Investigators dig in Woburn backyard for teen missing since 1989

    Updated: Aug 13, 2015 - 5:23 PM

WOBURN, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- She has been missing for more than a quarter of a century. And Thursday, only FOX25 was there as investigators opened up a new search for 14-year-old Melanie Melanson of Woburn.

FOX25 has been covering this story for years. Our Bob Ward was the only reporter on the ground as investigators began digging at a new location, where investigators only recently gained access to. Ward learned that the property recently changed ownership and that's allowing a team of volunteers, including Mission for the Missing, and Forensic Archeology Recovery, to go on the property and start digging.

This is a methodical grid search, directed by the same forensic anthropologist who unearthed the Whitey Bulger death pits. And the search is located in a backyard that's long interested investigators.

A team of volunteers sifted through a Woburn backyard searching for Melanson. The teen vanished in October of 1989.

Her uncle, Frank Masciulli said, "They were at a party at night, and she never came home the next day."

With each shovel full of dirt, the investigators hope they are closer to bringing Melanson home.

Over the years, the woods where Melanson was last seen have been searched extensively. There have been other digs. But right now, investigators are focused on one backyard. It is an area they have long wanted to search.

Forensic Anthropologist Dr. Ann Marie Mires is directing the search and says if she is there, "We'll find her."

A cadaver dog, ground penetrating radar, and witness statements have all led investigators to the backyard. Woburn police closely watch, as Dr. Mires and her team methodically examine three areas here.

Shortly before Melanson disappeared dirt from Boston's big dig was spread over the backyard. And ground penetrating radar signals that bounced back, suggest something could be there.

Her family stood by, watching the dig. After a quarter century, they couldn't imagine being anywhere else and one family member says, "We will search forever until we find her."

Woburn police officers were also on site. If Melanson is found, the search site would immediately become a crime scene.

Melanie Melanson Missing: Soil Samples, Cadaver Dogs Help Revive Cold Case

    By David Lohr

A team of forensic anthropologists is preparing to dig for evidence in the case of Melanie Jo Melanson, a missing Massachusetts teenager who disappeared almost 23 years ago. Melanson went to a party with friends and never returned.

According to Michael Garrigan, a private investigator who has worked on the case since 1991, soil samples that were taken from a specific area of interest in the case have tested positive for elements of human decomposition.

“I received intelligence that led me to the location as being a possible place for her burial,” Garrigan told The Huffington Post. The private investigator did not disclose the location but said it is not far from Woburn, a city about 12 miles northwest of Boston.

“We recently set up a search with some cadaver dogs in the same area, and they also alerted,” said Garrigan. “We now have a dig set up for Aug. 17 and 18.”

Melanson, a freshman at Woburn High School, was just five days away from celebrating her 15th birthday when she attended an outdoor party on Oct. 27, 1989. The gathering, which was attended by about 20 people, took place in a wooded area along the Woburn-Stoneham line.

“People started to leave around 10:30 or 11:00 that night,” Garrigan said. “It got down to just three people — Melanie and two gentlemen — and they came out of the woods and she did not.”

The two men later told police they had left the party without Melanson. Local law enforcement conducted multiple searches of the area, but they were unable to locate any sign of the missing teen.

Jessica Pastore, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex County district attorney’s office, said authorities have not named the two men who were allegedly last seen with Melanson as suspects or persons of interest. She did, however, say that authorities do not think Melanson is alive.

“We presume that she is deceased,” said Pastore.

Garrigan told HuffPost that Dr. William Marvin Bass, a renowned forensic anthropologist at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, will lead the upcoming dig. He also said it will be conducted in collaboration with local law enforcement.

Neither of Melanson’s parents will be present for the dig.

“They both died somewhat young,” Garrigan said. “They were completely heartbroken, and [their daughter’s disappearance] probably contributed to their early demise.”

In a recent interview with Boston’s WHDH-TV, Melanson’s uncle, Frank Mascuilli, said the missing teen’s remaining family members are hoping for closure.

“We’re just hoping we can get some answers ... beyond being able to explain it,” Mascuilli said.

Garrigan, a father of four, said he has worked the case voluntarily almost from the start, contributing his time and money pro bono. He wants nothing more than to give Melanson a proper burial.

“I won’t stop,” Garrigan said. “It’s not about the dollar, it’s about the child, and right now we are closer than we’ve ever been.”

