Seeking answers near 28th anniversary of woman's disappearance

A mother is suffering from a wound that may never heal.

It has been nearly three decades since Kristen Lee Morris disappeared at the age of 20. Crime Stoppers of Southeast Texas is trying to bring her mother answers just after the 28th anniversary of her disappearance.

"It's painful and it doesn't go away," says Shari Price, Kristen's mother. Morris was only 20-years-old when she disappeared in 1991. Her mother remains determined to find her. "You go on," she says. "But you don't forget and you don't get over it."

Police say Kristen met and later married 43-year-old John Smith while working at the pawn shop he owned, "General Merchandise and Pawn" in Vidor. He also owned a location off of Beaumont's Eastex Freeway.

Smith was often called "Dr. John," and was known to have money and connections to the community, according to Kristen's mother. "Kristen was a very free and fun spirited girl," says her mother. "She loved life, she loved he family. She loved people."

Price says Smith forced Kristen to cut all ties with the family. She secretly communicated with her mother through notes.

"She wanted to handle it and take care of it herself," says Price. "And I was so torn because as a mother, that's not what I wanted to do." The young woman went missing September 22 of 1991. It was only week after she had expressed to Smith that she wanted to end the relationship.

Her mom says Smith surprisingly gave Kristen permission to go shopping alone that day. She was never seen again. Her teal Honda CRX was found unlocked in Beaumont's North Park Plaza shopping center, where Target is located. Her belongings were inside the vehicle.

Smith, a man police call a suspect in the disappearance, died of heart problems a year after Kristen disappeared. "Kristen would never walk off and leave her family and not contact us and not call," says her mother.

Her pain is a part of why Crime Stoppers of Southeast Texas continues to look for answers 28 years after Kristen went missing. "She just needs to know that someone out there can give that little bit of information that the detectives can follow up with and help her find her baby," says Beaumont Police Officer Carol Riley.

Price says her peace of mind relies on someone with information coming forward.

"We are still looking," she says. "We are still hurting. And we still want to find answers."
