Amber Alert issued for missing 4-month-old Bladen County girl

An Amber Alert has been issued for a 4-month-old girl who was reported missing after her mother, who is not allowed to be unsupervised with her, took the child from a Bladenboro day care, authorities said.

The missing child alert was issued about 10:35 a.m. Tuesday, raising questions why the statewide notification was not issued sooner because the infant was taken Monday night, the Bladen County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities said the child, identified as Lonnisha Renee Askew, had been placed in a foster home in Bladen County under custody of the Columbus County social services department.

She needs special food and care because of a birth defect, authorities said.

Her mother, Juanita Renee Askew, 22, went to Lonnisha’s day care Monday evening, took Lonnisha and fled, the sheriff’s office said.

AMBER ALERT: Abducted Bladen County, N.C. baby found alive at bus stop; mother in custody

A woman at the center of a nationwide Amber Alert after allegedly kidnapping her 4-month-old daughter from a Bladen County daycare has been arrested, according to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office.

Juanita Renee Askew, 22, of Whiteville, was taken into custody at a Greyhound bus stop in Lumberton, N.C. Tuesday afternoon, according to the sheriff’s office. Her daughter, Lonnisha Renee Askew, is alive and is being checked out by EMS.

The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office said Askew’s family was cooperating with authorities and set up a meeting with Askew at the Lumberton bus station Tuesday afternoon so she could surrender the child to the family.

After Askew handed the child over, she and a male companion were arrested by law enforcement. The pair will be charged with child abduction, and additional charges are possible.

The 4-month-old was checked out by medical personnel and seems fine, the sheriff’s office said.
