Missing woman’s burned vehicle found, man arrested for arson

A 19-year-old King George man was arrested Friday morning after a missing 19-year-old woman's burned out car was discovered in Westmoreland County.

Juan Benavidez II, 19, has been charged with felony arson of a vehicle.

"The incident remains under investigation and the Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office is working with the Virginia State Police to locate a 19-year-old Pamplin woman who has been reported missing," a Virginia State Police spokesperson said. "State Police issued a Critically Missing Adult Alert Thursday for Megan Lorraine Metzger."

The King George County Sheriff's Office issued a Be On the Lookout alert for Benavidez at 10:52 a.m. Thursday.

"The suspect vehicle, a white 2004 Mazda 4- door sedan, was located a short time later on Leedstown Road near Twilford. The vehicle had been set fire and was completely destroyed," a state police spokesperson said. "The burned vehicle is registered to a family member Metzger. The Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Virginia State Police, then began working to locate Miss Metzger."

Crime Insider sources told Jon Burkett that Benavidez told several people he killed someone, and he was going to dump body parts inside of a car, then set the car on fire.

Those sources said no body parts were located inside of the burned vehicle.

A tip from two farmers led law enforcement to a farm near Winter Harbor Road. Javier Medina said his brother-in-law watched Benavidez run, barefoot, bloodied and muddied, into the woods on his farm.

Anyone with information about Megan Meztger or Benavidez or recalls seeing a white, 2004 Mazda 4-door sedan in Spotsylvania, King George or Westmoreland counties is encouraged to call 911 or Westmoreland County Master Detective Jones at 804-493-8066 or Virginia State Police in reference to the the missing person case at 804-553-3445.

Suspect in Westmoreland arson case arrested, car is linked to missing woman

The Westmoreland County Sheriff's Office says it has arrested a King George County man in the burning of a vehicle belonging to the family of a missing Pamplin woman.

Juan Benavidez III, 19, was taken into custody early Friday and charged with arson. In a Facebook post Friday morning, the Sheriff's Office said the charge is related to the burning of a vehicle registered to a family member of Megan Lorraine Metzger, 19, of Pamplin, who was reported missing Thursday. Pamplin is a town that straddles Appomatox and Prince Edward counties about 100 miles southwest of Fredericksburg.

Metzger, who is an acquaintance of Benavidez, was last heard from on Tuesday. Police are working to determine where she was last seen because she has moved frequently in the last year, but Pamplin has been her most consistent place of residence.

Court records say 19-year-old Pamplin woman was shot and killed in Spotsylvania

Virginia State Police authorities now believe that Megan L. Metzger, a 19-year-old police reported as missing Thursday, was shot and killed at a Spotsylvania County residence a week ago, according to criminal complaints filed in the county Monday.

Metzger of Pamplin became the subject of a massive search after her 2004 Mazda was found burned late Thursday morning in Westmoreland County. Remains that police believe could be hers were recovered Saturday in two places in the Fairview Beach area of King George County.

The remains had not been positively identified as of late Monday afternoon.

Four people have been arrested in the case. David Weston Newton, 20, of Fredericksburg and Keelyn Rose Codynah, 23, and Robert Patrick Keating, 25, both of Spotsylvania, were arrested Saturday and charged with being an accessory after the fact of murder.

Juan Benavidez III, 19, of King George was arrested early Friday and charged with arson in connection with the torching of Metzger’s vehicle.

No one has been charged with murder.

According to the arrest warrant and criminal complaint for Codynah filed by state police agent J.M. Jeanty, Codynah is accused of assisting Keating after “knowing that such person had committed a homicide offense.” No reason for the reported shooting was stated.

The complaint states that Codynah admitted to being at Keating’s residence on Post Oak Road on July 17 when she saw Metzger’s shooting and death. Codynah stated that she and several others left the residence after the shooting and returned about two hours later, Jeanty wrote.

Codynah is quoted as saying that she helped others remove the victim’s body and stayed at the home to clean up blood. Codynah was later taken to a Travelodge motel on U.S. 1 in the Four Mile Fork area of Spotsylvania to retrieve an item owned by the victim. The complaint does not state what that item was.

A separate complaint accuses Keating of taking the firearm used in the shooting to Washington, where he disposed of it.

A police source said the investigation has shown that Metzger, Benavidez, Keating, Newton and perhaps others were partying together before Metzger was killed.

Police received information about a possible body being located in the Fairview Beach community. The human remains were found at various locations around the community. They were all gathered and sent to Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination, autopsy and positive identification.

Two plead guilty in Spotsylvania for roles in grisly slaying of Megan Metzger

Two of the four people charged in the grisly slaying and dismemberment of 19-year-old Megan Metzger were convicted of multiple charges Tuesday in Spotsylvania County Circuit Court.

Keelyn Rose Codynah, 24, of Spotsylvania and Juan Benavidez III, 19, of King George County entered pleas to charges that include being an accessory after the fact of first-degree murder, concealing a dead body and defiling a dead body. They were scheduled only for arraignments Tuesday, but both decided to plead guilty.

Codynah entered straight guilty pleas, while Benavides pleaded no contest. Both will be sentenced on May 9.

The other suspects charged in connection with Metzger’s death, 20-year-olds David Weston Newton of Fredericksburg and Robert P. Keating of Spotsylvania, were arraigned as scheduled Tuesday. Both pleaded not guilty and had trials set for different dates in April.

Newton is charged with murder. The slaying took place in Keating’s home on Post Oak Road and he is accused of directing much of the ensuing cover-up.

    Metzger murder trial postponed

Sentencing for three people charged in the 2018 murder coverup of 19-year-old Pamplin resident Megan Metzger has been delayed until Feb. 24, 2020.

According to reports, sentencing hearings for 26-year-old Robert Keating of Stafford, 20-year-old Juan Benavidez III of Warsaw, and 24-year-old Keelyn Codynah of Stafford, were rescheduled because the co-defendants may be used as prosecution witnesses in the Feb. 12-14 trial of the accused killer, 21-year-old David Weston Newton of Stafford.

Newton’s trial was reportedly moved from July after his former attorney, Alexander Raymond, was removed from the case due to a conflict of interest. Newton’s new defense attorney is Amy Harper.

The three co-defendants had pleaded guilty to various charges involving the case earlier this year.
