1-year-old girl remains missing in Anderson County

    [snip]

Deputies told media outlets that the toddler’s mother discovered her daughter gone Saturday morning and the door open. Investigators say the girl’s older sister may have opened a door and the toddler walked out.

Anderson County deputies were joined by officers from surrounding areas and volunteers. About 200 people searched for about seven hours Saturday searching the woods around the Pendleton home and continued Sunday.

Search called off; toddler still missing

More than 200 people combed the woods around a Pendleton apartment complex Saturday in search for a 1-year-old girl wearing a white nightie.

Hours later, the search for Leona Wright was called off.

"We have covered the area as best we can tell, (but) we still haven't located the child," said Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper.

Anderson Co. sheriff addresses speculation surrounding child's disappearance

In the hours since Leaona Wright went missing, tips and speculation have run rampant on social media about what may have happened to the one-year-old girl.

    [snip]

"From history, throughout the country, when people come missing, sometimes they end up in a landfill," he said. "And then you have to go back and dig up the whole landfill."

By searching now, deputies are able to eliminate the transfer station as a possible location for Leoana.

Deputies have emphasized that the boyfriend of Leoana's mother, Travis Jones, has been arrested on an unrelated bench warrant for family court back payments, but has not been charged with any involvement in little Leaona's disappearance.

Deputies also said that, as of Sunday afternoon, there has been no confession in the case from anyone regarding the child's whereabouts.

Deputies, tracking dogs resume search for missing 1-year-old girl

Anderson County sheriff’s deputies and tracking dogs have resumed their search for a missing 1-year-old girl.

“The officers plan to search until dark this evening and, if necessary, resume the search tomorrow morning,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Sheila Cole said in a media advisory Sunday afternoon.

Earlier Sunday, investigators sifted through trash from the apartment complex where 1-year-old Leona Wright was last seen.

Ugh. Shades of Malik Drummond. Although, he is older and capable of walking. WTH This baby is only crawling - how far could she have gone? I call BS on this story. Hopefully, some clues are discovered today that will lead to her being found safe.

    Search continues today

The search and investigation into Leaona's disappearance moved on Sunday morning at the Pendleton Transfer Station on Woody Street. Skipper said they searched the waste transfer station as a precautionary measure because deputies learned that multiple dumpsters were picked up from the apartment complex on Saturday.

Skipper said it is better to search now to eliminate the waste transfer station as a possible location.

He said Leaona has still not been found, and the sheriff's office is following every possible lead and continuing interviews. Deputies said the search will resume on Monday morning.

Lt. Sheila Cole said the search would resume again around 9 a.m. Cole said a base of operations would be setup on Veterans Park off Lebanon Road. Search crews would be focusing again on the apartment complex and the surrounding area Monday.

Anyone with information about Leaona's disappearance is asked to call 911.

Crap. So it sounds like baby Leona was left with the boyfriend while she went out to the clubs on Friday night. She returned in the early hours of Saturday (presumably sometime after midnight) and didn't check on Leona. So she took boyfriend's word that Leona was there and okay all night.

I wonder if the door was actually open or if that was made up because she "was scared". If it was open, did boyfriend get up before mom and open the door to make his story?

Ground search called off for missing 1-year-old

The ground search for a missing 1-year-old girl has been called off, a spokeswoman for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday morning.

Leaona Wright disappeared Saturday from the Edgewood Square apartment complex on Cherry Street.

Dozens of deputies, search-and-rescue teams, tracking dogs, horseback riders and volunteers have spent three days searching through woods and fields without finding any sign of the child.

“We are not doing any ground searching this morning,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Lt. Sheila Cole said.

“We are going to be continuing to investigate this case, of course,” Cole said. She said investigators are “focusing on any and all leads that come in.”
