Kathryn Adam was last seen on April 29, 1993 at 04:30, at Kwik Trip, 1727 West Crawford in Salina, Kansas. A surveillance camera at Kwik Trip captured the last known photo of Adam.

Her L'eggs Hosiery delivery van were missing and blood was found outside a storage unit Adam used. Police later found the van -- its exterior splattered with mud and its interior soaked with blood -- parked in the parking lot of Russell's Restaurant, 649 Westport. The restaurant was closed at the time for building repairs.

Officials speculated that Adam, who was separated from her husband and living in Salina with her 16-year-old daughter, was attacked when she went to the storage unit after filling her van with gasoline. Police said that a large pool of blood was found outside the storage building and a small amount of blood was found inside. The door of the unit was opened, and it appeared Adam had been loading the van with merchandise.

While Salina police have classified the case as a murder, Adam's body never has been found, and no one has been charged with a crime in connection with her disappearance.
Adam was a route salesperson for L'egg's.

    Kathryn Louise Swendson Adam

    Birth: Feb. 6, 1958
    Atchison County
    Kansas, USA
    Death: Apr. 29, 1993
    [IMG]
Kathryn was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Swendson of rural Atchison county Kansas. Kathryn attended Lancaster Grade School and Atchison County Community High School, where she had been an honor student. She graduated from Topeka High in 1976. She was wed to Gerald Arthur Adam, Nov. 21, 1975, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, Ks.

    By Kim Wilhelm (SALINA, Kan.)

It's known as the "L'eggs Lady" case to Salina investigators. In April 1993, 35 year-old Kathryn Adam started the morning just like any other. She worked for L'eggs Hosiery Corporation and delivered panty hose to stores around Kansas. Around 4:30 a.m., she stopped at the Kwik Shop at Crawford and Centennial in Salina for a cup of coffee and a newspaper. Security cameras captured her photo as she leaves the store. It would be the last known picture of Adam.

From there, investigators believe Adam went to her storage unit at Magnolia and Centennial. She kept her hosiery supplies there and would load her van for the day's deliveries. That's when authorities say something happened.

Salina police get involved when Adam's 16 year-old daughter reports her missing. When officers go to the storage unit, they find a pool of blood outside and a small amount of blood on the inside. The door to the unit was open but nothing was taken. It looked as if she was in the middle of loading her van with supplies.

Later that day, Adam's van was found in the parking lot of Russell's Restaurant at 649 Westport in Salina. Authorities also find blood in the van and it appeared as if it was driven through a muddy area.

Salina Police Investigator Jeremy Watkins says the suspect is likely someone who knew Adam, her schedule and routine. There was a gate and fence around the storage unit at the time so the person was able to get inside without any problem. Authorities did search areas around Saline County but never could locate Adam's body. Watkins points out that 1993 was a wet year with much flooding which may've made searches more difficult.
Adam was currently going through a divorce. Watkins says they've had suspects in the case and have eliminated some suspects during the investigation.

"I believe there is someone out there that knows something more," said Watkins.

If you have information about this case, please contact Salina Police at (785) 826-7210 or Salina/Saline County Crimestoppers at (785) 825-TIPS.

