Documents show what led police to buried murder victim

Russell Tillis was charged with murder and other charges after dismembered human remains were found last year buried in the yard of his Southside home. Just over a year later, News4Jax has learned that police started digging at his property the day after Tillis, while in jail on other charges, told an inmate wearing a hidden microphone about "a prostitute and drug user."
Defense attorney Randy Reep, who is not involved in this case, said the audio of Tillis talking about the victim would be pretty convincing to a jury.

"I will tell you as a defense practitioner, it is extraordinarily difficult to overcome a defendant's own words that implicate them in a crime," Reep said. "Again, ultimately only one person knew where this body was buried. They got a warrant for it. They went and found that body. It was all corroborated. But think how powerful, if it true, Mr. Tillis told ... where the body was buried and they go and find the body buried exactly there and it's recorded. I would say it’s incredibly incriminating."

Another attorney bails on murder suspect Russell Tillis

At a status hearing Monday for Russell Tillis in the murder of Joni Gunter, the judge granted defense attorney James Boyle's request that he be allowed to withdraw from the case.

Boyle, at one time, was Tillis’ lead lawyer, but became second chair when Michael Bossen was appointed lead attorney.
Tillis, 57, is accused of kidnapping, killing, dismembering and burying a woman in the yard of his home on Jacksonville's Southside, and will face trial on those charges in November. It’s a death penalty case.

The next pretrial hearing is Sept 5.

Russell Tillis to represent himself in murder trial

Russell Tillis will represent himself in his upcoming trial in the murder of Joni Gunter, whose remains were found buried at his home on Jacksonville's Southside.

Since then, he’s gone through no less than eight lawyers, complaining repeatedly they weren’t following his wishes.

On Wednesday, lawyers No. 7 and No. 8 were allowed to withdraw, and the judge ruled Tillis could defend himself.

The trial is still on for Nov. 5.

'House of Horror's' murder suspect reaches out to Action News Jax reporter

In an Action News Jax exclusive the man accused of dismembering a woman's body and burying her in his yard says he will accept the death penalty.

In a jailhouse letter Russell Tillis said he also plans to remain mute throughout his trial.

Tuesday a judge ordered Tillis, whose representing himself, be evaluated by a doctor.

Tillis wrote that letter to our Action News Jax reporter Bridgette Matter where he says he will take a vow of silence, planning to remain silent beyond execution.

The letter is three pages long, neatly written in pencil.

In the letter, Tillis wrote, "I'm going to stand mute and accept the death penalty in protest to the corruption."

He complains in great length about two of his previous lawyers, claiming poor representation.

Both attorneys say the accusations in the letter are false, Action News Jax law and safety expert Dale Carson says Tillis’ behavior is a way to buy time.

Tillis also goes into detail about what he calls an alleged recorded confession saying, “There is no additional evidence no witnesses, no one or nothing other than the alleged confession that connects me with the human remains found in my yard.”

Not sure how he can represent himself and remain mute at the same time. Kind of like what Joseph Duncan did I guess. Presented no evidence in his defense.

Less than two weeks before he was slated to face a jury, Russell Tillis’ trial has been delayed.

The murder trial was slated to start jury selection on November 5th. That has been continued to May 6th.

Tillis previously was granted permission from the judge to represent himself at trial, but he has since relinquished that right and has had an attorney appointed to the case.
