Dellroy, Ohio, spent the night at the friend's house before heading back to the farm Saturday to do more work, Williams said.

That afternoon, Minard began complaining of a toothache and tried to contact his mother so he could go home, Williams said. Authorities have been searching for the teen ever since.

"Our Detectives are working diligently and following up on every possible lead reported," the sheriff's department posted on Facebook, saying Minard was last seen wearing a blue hoodie, brown pants and brown boots.

Williams said there is a person of interest in the case but declined to release a name. As of Wednesday morning, Minard remained missing.

Jo Hepner, the teen's aunt, gave a tearful plea for anyone with information on Minard to come forward.

"If you seriously know where he's at and what has happened to him, please tell us," she told NBC affiliate WKYC. "I mean, we're begging you. I mean, this is our last hope."

    :(

I wonder if he was with his 29-year-old friend that day? Maybe his friend can shed some light on what could have happened.

Missing teen found in shallow grave died from acute fentanyl intoxication; death ruled homicide

Jonathon Minard, the missing 14-year-old Carroll County teen who was found in a shallow grave in April, died from acute fentanyl intoxication, and the manner of his death has been ruled a homicide, according to the Carroll County Coroner.

"My office continues to diligently investigate the circumstance surrounding the death of Jonathon Minard. The investigation is active. Dr. Hass has completed work, which is very important to our investigation, but the coroner's determinations are not conclusive of a criminal investigation," said Carroll County Sheriff Dale R. Williams in a news release.

The teen's aunt, Jo Hepner, said the family is still waiting for answers and wants criminal charges to be filed.

    "We want justice," Hepner said.

Cheryl Taylor, who used to be the teen's neighobor, said many other people in the Dellroy community also feel frustrated by a lack of clarity in the case.

"Jonathon's family, our hearts go out to them because they're devastated. It's time they got something done," Taylor said.

In April, Williams said there was a person of interest in the case. The person of interest, who authorities have not named, has been questioned twice. That person agreed to take a polygraph test, but later changed his mind, according to the sheriff’s office.

Carroll County Prosecutor Steven Barnett would not answer questions about how the boy got the fentanyl or if someone buried him after an overdose.

"We're not going to speculate. Again, we're looking at all of the evidence in its entirety and those decisions will come at an appropriate time.

Williams said the investigation in nearing completion and he expects charges will be filed. He would not say if someone could be charged with murder.

Man facing charges in homicide case involving missing Carroll County teen

Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of Jonathon Minard, a 14-year-old boy who was found dead after having been reported missing earlier this year.

On Wednesday, a Carroll County grand jury indicted Matthew Little, 30, on 15 charges, including involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, endangering children, corrupting another with drugs and gross abuse of a corpse.

It’s been nearly five months since the boy’s body was found buried in a shallow grave on a farm in Washington Township on April 19.

According to the Carroll County Coroner, Jonathon died from acute fentanyl intoxication and his death was ruled a homicide.

Part of the indictment states Little "did knowingly, by any means, furnish or administer a controlled substance... and the drug involved was fentanyl or a compound, mixture or substance containing fentanyl."

Jo Hepner, the teen's aunt, came to the sheriff's department on Wednesday after getting word of the indictment and fought back tears as she spoke with News 5.

"Hopefully, we get justice. Hopefully, justice will be served. It has been almost five months now and we just want closure," Hepner said.

$10 million bond set in Ohio teen’s fentanyl death
An Ohio man accused in the death of a 14-year-old boy was in court Thursday for a bond hearing.

Thursday, a judge set little’s bond at a whopping $10 million. The prosecutor said it was a reasonable amount based on the allegations.

“Any defendant that comes before the court is entitled to a reasonable bond. We believe under the circumstances the bond was reasonable in light of the allegations and so we made our recommendations accordingly,” Steven Barnett, the Carroll County prosecutor said.

A toxicology report showed Minard died of fentanyl intoxication. Little is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and endangering children.

He is expected back in court next week for an arraignment hearing.