The Salina Journal from Salina, Kansas · Page 8

THE SALINA JOURNAL GREAT PLAINS SUNDAY, APRIL 27, 1997 A3 Mystery still surrounds two Salina cases Adam's family holds out hope she is alive 4 years after her disappearance By SHARON MONTAGUE ne Salina Journal At the time, Mary Swendson didn't think it too terribly odd when her daughter, Kathryn Adam, called to say she'd be coming home the first weekend of May with some items she'd borrowed. But after Adam disappeared April 29,1993, the phone call took on more significance for Swendson of Atchison. Although law enforcement officials believe Adam probably was killed, no body has been found. And Swendson, thinking back to that phone call, clings to the hope that the oldest of her two daughters is alive. "I have no reason to believe anything different," Swendson said. "I just don't have that feeling in my heart and in my gut." . Swendson believes Kathryn might have been injured that day and gone away, by herself or with someone else. But police say the circumstances of the disappearance, four years ago Tuesday, lead to the conclusion of foul play. Blood and a muddy van Adam, who was separated from her husband, lived in a one-bedroom apartment on Iron'Avenue with her 16-year-old daughter. She worked for L'eggs Hosiery, distributing the company's wares to retail stores in the region. Every day, she'd get in her white van with the L'eggs logo and drive to a storage facility at Centennial and Magnolia streets, where she'd load the merchandise. The morning of April 29,1993, she was photographed by surveillance cameras as she left the Kwik Shop, 1727 W. Crawford, just after 4:30 a.m, after filling the van with gas. She never made her deliveries. The next morning, her daughter reported her missing. Retracing Adam's steps, police found the door of the storage unit open and a large amount of blood — later determined to be Adam's blood — on the pavement outside, said Lanny Grosland, Kansas Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge of the Wichita region. Adam's missing van, muddied from being driven on dirt roads, was found that everting in the parking lot of Russell's Restaurant, 649 Westport. And despite searches on the ground and from the air, Adam has never been located. Grosland said Adam could yet be found alive, but it's very unlikely. "Officially, we're carrying the case as a missing person," Grosland said. "But in situations like this, we're really working it like, and considering it, a murder." Certain of murder In the days after Adam's disappearance, detectives with the Salina Police Department and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation talked with Adam's estranged husband, her daughter, everyone who knew her or had contact with her. They appealed ,to people to call if they'd seen the van, if they'd heard anything, if they knew anything. Because of the blood they'd found and the circumstances surrounding the disappearance, they were certain Adam had been murdered. But absent a body, and absent evidence against the person they considered a suspect, no charges were filed. "It's not impossible to charge someone with murder and not have a body," Grosland said, "but, depending on the evidence available, it's more difficult." Lt. Mike Sweeney of the Salina Police Department said officers entered information about Adam in the National Crime Information Computer, and every time an unidentified female You cm imp Anyone with information about the Kathryn Adam disappearance, the Gina Cyphers murder or any other crime can notify investigators by calling: • The Salina Police Department, 826-7210. • Crimestoppers, 825-TIPS, or 825-8477. • The Kansas Bureau of Investigation, (800) KSCRIME, or (800) 572-7463. body is found, the department is notified. Officers then check further to see if the body could be that of Adam.

Kathryn Adam – 20 Years Later.
Filed under: General, Kathryn Adam, KS, Missing, News, Salina

    April 26, 2013
    [IMG]
Kwik Shop surveillance photo of Kathryn Adam – April 29, 1993.

Most people that have lived in Salina, Kansas for 20 years or more have at least heard of Kathryn Adam or have heard of the mysterious circumstances of her disappearance and probable homicide. For me, seeing Kathryn’s L’eggs hosiery van being pulled by a tow truck to the police station has stuck in my mind and haunted me for the past two decades. I was near the end of my junior year in high school at the time and it is something that I will never forget.

Most people knew her as Kathy or the “L’eggs Lady”. Kathryn delivered L’eggs hosiery to Salina area retail stores, such as Walmart and Kmart.

Kathryn lived in a Salina apartment with her teenage daughter in 1993. It was a phone call from her daughter that, for police investigators, started the whole thing.

In a 2005 interview for KSN-TV, Salina Police Lt. Scott Siemsen said that his department received a call from Kathryn’s daughter on April 30, 1993. She simply told them that she had not seen her mother for two days and that’s where the mystery started. Soon after, an image of what is likely one of Kathryn’s last moments on Earth was discovered on a surveillance camera at a Kwik Shop convenience store located at 1727 West Crawford. The image, showing Kathryn wearing a blue Kansas City Royals jacket as she is leaving the store, has been shown to the public dozens of times and has been forever etched into the memories of Salinans who remember her case.

The photo was taken at around 4:30 on the morning of April 29, 1993. According to a store clerk, Kathryn stopped at the store to pick up a newspaper and a cup of coffee that morning. Twenty years later, investigators believe Kathryn was murdered shortly after leaving the store, but her body has never been located and the mystery remains unsolved.

    Kathryn Adam’s L’eggs delivery van.

In 1993, the initial investigation led police to a storage facility at 2435 Centennial Road, which is now known as Citywide Self-Storage. This is where Kathryn kept her hosiery supplies. She would go there each morning to load her van with the day’s deliveries. After Kathryn’s daughter notified police that her mother was missing, police went to the storage facility. Once there, investigators found a pool of blood outside and a small amount of blood on the inside. The door to the unit was open, but nothing appeared to have been taken. It appeared as if she was in the middle of loading her van with supplies and was interrupted. In 2005, KSN-TV’s report on the case revealed that bullet fragments were found in the unit and that it appeared that someone had tried to clean it all up. Siemsen would also say that the evidence indicated to them that someone had likely been shot.

Later on April 30th, police would find Kathryn’s L’eggs delivery van abandoned in the parking lot of Russell’s Restaurant, 649 Westport Blvd. The restaurant, at the time, was closed for renovations. The interior of the van was spattered with blood. Lt. Siemsen told KSN-TV in 2005 that the amount of blood found inside the van could potentially be fatal. Kansas Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Ron Hagen also told KSN that the blood that was found in the van was tested and proved to be that of Kathryn Adam. The exterior of the van revealed a clue of it’s own. It appeared that the van had recently been driven through a muddy area. In recent years, information has circulated that that the van had been driven approximately 60 miles.

