One in custody in missing Utah student case; ‘person of interest’ asked contractor for secret room with hooks on walls

A contractor in Utah told Fox News that the person of interest asked him to build a secret, soundproofed room with hooks on the walls in the basement of the home. He said he got the request back in April. The person of interest added other requests like a secret door. The contractor turned him down because he was “weirded out” by the situation.

Online court and property records identify the person of interest as 31, divorced this year and with no criminal record in Utah.

Man charged with murder in missing MacKenzie Lueck case and what we know about him

    by Jennifer Weaver
    Friday, June 28th 2019

(KUTV) — Ajaya Ayoola, the owner of the home in Fairpark searched by police for the past two days in the missing case of MacKenzie Lueck, has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder, aggravated kidnapping, and desecration of a body.

He was apprehended by a police SWAT team on Friday morning at the Parkside Condominium complex at 1000 S. West Temple.

What we know about Ayoola is that he is a:

    • Utah State University graduate,
    • Served as an Information Technology Specialist in the U.S. Army,
    • Senior technical support analyst at Dell, according to his LinkedIn account.
He also has a modeling page with Model Management and at some point also worked as a systems administrator at Goldman Sachs. He does not have a criminal history, according to private investigator Jason Jensen.

2News discovered that Ayoola previously lived in the Northridge Apartments in North Salt Lake across the street from Hatch Park, the location a Lyft driver dropped off 23-year-old Lueck, June 17, where she was last seen getting into another vehicle at 2:59 a.m. Ayoola was evicted from that apartment in 2016.

His home searched at 547 N. 1000 West is where police booked into evidence 27 boxes of AR-15 223 ammunition and a pitchfork, along with bags of other items from the house in question early Thursday morning.

2News searched the history of the home and found it’s listed on Airbnb. In a previous interview, the police chief did not confirm what led authorities to house nor did he say Ayoola was the person Lueck met on the morning she disappeared at Hatch Park.

However, what is known now is that Ayoola advertised on social media a free mattress and box spring early last week that police are highly interested in retrieving.

Police are still asking for the people who picked up that mattress and box spring to call them at 801-799-3000.

Police: Missing University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck is dead; man charged with murder

Salt Lake City police have charged a man with murder in the killing of missing University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck, officials announced Friday.

The suspect, identified as Ayoola Ajayi, was taken into custody Friday morning and also faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, desecration of a human body and obstruction of justice, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said.

"I will not be saying the killer’s name again," Brown told reporters.

Lueck, 23, was last seen meeting an unknown individual around 3 a.m. on June 17 near a park in Salt Lake City after being dropped off by a Lyft driver.

Her uncle, reading a statement on behalf of her family Friday, said they would like to "express their gratitude" to all the law enforcement agencies that assisted in the investigation. He also said her family is "grateful" of those who supported it.

Mackenzie Lueck disappearance: Suspect wanted secret room with hooks on its wall built in home, contractor reveals

A handyman in Utah told Fox News exclusively on Friday the suspect arrested in the murder of a University of Utah student had asked to build a secret, soundproofed room in his home's basement with hooks on its walls.

Salt Lake City police announced the arrest Ayoola Ajayi, the owner of the home where police were seen digging holes in the backyard during a search for 23-year-old Mackenzie Lueck. He will face several charges including murder and obstruction of justice.

Meanwhile, Brian Wolf, a local contractor, told Fox News on Friday the individual who owned that home reached out to him in April and asked him to build a “soundproof” room there.

“He slowly added on other requests, like building a secret door and adding hooks to the wall,” Wolf said, explaining how the individual asked him to come to the home and give him an estimate for the potential project.

Wolf added the person said he wanted construction done as soon as possible, “before his girlfriend got back into town.”

The contractor, who owns a home-repair business in Utah, said he was “weirded out” by the whole scenario and turned down the job offer, telling the individual he was too busy.

Lueck was last seen after she was dropped off by a Lyft driver at a park near Salt Lake City. She hailed the ride after flying in from Los Angeles, where she had attended her grandmother's funeral.

Police said the Lyft driver has been cleared in the case and told them Lueck did not seem distressed on her way to the park. Two of Lueck's friends told Fox News they don't believe that she would intend to go to the park at 3 a.m.

Meanwhile, a neighbor of the homeowner who is a person of interest told Fox News on Thursday "many women" frequented his home.

"There were always so many women coming in and out at all hours of the night," the neighbor, who did not want to be identified, told Fox News.

Authorities said police searched the Salt Lake City home for about 19 hours for clues on Lueck's whereabouts. They said they were also looking for a mattress and box spring removed from the home last week.

Another neighbor, Tom Camomile, defended the “person of interest,” calling him a “professional man” and a “nice guy.”

“I’m surprised because I wouldn’t take him for that but then we never really know who, what, when, where, or why but I would be really, really surprised if it turns out that he is actually involved in it,” Camomile told Fox News.

This guy's a freak. I would be surprised if Mackenzie was his first victim. At the very least, he has assaulted women before.

Yes, that she was a sugar baby searching for a sugar daddy and mentioning that she had 2 such arrangements at the time (at the time that she wrote about it on some blog or similar) I am not victim shaming/blaming. It's just what she wrote herself.

27 boxes of AR15 ammunition and he asked a contactor to build a secret room with hooks?? What the fudge???!!!!

The contractor didn't do it and really couldn't alert anyone to it because it's not illegal to have something like that set up.

O/T It reminded me of a gangster that had a house built in Chicago. He had all sorts of secret rooms and hidden stairs in it. Unsurprisingly, every man who worked on the house was found dead soon after the completion of the house.

It's not victim bashing, it appears to be a truth:

Was Missing College Student Working as a 'Sugar Baby'?
    10:12 AM PDT, June 27, 2019 - MAYA CHUNG

...Since her disappearance, it’s been reported that the University of Utah student was dating multiple people through online dating sites and apps, The Daily Mail reported.

Lueck was a self-proclaimed “sugar baby,” according to Facebook comments published by the paper.

“Try tinder and be blunt about it. Mine says 'I want a SD/SB relationship with a real connection.' If [they] don't know what a SD/SB is, tell them bluntly sugar daddy and sugar baby. But if they don't know, they aren't really worth your time," read one of Lueck's comments, which was reportedly posted in a private Facebook group.

She also claimed to have two sugar daddies in another post.

“I have some experience on seeking arrangements, online only, tinder, and currently have two lol,” she wrote three months ago in the group.

Police said they are looking into Lueck’s social media and dating profiles.

“In regards to her online activity, we are aware of this aspect and continue to look into all facets of her life for leads into her disappearance,” Assistant Police Chief Tim Doubt said.
