Missing teen Katelin Aken’s luggage found in ditch near Fredericksburg

Akens was taken to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station and dropped her off by her family. She had planned to take the Metro to Regan National Airport to catch a flight.

According to family members, she never arrived at her destination.

But on Monday, her luggage was found in a ditch on River Road, in Spotsylvania, near the Fredericksburg city limit.

“The circumstances surrounding this case are suspicious enough to warrant our full investigative efforts, in attempting to locate Miss Akens,” said Sheriff Roger L. Harris.

The reports of this young woman’s bizarre disappearance come on the heels of reports surrounding the strange death of another Spotsylvania County woman. Authorities discovered the body of 21-year-old Heather Ciccone on Monday morning, after the owner of a residence called police to report that a strange vehicle was parked in his driveway. Ciccone’s body was found in the driver’s side seat of her car. She had reportedly died from a gunshot wound to her head in a case that her family is calling murder. However, authorities in Spotsylvania have not confirmed whether her death was a suicide or a homicide.

This is really, really odd. The metro should have some surveillance video.

Fredericksburg is south of Springfield, opposite direction of National.

Sullivan says the teen’s stepdad, who lives in Spotsylvania County, claims Akens decided she wanted to go to Springfield Mall on Saturday before going to the airport. He apparently dropped her off there and Katelin then planned to take the metro to the airport. But right now, it’s unclear if she ever made it to the Franconia Springfield metro and it looks unlikely that she ever made it to the airport.

I really question whether she was ever dropped off in Springfield. Her luggage was found near Fredericksburg. Springfield is about 45 minutes north via I-95. I can't imagine that someone abducted her from Springfield Mall and then went back to dump her suitcases in Fredericksburg. Makes no sense, whatsoever. IMO.

Sullivan says she dropped her daughter off at her stepdad’s home in Spotsylvania County so he could take her to the airport to catch a flight back to Arizona.

Sullivan says the teen’s stepdad told her Akens decided she wanted to go to Springfield Mall first. She then planned to take the Franconia-Springfield metro to Reagan National Airport.

At this point, police cannot confirm that Akens left Spotsylvania.:gaah:
Investigators are working to review any surveillance video from several locations to determine where Akens was and when.

    Per NG:

Step-father dropped her off at a mall next to the train station. Surveillance video is currently being reviewed by LE.

Spotsylvania Sheriff’s Capt Jeff Pearce said detectives are painstakingly viewing surveillance footage from the train station and the nearby mall in search of any images of Akens. But as of Tuesday, nothing had been found.

Police also have searched her luggage and found things of interest, but declined to elaborate Tuesday.

According to Captain Jeff Pearce with the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, authorities have been able to corroborate that Akens’ stepfather’s car was in the area of the mall that day, though there is no surveillance video of Katelin or her stepdad at Springfield Town Center. Captain Pearce says cameras were not covering the area of the mall that the stepfather says he left Katelin. He would not elaborate on how investigators confirmed the car was there.

Right now, police cannot confirm whether Katelin was at the mall or if she even left Spotsylvania. Authorities have also not yet said that the stepfather himself was at the mall, just that his car was in the area.

Akens’ stepfather is still being interviewed by police. He has not been called a suspect or person of interest in the case.

Stepfather doesn't appear to be cleared, does he? I wonder what their relationship has been like in the past.

Police say missing teen made it to mall

Spotsylvania County detectives have determined that Katelin Akens’ stepfather did indeed take her to the Springfield Mall on Saturday, but what happened to her after that remains a mystery.

Contrary to some reports, Sheriff’s Capt. Jeff Pearce said Thursday that police have yet to find any surveillance footage of the 19-year-old at the mall or anywhere else. But he said police have corroborated the stepfather’s story that he dropped her off in Northern Virginia.

Pearce would not give details about how the story was corroborated, saying those are part of the ongoing investigation.
