Southern Oregon mother Malina Nickel vanished the day before Thanksgiving 2016. Malina’s mother, Chareen, knew something was wrong when her daughter didn’t show up, as planned, for dinner. She was last seen at her home on the night of November 23 by her 18-year-old nephew. At the time of her disappearance, Malina was on probation and had a warrant out for her arrest, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department. Family members insist that the 29-year-old would not leave her children. This remains an open and active case but no persons of interest have been named. Anyone with information regarding Malina’s case is urged to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department at 541-774-6800.

    Unsolved Update: Malina Nickel

This week marks one year since the 2016 disappearance of a Shady Cove woman. Malina Nickel, 30, was last seen just before Thanksgiving. Detectives are hoping someone will come forward with information that will lead them to her.

Family members told deputies they found Malina's car, a white 2002 Ford Escape, abandoned near the Trail post office on November 25, 2016. A witness reported seeing a male walking away from Malina's vehicle and getting a ride to a gas station in Shady Cove on the night of November 23. The male has not yet been positively identified.

"They said they picked somebody up by her car and we just can't seem to figure out who was sitting in between us on the way to the gas station. It was more than a block. Now whether that's because they don't want to put themselves in a bind in this investigation or if its that they want to cover for the person," said Malina's mother, Chareen Nickel.

Detectives say Malina was known to use drugs and had a warrant for her arrest at the time she went missing, but their focus is on solving her disappearance. They have followed up on numerous tips, interviewed potential witnesses, and searched specific locations. At this time, all leads received have been investigated. The process has proved challenging as most tips have turned out to be based on speculation or rumors.

Detectives are confident someone holds the facts that will help them close the case.

"I do eventually think we'll find her because somebody knows she's missing. Somebody knows something. All we need is for that someone to come forward who actually know the truth of what happened. But i feel it, i feel like we're going to find her," said Waldon.

Detectives working hard to solve missing person cases

There are 19 missing person cases open and unsolved right now in Jackson County.

The sheriff’s office is doing what it can to bring closure to the families of the missing.

That includes searches like ones that happened this weekend.

The searches this last weekend were related to the case of Malina Nickel who’s been missing since Fall of 2016.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Sergeant Scott Waldon says the office received a tip her remains could be buried off 227, but unfortunately deputies couldn’t find anything.

“The frustration comes because somebody just falls of the face of the earth and you’re just like ‘that doesn’t happen,'” Sergeant Waldon said.

“One of the biggest ones right now is the Malina Nickel case we’re working because that’s been so active, and we’re constantly getting tips about that case,” Sergeant Waldon said.

Malina Nickel went missing from Shady Cove just before Thanksgiving in 2016.

Sergeant Waldon says he frequently receives tips about her case.

A recent one prompted a search in Trail over the weekend.

“We were given a tip about her possibly being buried off of 227. And we went up there and searched some areas we were given. Unfortunately, we didn’t find anything. I was acually pretty excited about that tip and thought we were maybe going to get something out of it,” Sergeant Waldon said.

Search continues for missing Shady Cove woman two years later

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office continues their search for a Shady Cove resident Malina Nickel two years later. 31-year-old Nickel was last seen at her home just before Thanksgiving in 2016.

"This isn't something that everybody is going to be on the look out for, but there are that people that have that key information," Sgt. Julie Denney said. "We just need them to come forward so that we can help provide answers for Malina's family. "

The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to come forward to help their investigation.

As the mother of two children, family members said she wouldn't have left them behind.

"Detectives have been in contact with the family through out the investigation," Denney said. "We've worked with out search and rescue to conduct a lot of searches to follow up on a lot of leads and the family has been directly involved with that from the beginning."

Deputies said all leads have been investigated and they have been working with search and rescue teams to conduct searches at different locations in the area.

"The longer an investigation goes on, the more difficult it can be and that’s why it’s so important that we get that information that we need to lead us to Malina," Denney said.

SHADY COVE MAN ACCUSED IN MISSING ROOMMATE'S SLAYING

A Shady Cove man has been arrested and accused of murdering his roommate and hiding her body in the woods earlier this week, the Jackson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) confirms. 20-year-old Destiny Anne Finch was believed missing by family and friends.

The suspect in Finch's murder is 21-year-old Shane Ryan Michael Wayman.

A Facebook profile for Malina Nickel, a woman who disappeared from Shady Cove in 2016, lists Shane Wayman as her nephew. Nickel's case remains unsolved nearly three years later. Several neighbors living in the same mobile home park as Finch and Wayman speculated to NewsWatch 12 that Wayman was — in some regard — a witness at the time of his aunt's disappearance.

Lt. Julie Denney with JCSO said that she could not share any details regarding the investigation into Nickel's disappearance or any potential connection to Wayman, and no contemporary public reports regarding Nickel's case make any mention of his name.

Investigators have now also found human remains along with other evidence that leads them to believe they’ve found Malina. Prosecutors with the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office said in a press release they think Shane is connected to Malina’s disappearance.

On November 20, the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office announced Shane was indicted by a grand jury for two counts of criminal mistreatment and one count of abuse of a corpse in Malina’s case.

He was also indicted in November for killing his room mate, according to the article.

In spite of the charges, investigators have not publicly provided a narrative describing what they believe happened to Nickel. The criminal mistreatment charges allege that Wayman, "having assumed the care, custody, and responsibility for the supervision of Malina Nickel, did . . . withhold necessary and adequate physical care."

"The defendant, on or about November 23, 2016 . . . did unlawfully and intentionally abuse a corpse," the third count reads.

*(So, were they doing drugs, Nickel possibly overdosed and he didn't seek help?)
