Melbourne woman Jacoba Tromp has been found — but her husband Mark is still missing

IT’S been described as the most “bizarre” case a senior police officer has seen in 30 years.
Mystery still surrounds what happened to a Victorian couple who were reported missing by their children after they vanished while on a trip to NSW.
Jacoba Tromp, 53, is in hospital in Yass, where her mental state is said to be causing concern, while her husband Mark, 51, is still unaccounted for.
Police believe he is in the Wangaratta area, over 300km away across the Victoria border, where he is thought to have been involved in a baffling incident on Wednesday night.
The couple were reported missing by their adult children after they became separated from them while on a family trip to NSW.
There are fears Mr Tromp may not want to be found, and police fear he is “in pretty bad shape mentally”.
Police told reporters on Thursday stress over family and financial issues prompted the family’s sudden departure, leaving their house unlocked and phones and credit cards behind.
Son Mitchell, 25, said while on the trip pressures about life were getting worse and his parents decided to flee.
“It was a build-up of different, normal every day events, just pressure and it slowly got worse as the days went by,” he told reporters.
“I’ve never seen anything like it — it’s really hard to explain or put a word on it but they were just fearing their lives and then they decided to flee.”
Police found the family’s Silvan home open and with business papers strewn through the house.
Police said valuable possessions were lying around, car keys had been left in vehicles, passports were there, and phones were on the bench.
A man in Wangaratta, in Victoria’s northeast, saw a grey Peugeot station wagon following him and his girlfriend around the town about 10pm on Wednesday night. It then stopped near Merriwa Park, and a man got out of the drivers seat and ran away.
His identity hasn’t been confirmed — but police were confident it was Mr Tromp and that he is still in the Wangaratta area.
Police and the Dog Squad searched the park, but failed to find the driver of the dumped car. The man had been alone in the car.
At a media conference this afternoon, Sergeant Mark Knight described the situation as a “very unusual case”.
It was the most bizarre he’d seen in 30 years policing, the ABC reported.
He said Mrs Tromp’s “mental health and wellbeing wasn’t of a good standard” but she was still being assessed by doctors.
The behaviour was out of character and family had “serious concerns” for their safety.
The Tromps left their bank cards and mobile phones at home in Silvan, Victoria.
Their children have all now returned to Victoria, and are reportedly baffled by developments.

Know how you feel Marly - I was in the car listening to an ABC Report - a Policeman on the case was explaining the details - s l o w l y - and I still couldnt get my head around it.
It took me a while to try and piece together the timeline as MSM seemed a bit all over the place too.
I did hear a mention of the town of Healesville and because thats familiar town (Tej's case) I thought I would look it up.

I hope Mark Tromp is found and I hope the family is recieving support at this time.

Victorian man Mark Tromp, described as paranoid and 'fleeing something', still missing after 'bizarre' family trip

Police are still searching for a missing Victorian man who fled from officers and has been described as paranoid after becoming separated from his wife and children on a family trip.
Berry farmer Mark Tromp, 51, and his family left their home at Silvan, east of Melbourne, on Monday, leaving behind passports and mobile phones.
The children left their parents, Mark and Jacoba Tromp, in the New South Wales central tablelands after they did not did not want to continue with the holiday.
The couple was then reported missing.
The couple's son, Mitchell Tromp, said his parents were paranoid before they disappeared and were "fleeing something", describing their behaviour as something "like a movie".
Mr Tromp abandoned the grey Peugeot station wagon the family had been travelling in and fled from police in Wangaratta in north-east Victoria on Wednesday night.
Police searched the area but he was not found.
Mrs Tromp was found safe on Thursday by a member of the public and was taken to a hospital in Yass suffering from stress-related health concerns.
One daughter was also hospitalised in Goulburn with stress-related health issues.
Police said the circumstances around the case were unusual and one officer described it as "the most bizarre case in 30 years".

Police said there had been two sightings of Mr Tromp, one in Victoria and one in New South Wales, but would not give more precise locations.
Sergeant Mark Knight said police were still waiting on CCTV footage, but the last confirmed sighting of Mr Tromp was in Wangaratta on Wednesday.

Mystery Deepens: Tromp Daughter Found In Ute

'She did not know her name'.
The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Victorian man Mark Tromp has deepened, after the 51-year-old's adult daughter was reportedly found "distressed and disoriented" in the back of a ute in Goulburn, NSW.
In yet another strange twist, reports have emerged one of the couple's adult children, Riana Tromp, was found in the back of a utility truck in Goulburn on Friday.
After filling up with fuel at a Caltex Service Station in Goulburn on Tuesday and heading to Canberra for a doctor's appointment Goulburn resident Keith Whittaker received a shock as something knocked the back of his seat.
"I felt a kick to the back of my seat. I turned around and saw two legs stretched across the back between my seat and the floor. She was lying on the floor," Whittaker told The Goulburn Post.
"She did not know her name and had no idea where she was."

