Suspected killer helps with new sketch of woman slain in Marion County in 2006

Suspected serial killer Shawn M. Grate sat down with a sketch artist Monday morning at the Ashland County jail and described what he remembers about the woman he says he killed in his Marion home a decade ago. And because of that, Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey now is circulating a new and updated sketch of this Jane Doe victim, whose bones were found in a Marion County roadside ditch in March 2007.

    Holly Zachariah, The Columbus Dispatch

Suspected serial killer Shawn M. Grate sat down with a sketch artist Monday morning at the Ashland County jail and described what he remembers about the woman he says he killed in his Marion home a decade ago.

And because of that, Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey now is circulating a new and updated sketch of this Jane Doe victim, whose bones were found in a Marion County roadside ditch in March 2007. Bailey said he hopes the sketch will lead to new information about the woman's identity.

Grate, 40, was arrested and charged last month after a woman who said he had kidnapped her secretly summoned authorities while he slept. Since then, Grate has been charged in that kidnapping and in the slayings of two Ashland County women and is suspected in others. He has not been charged in the Marion case.

"My goal is to identify this woman first, find her family and get the remains back to them," Bailey said. "Then we will see what comes next."

After the bones were discovered in 2007, a sketch artist created a rendering, but no one came forward to say they recognized the woman. Bailey said that after Grate confessed that he killed a woman in Marion County, detectives showed him the old sketch.

"He said that didn't look anything like her," Bailey said.

So this morning, a sketch artist on loan from the Delaware County sheriff's office met with Grate.

Bailey said that Grate told investigators that the woman's name was Dana or Diane, and that he remembers she was from Ohio because he kept her identification for a time. He doesn't remember, though, whether that was an Ohio driver's license or an Ohio identification card. He said she was 26.

Bailey said detectives recently went back to the Pleasant Township home in Marion County where Grate said he killed the woman. They took some evidence and, even after all this time, are hoping there is DNA that might help solve the mystery.

In addition, Marion detectives pulled some 1,600 records of white, 26-year-old women named Dana who lived in Ohio in 2006 when the killing occurred.

"I've got nothing else. All I have is bones. No purse, no clothing. Nothing," Bailey said. "At this point I just want to find someone who knew her."

While being questioned in the Ashland County homicides, Grate told detectives about the Marion killing. Investigators say he told them that his mother had bought magazines from a door-to-door saleswoman and that they had never been delivered so later, when he saw a young woman selling magazines in the neighborhood, he lured her into his car and took her back to his house.

He said she fought him, so he stabbed her, Bailey said.

Grate case: New sketch of Jane Doe released
    Spenser Hickey , Reporter 2:22 p.m. ET Oct. 3, 2016

MARION - The Marion County Sheriff's Office now has a better illustration of a woman they seek to identify as part of the Shawn Grate case, after a sketch artist met with Grate himself on Monday.

After being arrested in Ashland, Grate reportedly confessed to killing a woman in Marion County in 2005 but could not remember her full name. The woman's remains had been found in March 2007, and the case was a mystery until then.

While the Sheriff's Office had a forensic sketch based on the woman's skeleton, Grate said it didn't look completely accurate when detectives interviewed him. Because of that, Delaware County Sheriff's Office criminal analyst Brook Segaard met with Grate and Marion County investigators and then drew the new sketch that Sheriff Tim Bailey released Monday.

Sheriff: Grate can't remember Marion victim's name

Most of what is known about the woman comes from Grate himself, who was interviewed by local investigators multiple times. Grate reportedly said she may have been named Dana or Diane and he thought she was 26 when she was killed, according to officials.

Sheriff Tim Bailey said she had been selling magazines in Marion County, and Grate's mother purchased a subscription from her but did not receive any copies. This angered Grate, and Bailey said he killed her out of revenge several months later. While Grate reportedly kept a driver's license or other state identification belonging to the woman for some time, he eventually disposed of it and it has not been recovered.

Bailey said on Monday that his office still hasn't received any credible information regarding the woman's identity since they announced her connection to Grate two weeks ago. They are working to see if any magazine companies can identify her as a former subscription seller, and hope someone who knew her will learn of the case through the media.

Identifying the woman is the "primary goal" of the Sheriff's Office investigation as Bailey said they are not in any rush to present charges against Grate, who is being held in Ashland County on a $1 million bond.

    Marion County Jane Doe (2007)
    External images

On March 10, 2007, the remains of an unknown female were discovered in a wooded area of Marion County, Ohio. She was between fifteen and twenty-four and had died between 2002 and 2006, but most likely within the last two years. No clothing or personal effects were found with the body, which was completely skeletonized. The female had some unique physical characteristics. She was predominantly white, but could have had Hispanic or Asian heritage. She had also suffered damage to one of her front teeth, but this may have occurred posthumously. She did appear to have otherwise taken considerable care of her teeth and there was no evidence that she had seen a dentist during her lifetime. She was between five feet three to five feet nine inches tall and had brown, straight hair. In September 2016, authorities were investigating the possibility that "Jane Doe" was a victim of alleged serial killer Shawn Grate, who claimed he had killed this victim after encountering her selling magazines door-to-door.