Melanie Melanson was 5 feet 3 inches tall and 105 pounds at the time of her disappearance. She had blonde hair, blue eyes and braces on her teeth. A $5,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to her remains. New tip prompts investigators to search state park for remains of girl missing since 1989

    By Cristina Corbin

    Fox News

An anonymous tip is prompting investigators to search a Massachusetts state park for a teenage girl who mysteriously disappeared 23 years ago when she entered nearby woods with a group of friends and never came out.

Melanie Melanson was five days shy of her 15th birthday when she vanished in October 1989, after attending a party with friends in a wooded area near the Woburn-Stoneham town line. Authorities believe the girl was killed, but her body has never been found and no suspects have ever been named in the case.

But an anonymous tip recently received from a man in New Hampshire might bring investigators closer to finding the teen and apprehending the person or persons involved in her disappearance, a source close to the case told FoxNews.com.

The anonymous caller directed authorities to search nearby Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham, where he said one of the teens last seen partying with Melanson was spotted later that night, according to the source. The caller identified himself as a former friend of one of those teens.

"Our contact tells us there's a possibility she was put into this park," the source said.

Michael Garrigan, a private investigator who has worked on the case since 1991, confirmed that a group of 9-13 dog teams will search a portion of the state park on Saturday. The Middlesex County district attorney's office told FoxNews.com that an officer with the Woburn Police Department will also be present during the search.

Melanie, then a freshman at Woburn High School, was the youngest attendee at the party on Oct. 27, 1989, in a wooded hangout popular to area teenagers. In the hours immediately following her disappearance, authorities suspected the girl may have run away, but later concluded that she was likely killed.

"We don't believe she ran away. We believe that she's deceased," said Jessica Pastore, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex County district attorney's office.

"We're hopeful that we can find Melanie and give her the proper burial that she deserves," said Pastore, adding, "We know who was with Melanie the night she disappeared."

The girl's family has said she was last seen with two teenage boys in the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 1989, according to local media reports.

Garrigan said he believes that if Melanson's remains are in Middlesex Fells Reservation, "my gut feeling is that she was not alive" when she was taken out of the woods.

The latest search for the girl comes after dogs detected a positive hit for human decomposition last year in an area close to where she was last seen.

"Everyone came out of that woods but her," said Garrigan, "And I’m confident something is in that ground or was in that ground."

"I’m not going to stop looking until I find this girl," he said. "I don’t think any family should go this long without closure."

A $5,000 reward is being offered for any information leading to Melanie Melanson's remains. Anyone with information on her disappearance is urged to contact the Woburn Police Department at 781-933-1212 x853 or State Police assigned to the Middlesex district attorney's office at 781-897-6650.

Jerry Leone believes there was foul play involved. “We have reason to believe that more than one person over the years has not only concealed Melanie’s body, but may also be involved in further concealing it or even moving it,” he said.Over the years, there have also been rumors that Melanie was seen that night walking in a parking lot, through the darkened neighborhood, and down a street toward the next town. The Melanson family has never given up, and neither have the police. Mike Pandolph has chased leads and returned to the scene of the crime many times over the years. After the reward was announced, finally, just a few weeks ago, the investigators returned to the woods acting, they said, based on the information they had just received. Gonzalez has heard about the possibility of new information. “They’re looking for her body, you know, watching it, watching it on the news, it gives me the goose bumps ’cause I’m like, they’re looking for my friend’s body,” Gonzalez said. Lawson said the family is hoping that the police do find a body. “For now we just want to bring her home,” she said. Everyone touched by Melanie’s disappearance says an end to their torment cannot come quickly enough. On November 1st 1989.

Vanished during a party in the woods - the story of Melanie Melanson
    [IMG]
On October 27, 1989, Melanie Melanson, a 14-year old freshman in high school, went to a party in Woburn, Massachusetts and was never seen again. There were rumors that she had run off to FL, but police are now investigating more sinister theories with regards to her disappearance.

    The Party

Melanie told her grandmother that she was staying at her friend’s house, her next-door neighbor, but did not mention that there was a party that night. Her friend had to stay back because of curfew, but Melanie still planned to stay over after she was done.