In the days and weeks after Kathryn’s disappearance, police conducted searches but turned up no sign of the missing mother. At the time she went missing, Kathryn was going through a divorce. Salina Police Investigator Jeremy Watkins told KWCH-TV in 2010 that they have had suspects during the course of the investigation and have eliminated some. Adding to the frustration of the investigation is that Kathryn’s body has never been found. In the summer months after Kathryn disappeared, most of Kansas experienced severe flooding, meaning that if her body was dumped, it could of been washed away by flood waters and could of ended up just about anywhere.

Kwik Shop at 1727 West Crawford in Salina where Kathryn Adam was last seen alive.

Twenty years later there is still no body, no one in custody, and for Kathryn’s family, no answers.

Investigators do believe that whoever killed Kathryn is likely someone she knew and was familiar with her schedule and daily routine. There was a gate and fence around the storage facility at the time and that person was somehow able to get inside without any problem. It is also been speculated that Kathryn was likely followed from the Kwik Shop to the storage facility by her assailant.

Officially, the case is classified as a homicide. A homicide that has become one the most infamous cold cases in Salina’s history. April 29, 2013 marks the 20th anniversary of Kathryn’s disappearance. It is my hope that with this anniversary, that someone will remember or recall something or will come forward and provide police with the information that will finally close this case and bring justice to Kathryn’s family. I encourage anyone that knows anything to contact the Salina Police Department immediately at (785)826-7210 or Saline/Saline County Crimestoppers at (785)825-TIPS.

Missing Woman Case Approaching 25th Anniversary

Later this month will mark the 25th anniversary of one of the most well-known missing person cases in Salina. On April 29th, 1993, 35-year-old Kathryn Adam went missing.

Adam was last seen at 4:30 in the morning that day, at the Kwik Shop in the 1700 block of West Crawford Street. She was preparing to head out on her job delivering hosiery. She was driving a full-sized Ford van with “She has L’eggs” written on the sides in blue lettering.

Adam was reported missing the next day, April 30th, by her 16-year-old daughter. The L’eggs van van turned up abandoned at 5:45 that evening outside a nearby restaurant. It was found at Russell’s Restaurant, which at the time was closed for remodeling, at 649 Westport Boulevard.

The van was spattered with mud on the outside, and had blood in the inside. Blood was also found at a storage unit in West Salina on Centennial Road where Adam picked up stock each day.

Police speculate someone attacked Adam when she went inside the storage unit. It appeared they interrupted her in the process of loading the merchandise in her van, leaving the door of the unit opened.

Adam was going through a divorce with her husband at the time, and had the one teenage daughter.

Though it is a cold case, it is still open. And though no body has ever been recovered, it is classified as a homicide.

Investigators periodically review the case, go over it, and remain hopeful in solving it. Things like changes in modern technology, and tips that trickle in help keep it active.

Police encourage anyone with any possible information, no matter how small or insignificant they think it may be, to come forward. They can call Crimestoppers at 825-TIPS, text SATIPS to CRIMES (274637), or visit Salina Police Department and follow the Crimestoppers link to submit a web tip.

The Kathryn Adam case is being featured on several social media sites dedicated to missing person cases. It is featured on Kansas Missing And Unsolved on Facebook, and also has its own Find Kathryn Adam page.

Unsolved murders leave loved ones in limbo

Twenty-five years ago today, someone was there with a gun when Kathryn Adam went to a storage unit in west Salina to load her L’eggs van with an inventory of hosiery for her regular delivery route.

Twenty-five years ago tomorrow, her 16-year-old daughter called police to report that Adam had not returned to their apartment all night. Investigating officers found evidence of foul play at the storage unit, but they didn’t find Adam or her van.

The case remains unsolved. Adam’s body has never been found, and her killer hasn’t been arrested.

Her van, however, was found late on April 30 parked at the former Russell’s Restaurant off West Crawford Street. The outside of the vehicle was muddy, and a large amount of Adam’s blood was found inside. There also was a large pool of her blood outside the storage building and a small amount of blood and bullet fragments inside her still-open storage unit.

In the final image of Adam taken at 4:33 a.m. April 29 by a surveillance camera, she is backing out the door of Kwik Shop, 1727 W. Crawford, wearing a blue and white Kansas City Royals jacket and holding a receipt for gas and a newspaper in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.

That image is one of the few left for Adam’s daughter to remember her by.

Adam’s murder is one of six that remain unsolved since 1977 in Salina Police Department files and two unsolved at the sheriff’s office.
