Gunfire erupted at a gay nightclub in Orlando early Sunday, with multiple injuries reported, Florida authorities said.
"Everyone get out of Pulse and keep running," the club posted on its Facebook page about 2 a.m. ET.
Orlando police warned residents to stay away from the area, and urged people not to call their offices. They declined to provide the number of casualties, saying details will be available later.

"At least one officer was injured and taken to nearby Orlando Regional Medical Center," CBS affiliate WKMG reported. It was not immediately clear how many people were injured in the shooting.

The police department tweeted that it's a "fluid" scene and that updates would be forthcoming.

The department also said there was a "controlled explosion by law enforcement."

Pulse Orlando earlier posted a note to its own Facebook page that said "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running."

According to WKMG, the club describes itself as a gay bar.

Law enforcement sources tell CBS News the FBI is now responding, but that the Orlando PD is leading the investigation into the active shooting.

Mina Justice was outside the club trying to contact her 30-year-old son Eddie, who texted her when the shooting happened and asked her to call police. He told her he ran into a bathroom with other club patrons to hide. He then texted her: "He's coming."

"The next text said: 'He has us, and he's in here with us,'" she said. "That was the last conversation."

The incident follows the fatal shooting late Friday of 22-year-old singer Christina Grimmie, who was killed after her concert in Orlando by a 27-year-old Florida man who later killed himself. Grimmie was a YouTube sensation and former contestant on "The Voice."

Police have urged anyone who was at the nightclub Saturday night into Sunday morning to go to their headquarters.

Club patron Christopher Hansen told CNN he heard what could have been 20 or 30 shots, setting off a panic as people scrambled for cover or raced for the exits.

"It's just shocking," Hansen said."It was just one (gunshot)afater another."

As the tragedy was unfolding, Pulse Orlando posted to its Facebook page: "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running."

Rosie Feba, a witness, told the Orlando Sentinel she and her girlfriend were in the club near closing time when, "she told me someone was shooting. Everyone was getting on the floor. I told her I didn't think it was real, I thought it was just part of the music, until I saw fire coming out of his gun."

Feba told the Sentinel she her girlfriend ran out of the club and helped a man who had been shot get outside.

Richard Negroni said: “We just heard shots, it was less than a minute, it felt longer. There was a brief pause and we just ran. Everybody was just faces to the floor. I had someone over me, I really didn’t see [how many gunmen there were]. All I can tell you was the club was packed, there were over 100 people there, if the gunman came in through the front door people were injured or worse.”

Anthony Torres told Sky News he was outside the club when the shooting began and said he thought more than one person was involved in the attack. He believed the shooting lasted between 15 and 20 minutes.

Revelers described scenes of horror from inside the club. One witness told MSNBC that they had to crawl over bodies to escape.

A post to the club's Facebook page at around 2 a.m. warned "everyone get out of Pulse and keep running." Witness video from outside showed dozens of first responders at the scene, and several victims on the ground.

"It was tragic," club-goer Christopher Hansen told MSNBC. "I wasn't sure if it was the music, because ... it went with the beat almost until you heard just too many shots.

Terror attack at Orlando gay club Pulse leaves about 20 people dead, 42 others wounded; gunman dead following hours-long standoff with police

A terrorist opened fire inside a popular Orlando gay club early Sunday leaving "approximately" 20 people dead and 42 others wounded, according to authorities.

Authorities described the 2 a.m. attack as “well organized and well prepared” and said the shooter, who was not from the Orlando area, may have had “leanings” toward radical Islam.

Cops found the lone gunman and multiple victims dead inside the Pulse nightclub about four hours after the closing time bloodbath that sparked a tense standoff with police.

Police bombarded the club with a “controlled explosion” and killed the suspect while rescuing about 30 hostages holed up inside the club.

As bullets ripped in the initial attack, a fleeing employee saw “bodies everywhere.”

It appears they're going back and forth in the news about this possibly being radical islam terrorism or domestic terrorism.
LE does consider this terrorism no matter what.
During the news conference LE was asked if this has a connection to 'radical islam?' The answer was something like, 'it does appear they leaned toward that ideology.'

Per spokesman: This individual made 'threats' in the past he had ties to radical islam. It's NOT confirmed this is a fact.

Up to this moment, this spokesman said he hasn't heard that the gunman said anything about islam inside the nightclub. It doesn't mean he didn't, just that this spokesman hasn't heard that.

FBI took the lead in this investigation very early on. Many details released. Named as terrorism. Suspect identified quickly. They must have had a lot of information on the terrorist already.