Tromp family: Red herrings and disturbing revelations in bizarre tale

This story has so many red herrings it's hard to know where to look.
The mobile phone thrown out the window of a moving car?
The muesli bar wrapper on a motel room floor? The Tromp family of the Yarra Valley, meanwhile, is still in crisis.

Mother Jacoba Tromp and one of her daughters, Riana, 29, are in the care of mental health services in Goulburn, NSW.
    Father Mark Tromp is missing.
He was last seen in Wangaratta late on Wednesday night running into parkland after tailgating a young couple through the town.

Police had a report of a man walking down the road near Bega carrying a one-man tent, but it wasn't him.
Yet it has emerged that Riana was found by a Goulburn man in the back of his ute after he started driving to Canberra and felt kicking from the back of his seat.

Riana had walked out on her parents bizarre road trip at the Jenolan Caves on Tuesday.
Her sister and brother had walked out, too, and eventually also their mother, who was found wandering in an agitated state in Yass on Thursday.
She had caught public transport, a train or a bus, from Wangaratta on her own.

The family from Silvan on the outskirts of Melbourne – who have a berry farm and an earthmoving business – left their expansive home in a hurry on Tuesday.
Keys were found in car ignitions, doors unlocked, passports and wallets on benches.

When Riana's younger sister Ella, 22 – in whose silver Peugeot the family were travelling, 1500km from home – ditched the trip,
she drove a car back to the family home from Goulburn, a car she neither owned nor hired.
Brother Mitchell got out in Bathurst and caught trains to Sydney then back to Melbourne

Riana, says Goulburn man Keith Whittaker, was dazed and catatonic when he found her in his ute, before delivering her to Goulburn police.
"I asked her who she was and if she was all right. She did not know her name and had no idea where she was.
She mostly sat and stared straight ahead. She was a well-dressed young woman and she offered to give me $50 for my trouble," he told the Goulburn Post.

Police have fingerprinted a motel in Wangaratta, the town where Mark Tromp was last seen.
A room's door was found ajar, the bed showed signs of use and a muesli bar wrapper was on the floor.

Mitchell Tromp, meanwhile, back at the family's home with Ella in Silvan, appeared overwhelmed on Friday by what had occurred.
He said he only took the road trip with his parents – the family all work together and are very close – because they were distressed and he wanted to persuade them to turn back.
He said he threw his mobile phone out the window in Warburton because they urged him to and warned they were being "tracked".
When their behaviour grew worse, he chose to leave his family, he said.

It also emerged that NSW police had circulated a document internally warning the family could be suffering from group delusional schizophrenia.
Mitchell Tromp told The Age there had been no diagnosis and the statement was incorrect.

Police continue to search for Mark Tromp around Wangaratta, where the family owns property.
Several relatives from Victoria have also joined the hunt, including his brother Ken, a policeman from Monbulk.

Family continue to insist the Tromps' behaviour is out of character. "They are a gorgeous family, beautiful family, hard-working family," said Wilma Tromp, Mark's mother.
"I know that he's extremely busy, they're a busy couple. Very busy.
"[Jacoba] loves working outside. They're just normal. There's no underhandedness.
    It's a real mystery."

Folie à deux and delusional disorder by proxy in a family
<snip> Shared psychotic disorder is mostly observed among people who live in close proximity and in close relationships.5 It is found in parent-offspring, sibling-sibling, or husband-wife constellations. Furthermore, mother-daughter or sister-sister pairs represents fifty percent of the psychotic dyads.6 Rarely all the family members share the same delusions, and this is called folie à famille. <snip>
Just found this case study; interesting. FWIW.

I have NO clue...the study I looked at said by proxy, which made me think of Munchausen's (sp?) by proxy, but even in this study, it says that an entire family being affected is extremely rare. I have read books by physicians who used that premise as a theme, and, although they were fiction, the authors said it well could happen. I'll look up Tess Garritsen (one of my fave doc/authors) & see if I can find any comments. I can also check a couple of her books. I'll let you know if I find anything. I'm totally perplexed, but intrigued.

the Salem Witch Trials might have been caused by a rotten crop of rye.

The sequence of events leading up to the trials began when eight girls in the village started experiencing “distemper,” which was described as including seizures, hallucinations, skin prickling, and violent gastric distress (to put it politely). At a certain point, witchcraft was brought up as a possible cause, the hallucinations became more specifically satanic, and the accusations started flying. Linnda Caporael, when taking a history class to finish a requirement in college, stumbled upon the description of the “distemper” and immediately thought back to a French incident of poisoning from eating fungus-infected grain that she’d read about as a kid.

The fungus is called ergot, and attacks grasses (like the grains we eat) by sending out little fungal shoots in place of certain kernels. Until the 19th century, it was often thought that the ergot shoots were just kernels that had been baked brown by the sun. It’s known to thrive on rye (which was the main grain grown in Salem Village) and, significantly, contains chemicals similar to LSD. Cases of ergot poisoning (known as ergotism) were well-documented in medieval Europe, and often caused victims to experience the same symptoms as the “bewitched” Salem girls.