The party took place off in a wooded area on the outskirts of town that was a popular area for teens and underage drinking. Melanie was the youngest person of about a dozen at the party and as the night went on, the only girl. Five guys turned to two and it was just Melanie and best friends Gene Bertini and Jimmy Treska at 2AM. They all hung out together until Jimmy decided to head home. He offered Melanie a ride to her friend’s house, where she was supposed to spend the night, but she declines in order to hang out longer with Gene.

Gene and Melanie walk from a wooden area near the party towards main street together chatting. Gene has a motorcycle but only one helmet so he did not offer Melanie a ride home. Gene took off towards Woburn and said he saw Melanie start walking alone the other direction, opposite of her friend’s house. This is the last reported sighting of Melanie.

    Case Against Jimmy & Gene

Here is a mishmash of rumor, circumstantial evidence, gossip and character evidence against Jimmy & Gene. Take all of this with a grain of salt.

Gene and Jimmy both tell conflicting stories and say that the other person was the last to see Melanie.

The same week of Melanie’s disappearance, Jimmy’s car disappeared. Jimmy says it must have been stolen.

There are rumors of Jimmy being seen with a dirty shovel either near the location or at his house. Sources differ.

Both had girlfriends who had been at the party who refused to speak to investigators and still have not spoken to them to this day. Jimmy’s girlfriend was with him the morning after the disappearance. Most sources say that Gene was openly cheating on his girlfriend with Melanie.

Jimmy’s step-father is a retired Woburn Police Officer named Tony Rodriguez who retired not long after this incident, and he moved his family to Florida.

In 2011, 37-year-old Gene Bertini was arrested after allegedly pistol-whipping two teens during a gas station robbery in Wakefield. Police say Bertini stole $300 and a necklace from one of the teens.

After being arrested, Gene Bertini refused DNA testing. The case went to the Mass. Supreme Court

    Runaway

One of the hardest parts of this mystery is that investigators spent a significant portion of time believing that Melanie ran away to FL on her own volition and thus, missed a crucial time period in looking for her.

Melanie did not have any easy home life with parents who abused substances and had ran away in the past to her grandparents house in a town nearby. She was currently staying there the night of the party.

Police now believe Melanie was killed that evening. They also believe the body has likely been moved, maybe possible times, since her death

    Tips:

1992, an anonymous telephone caller told police to look for Melanson's body in an area pond. Investigators did search the pond, but found no evidence connected to her case.

2009: An anonymous tip to search in the Middlesex Fells in Stoneham "reopens" case

9/2009: Excavation of the land behind industrial park near the party location.

2010: Another search at the location of the party

2011: Search of the residence of one of the suspects and a property connected to the woods area. Another search of the party spot.

12/2011 Dogs give signs of human remains at McDonalds in Woburn following an anonymous tip.

2012: The anonymous caller directed authorities to search nearby Middlesex Fells Reservation in Stoneham, where he said one of the teens last seen partying with Melanson was spotted later that night, according to the source. The caller identified himself as a former friend of one of the teens at the party that night. Nothing of note was found.

7/2012: Dogs detect area of interest in Fells but nothing is found.

2015: Investigators searched the backyard of a house that had switched ownership recently. The previous owners had not allowed them to search it. Radar detection showed some clues, but after a thorough investigation with dogs, forensic anthropologists and others, nothing of note was discovered. Some sources say it was Jimmy's father's house during the time of the disappearance

Questions: Where is Melanie? What involvement did Jimmy & Eugene have in her disappearance? Who else at the party knows something?

This was the case that sparked my interest in missing persons and John/Jane Does. Always amazed how it will look like they have a big break and then nothing comes of it. Unfortunately, I highly doubt her body is still located where it was originally placed and feel she has been moved far away from that area, especially if any of the searches even came close to where she was. Sad case but glad that people are keeping her case alive.

I think you could quite possibly be right! Either that, or she was buried deep. Such a sad case of such a cute girl with her life ahead of her.

I'm not from the area, but I do spend a decent amount of time nearby. I have no idea how the area was in the late 80's, but that part of Montvale Avenue is very busy present day. Many restaurants, shops, gas stations, etc.
However the area where the party was supposedly held isn't like that at all. Still marshy and woodsy. But I believe it has been searched before. :(

Mars2019, I have been trying to pinpoint the exact wooded location on google maps; however, from what I can see there are several wooded locations near the Woburn and Stoneham line off of Montvale. Do you know the exact location of the party?

This is where rumors say the party was held. I don't believe Maps will go any closer that that unfortunately.