Suspected Ohio serial killer linked to at least five deaths tells police he targeted first victim for failing to deliver magazines
    BY NICOLE HENSLEY
    NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

    Tuesday, September 20, 2016, 4:44 AM

A suspected serial killer in Ohio spared no details explaining how he lured a young woman home and stabbed her to death for failing to deliver a magazine subscription more than a decade ago, authorities said.

And that was his first victim, Shawn Grate told investigators in Marion County.

Grate, who is already in custody on suspicion of killing two women and abducting another, claims he stashed the Jane Doe in a basement for two days as early as 2003, before dumping the remains in a forest along a rural road.

He returned to the grave site two years later and burned the remains, erasing any immediate hopes of identifying the woman unless a tipster comes forward, Sheriff Tim Bailey explained in a press briefing Monday.

The woman's skeletal remains were found in 2007 by a man collecting aluminum cans who initially confused the bones for a dumped deer carcass.

“(Grate) burned the body, which scorched the leaves and the trees,” Bailey said, describing Grate as a serial killer.

Grate already faces two murder charges in suspicion of slaying a pair of women found dead in a supposedly vacant Ashland home, but investigators fear the 40-year-old could be linked to at least two more deaths.

“I would be looking for more bodies,” Bailey said, adding that the FBI will be profiling the slay suspect.

Grate has also been charged with one count of kidnapping in suspicion of holding a woman against her will.

Her hushed 911 call on Sept. 13 led to his arrest and the shocking discovery of two bodies inside a vacant Ashland home.

    Forensic Facial Reconstruction Created for
    Marion County Jane Doe

(MARION, Ohio)—Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine and Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey today released the facial reconstruction of a woman whose skeletal remains were found in 2007.

The clay model was created by a forensic artist with the Attorney General's Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in an effort to help Marion County authorities identify the woman.

Her remains were found in Marion County approximately 100 feet east of Victory Road on March 10, 2007.

She is believed to have been Caucasian and may have been between 15 and 22 years old at the time of her death. She is estimated to have been between 5'3" and 5'9" and between 100 to 150 pounds.

Her teeth were all well cared for and had no obvious dental work or fillings. No clothing, jewelry, or other items were found with the remains.

While it is believed that she had brown hair, items such as hair style are the BCI forensic artist's estimations to complete the image and should not be considered significant markers for identification.

It is not known if the woman resided in Marion County or in another part of the state or country, so anyone who sees a resemblance to a missing friend or relative is urged to contact Marion County Sheriff's Office Lt. Christy Utley at 740-382-8244 ext. 5120.

MARION - Shawn Grate has been charged with two counts of murder in Ashland County, but Marion County Sheriff Tim Bailey said he confessed to a local killing as well.

In March 2007, a man found skeletal remains at a dumping site on Victory Road, and while investigators determined the victim was a woman in her 20s, it remains a Jane Doe case.

Bailey said Grate told investigators he killed a woman in 2005 and then took her body to that site.

"He said this was the first (woman) he ever killed," Bailey said.

According to Bailey, Grate said the victim had been selling and delivering magazines from door to door and didn't deliver ones to the house where he was living, and that led to him killing her. He reportedly told investigators she may have been named Diana or Dana, that he thought she was 26, and that she lived in Ohio but not Marion County.

While Bailey said the killing occurred in the basement of the house where Grate lived at the time, he didn't want to give the address because new occupants live there now. Detectives searched the residence for any trace evidence.

"We're trying to find out what company she was selling magazines for, and trying to identify her," Bailey said.

After the body was found, the Sheriff's Office publicized the case to try to identify the woman, so some details were publicly available, but Bailey said he thought Grate's statements were "credible."

"My concern was that he made this up... I think we can call this credible information at this point," Bailey said. "Just because we have a suspect doesn't mean the case is closed."

Officials are continuing to investigate the possibility that Grate may be connected to other deaths beyond the four in which he's been named as a suspect. There are currently two in Ashland County, one in Richland County and now this case.

"He's obviously a serial killer," Bailey said. "We all want to take a close look at where he was at and what he was doing between the time our body was found and the one in Ashland County, so that's kind of where we're at."

Investigators are also continuing their efforts to identify the victim, as they have DNA and dental records and have listed the case in the FBI Missing Persons list and other law enforcement networks.

"We're surprised that if this girl is missing, why we didn't get a hit," he said.

Bailey said the investigation into the death is developing.

Attempts to reach Grate's attorney, Rolf Whitney of Mansfield, were not successful this morning.