You can read the whole study here, in which Caporeal lays out the case for ergotism being what caused the original “distemper.” <snip>
@Kimster, this came to mind immediately when you asked about mold, etc. I think ergotism is rare these days, but it DID happen. There are other foods that can cause similar symptoms; I have an appt. but will do some checking later.

Is the Tromp family suffering from a rare shared psychotic disorder known as folie à deux?

Is it mental illness? Some sort of environmental poisoning situation involving a farm-related toxin?
Or is someone, as parents Mark and Jacoba Tromp fear, really out to get them?
The case bears many hallmarks of a rare psychiatric condition known as folie à deux, a French term meaning “madness of two” which almost always occurs in close-knit families,
between husband and wife and between siblings.
The syndrome can be shared by more than two people — folie à trois, folie à quatre, folie en famille or even folie à plusieurs — which translates as “madness of many”.
The only factors that need to be present in a case of folie à deux are a hard-to-break attachment and social isolation.

It could be a combination of all three plus other circumstances which have turned into a perfect storm.
The family certainly needs to be credited with holding this together, they seem like a normal loving family who work hard and are tight knit.
It must be so hard on all of them at the moment - they are all impacted by whatever is happening to them, as a family unit.

From the same Media article above...
I remember this case - the behaviour of the twin sisters Ursula and Sabina Eriksson, it is quite unreal -
if it had not have been filmed, I dont know how anyone could have explained it without becoming suspicious that the media reportinf was somehow wrong,
But it is quite astounding to see this behaviour in action.

The video below is 50 minutes, but the British documentary starts with the filming of the behaviour and the Police and Ambulance are on the scene - so
you dont have to go too far into the video to see what is happeing.

    Saturday 3rd September 2016
There have been several famous cases of folie à deux, including the 2008 case of Swedish twins Ursula and Sabina Eriksson, who were notoriously captured on CCTV
running through traffic in Liverpool, England as they fled from non-existant assailants who they believed were trying to harvest their organs.
In 2010, US actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi were arrested in Canada in a psychotic and delusional state after attempting to seek asylum for from a group of assassins
called the “star whackers,” whom they believe responsible for the deaths of Heath Ledger and David Carradine.

    August 19 2015
The biological bonds shared by twins have experts puzzled

IT WAS an act of insanity that still sends shivers down the spines of those who witnessed it.
Seemingly out of the blue, on an otherwise ordinary May day in 2008, Swedish twins Ursula and Sabina Eriksson snapped.
After their tour bus stopped on the M6 motorway not far Liverpool, the pair ran head first into oncoming traffic.

ANYONE following the ongoing saga of the Tromp family has been wondering what on earth is fuelling their behaviour.

So convinced were Mr and Mrs Tromp that their lives were in danger that they insisted all phones and tablets be left at home, prompting Mitch, who had secretly brought along his mobile,
to toss the phone out of the car window once his parents became aware of it.

It emerged earlier today that the Tromps may have been prepared to go as far as feeling the country — but changed their minds at the last minute given they could be traced via their passports.
“In their delusional state, the entire family was planning on going overseas with ... but they decided against it saying ‘passports can be tracked’,” a police source told the Telegraph.
“They thought the safer option would be going into a place where technology cannot reach them.”

Two of the three Tromp children lived with their family on the farm and all three worked there seven days a week. Ella even juggled work on the farm with her own business.
The family’s social media accounts are peppered with references to their close-knit and their work ethic.
Monbulk Police Sergeant Mark Knight, who is leading the search for Mark Tromp and knows the family personally, says the Tromps are not drug users or members of a church or cult.
He said the family is not in debt and there is no standover man lurking in the shadows.

Sergeant Knight said when he checked their home after the first reports of Riana being found near Goulburn, the house was open and keys were in car ignitions, but there was no sign of any struggle.
“This is just a massive meltdown, I’m sure of it,” he told the Canberra Times. “Something triggered them.”

When approached by News.com.au about the possibility the family was suffering from folie a deux — or a “shared psychotic disorder” as the syndrome is now more commonly known —
he said he was keen to learn more.
“This is something to talk to with the doctors at Goulburn where the mother and the daughter are being treated,” he said.

Search for missing Victorian man Mark Tromp enters its fifth day

    VIDEO at Link above

    Extract from Article:
Police are investigating a number of unconfirmed sightings in New South Wales and have so far discounted one in the rural town of Bega.
Forensic evidence has been taken from a room at the Millers Cottage Motel in Wangaratta, after its owners found a room door ajar about 9.30am on Friday.
The bathroom appeared to have been used, the bed may have been slept in and a muesli bar wrapper was found on the floor.
    But the hunt continues.
